Zubac put up some big numbers but still struggled with the speed of the game on defense. He will be a good one. Very valuable experience right now

D-Fenders WIN 118-110!

Nice comeback LA.D!

ZUBAC 22 POINTS 11 REBOUNDS (GREAT SECOND HALF).

MAGGETTE (18 PTS 13 DIMES) & BLUE (27 PTS) WERE AWESOME AS USUAL.

Maggette is an assist machine & is steadily moving up in the all-time D-League Assist record book.

Zu is still young and this experience will definitely help him even though the D-League game is different from the NBA. He will learn to adapt.

D-league games typically play at a faster pace than NBA games, and the style of play favors guards more than big men, which is why it's a little difficult to scout big men. Zubac did lead the team in +/- so his impact on the floor kind of supersedes the statistics he's putting up. Just my two cents.

He flat out has to improve his defense on the perimeter. It will always most likely be a weakness but it was pretty non existent tonight.

Was good to see him go up vs a big with NBA experience in Henry Sims

We found a gem guys. This guy will be a stud in 4-5 years. WOW. I see the moves, the footwork, the shooting, the form. It's all there. It's all mental here on out. With a couple years more training from an NBA level trainer, dietician, skills coach, this guy has Marc Gasol written all over him.

D-Fenders Defeat Stars

Quote:
EL SEGUNDO – Los Angeles made franchise history with a 118-110 victory over the Salt Lake City Stars at the Toyota Sports Center on Thursday. Now at 7-2 on the year, the D-Fenders are off to the best start in a season since the team’s inception 10 years ago.

Vander Blue notched his eighth 20-point game of the year with a team-high 27. Los Angeles Lakers assignment Ivica Zubac had a dominant showing, notching his second double-double of the year with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and point guard Josh Magette also contributed a double-double effort – his fourth of 2016 – with 18 points and 13 assists. Justin Harper (13) and Julian Jacobs (11) each finished in double figures.

D-Fenders fall to the Vipers, 140-125

Quote:
Three Los Angeles players scored more than 20 points and the D-Fenders totaled 125 points of offense, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a fiery Rio Grande Valley squad as the home team fell to the Vipers, 140-125, at the Toyota Sports Center on Saturday.

The difference-maker in the contest was Vipers guard Gary Payton II, who finished with a career-high 51 points and 11 rebounds on 20-of-29 shooting. Houston Rockets assignee Kyle Wiltjer added 27 points and former D-Fenders guard Darius Morris had 19 to ensure the victory for Rio Grande Valley.

Los Angeles (7-3) was guided by 24 points from Justin Harper, while Vander Blue (21 points, five rebounds) and Ivica Zubac (21 points, nine rebounds) also had 20+ scoring efforts. Troy Devries scored 13 points, Jeff Ayres contributed 12 and Josh Magette added his fifth double-double of the year (10 points, 10 rebounds) to round out LA’s double-digit scorers.

That's why they call it the d-league.

Scoring is a dime a dozen. Scouts have to look outside the stats to see how players fit in to the NBA.

What's the story with Vander Blue? I looked at the dleague page and seems to be 1st in line, according to the writer, for a callup.

Obviously he scores, but he must be missing D or something but I've not seen him at all.

Just curious..

He played for the Mavs summer league team, but did not receive a training camp invite from any team. From what I gather, he was playing 1 on 5 ball and teams figured it out pretty quickly. He needed to be more of a distributor. NBA intervention in the SPL is what makes SPL competition a few notches above d-league competition.

I've been rooting for him to make it to the NBA, but it seems like he's blacklisted or something right now. Scoring is vastly exaggerated in the d-league, as teams play a faster pace than the NBA. Blue doesn't particularly fill any niche role that some NBA team requires (defense, passing, hustle, three point shooting, stretch 4/5, etc). If he defended well for his position, that's an easy call-up for him, but he just doesn't do anything well outside of scoring. I noticed Justin Harper got a call-up before him last season, but that was because the Pistons needed a stretch four.

D-Fenders Can’t Corral Payton, Vipers

By Joey Ramirez | December 4, 2016

Quote:
Summary
The D-Fenders had no answer for Rio Grande Valley’s Gary Payton II, who erupted for 51 points on 20-of-29 shooting in his team’s 140-125 victory. With his Hall of Fame father sitting courtside, Payton splashed seven 3-pointers while making it a double-double with 11 rebounds.
