The Los Angeles D-Fenders needed all 48 minutes to sneak past the Santa Cruz Warriors just seven days ago, but Saturday’s matchup with the California rival was a different story.
Playing in front of a sold-out Toyota Sports Center crowd, Los Angeles (3-1) used 100 points from the team’s five starters to throttle the Warriors, 134-109.
In a night defined by high-powered offense, it was Josh Magette that facilitated LA’s every move as he finished with 19 points and a NBA D-League season-high 17 assists. Vander Blue led the team in scoring with 28 points, six rebounds and four assists. Meanwhile, Travis Wear contributed a season-high 23 points. Justin Harper (19), Troy DeVries (11), Roscoe Smith (15) and David Nwaba (10) each finished in double figures on the night.

D-Fenders Hold On for Thrilling Double-Overtime Victory

Basketball doesn’t get much wilder than the show that the D-Fenders and Northern Arizona put on in El Segundo, as the Suns rallied from a 31-point deficit to force not just one overtime, but two. However, Los Angeles squashed that comeback bid in the second extra period by holding strong and keeping its scorching guests scoreless for a 142-135 victory.

If the Los Angeles D-Fenders winning their first two games after Los Angeles Lakers’ center Ivica Zubac’s second assignment to the team didn’t make it clear, the roster is adjusting to the rookie’s presence.
Zubac dropped 14 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists, and (perhaps most importanly) just one foul in 26 minutes of playing time during the D-Fenders’ Saturday night 132-120 road win over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
“I got to know my teammates better, our playing style, and it definitely feels better,” Zubac told Silver Screen and Roll last Wednesday after his first game back with the D-Fenders. “Each day is going to be better.”
Zubac has certainly been better about not fouling, decreasing how many times he was whistled in each of his games with the D-Fenders so far. As for fitting in to their offense, it’s been a work in progress, but the team says the adjustment process is going well.
Vipers Score 37 In Fourth Quarter To Hold Off D-Fenders

Hidalgo, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (5-2) defeated the Los Angeles D-Fenders (5-2) 116-115 on Sunday. The Rio Grande Valley Vipers scored 37 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Le’Bryan Nash and JP Tokoto led the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in points. Both players scored 18 on the night. Tokoto, who collected nine rebounds, was one rebound away from collecting a double-double. Darius Morris had his own double-double with 12 points and 10 assists.
Josh Magette started off strong for the Los Angeles D-Fenders. Magette had 8 points and helped the away team finish off the first quarter on top of the Vipers by the score of 30-28. Le’Bryan Nash and Jarvis Threatt scored seven points each on the second quarter that propelled the Vipers to 56-55 lead in the first half. D-Fenders coach Coby Karl more at ease working through the grind
Quote:
Karl still works in a field that yields sleepless nights. In his first season as the head coach of the Lakers’ Development League affiliate, Karl is working long hours to groom players for future NBA call-ups or overseas deals. The travel accommodations aren’t what he enjoyed as a player with the Lakers (2007-08), Cleveland Cavaliers (2009-10) and Golden State Warriors (2009-10), but that’s not what his new role is about. Karl would love for his job with the D-Fenders to help him land an NBA coaching position.
