D-Fenders Eliminated In Game 3 Against Vipers

Quote:
With both teams’ season on the line, Rio Grande Valley simply came out with more energy than the D-Fenders.

The Vipers jumped out to a 19-point lead in the first half, which the D-Fenders nearly clawed out of. But the hole was too large, as they fell 140-127.

Josh Magette finished the night with 30 points, 14 assists and five 3-pointers, while Vander Blue put up 29 points despite fouling out.

Lakers assignee David Nwaba tallied a 26-point, 10-rebound double-double, as the D-Fenders’ season came to an abrupt close after cobbling together the second-best regular-season record in franchise history at 34-16.

When you think about it, the series was really in the d-fenders hands. They lost game 1 on a missed rebound. They got clobbered on the boards in game 3. D-fenders need to invest in size this off-season, and I hope Coby Karl doesn't go crazy with his 4 guard line-ups next season. Small ball only works when the unit is scoring while also defending/rebounding well enough on the other end. Guys like Magette, Blue, Ingram, Devries aren't exactly known for their defense. Wear also had his worst game w/ the defenders. Didn't make a single bucket.

Jeff Ayres may return once he finishes his stint overseas. He was, by far, our best rebounder and post player.
In fact he was one of the best in the league. When he left things began to fall apart leading up to last nights final defeat.

Good article about two-way contracts for next season.

https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2017/04/hoops-rumors-glossary-two-way-contracts.html

You have to wonder if the likes of Vander Blue, Magette and Harper will return to the D-Fenders next season as they've been for a couple of years now, will they move on overseas?

1) Magette almost made the Hawks roster last year, so I think he's good for a SL invite and then a TC invite from teams. He's obviously very skilled, but has the body of a teenager. Opponents just seem to overwhelm him physically. He's gotta find some way to bulk up. He's one player that should be allowed to bulk up though illegal means.

2) Harper briefly played for the Sixers this season, so NBA is still in the cards for him. Stretch 4/5s are always in demand. Plays a lot like Anthony Tolliver.

3) Blue, IMHO, needs to overhaul the way he plays, but I could be wrong. In fact, I want to be wrong about him. With questionable defensive ability, I have no idea what kind of role he'd carve out in the NBA. I don't know, man. I was rooting for him, but he still hasn't figured out the nuances of the team game offensively.

I'd rather re-evaluate Julian Jacobs, Travis Wear and Zach Auguste again. I'm high on Jacobs because he has shown the ability to hit the long ball and defend. Not as athletic as Nwaba but he's no slouch in that area either.

Auguste was decent at the last SPL.

Awesome. Same config as staples center court. Let's hope practices translate much better. I recall Russell saying the staples court was different in terms of the shot makeability factor.

Vander Blue Named D-League MVP!

Los Angeles D-Fenders guard Vander Blue has been named the 2016-17 NBA Development League Most Valuable Player in a vote by the league’s 22 head coaches, it was announced today.

Blue (6-4, 200) played in 47 games (46 starts) for the D-Fenders this season, averaging 24.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game while finishing as the league’s third-leading scorer. The former Marquette standout led Los Angeles to a Western Conference-best 34-16 record on the season before becoming the first player in team history to win the league’s top individual honor.

An NBA D-League All-Star in each of his three seasons with the D-Fenders, Blue scored in double figures in all but one of his contests this season, hitting the 20-point mark 39 times throughout the 2016-17 campaign. He was named the NBA D-League Player of the Week on December 26 and January 30.

Blue’s latest season adds to what has been a record-breaking career as he leads the D-Fenders in all-time points and rebounds. Blue’s 4,058 career point total ranks third in D-League history, and his 22.5 scoring average is good for the second-best career average in the league. He set league records in single-game free throws made (23) and attempted (27) this season, also finishing the year with a new league record in makes from the charity stripe (363).

Blue is also the first player in team history to win the league’s top individual honor. He was an NBA D-League All-Star for the last three seasons with the D-Fenders.

On top of that, Blue scored in double figures in 46 out of 47 games. He scored at least 20-points 39 times. He was also named the NBA D-League Player of the Week twice, once on December 26 and again on January 30.

Interesting if the Lakers go for any players from the D-Fenders for the 16 and 17 roster spots next season for the two way contracts.

Pity we didn't really utilize Gerald Green when he was MVP in the D-Fenders, now he's in the spotlight again with the (bleep) Saltics.

US men's basketball will start road to gold with D-Leaguers

Quote:
The U.S. men's basketball team will let minor leaguers take the first steps on the road to gold.

The Americans announced a six-member selection committee Tuesday that will choose players, mostly from the NBA Development League, to play in games to qualify for the 2019 Basketball World Cup.

Coach Gregg Popovich and a team of NBA stars would return for that tournament and the following summer for the Olympics, assuming the U.S. makes it to Tokyo. But a team of lesser-known players will have to get the Americans most of the way there.

"This will be an excellent opportunity for NBA D-League players to showcase their talent and experience meaningful and important international competition while representing the United States," USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley said in a statement.

Why USA Basketball will use non-NBA players for FIBA World Cup qualifying

Team USA may choose to build a team consisting of mostly D-League players for upcoming qualifiers

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/why-usa-basketball-will-use-non-nba-players-for-fiba-world-cup-qualifying/

USA Basketball to use D-Leaguers for FIBA World Cup qualifying
Quote:
USA Basketball will use mostly D-League players for 2019 China World Cup qualification games, the basketball organization announced in a new release on Tuesday.

FIBA’s new World Cup qualification system, which mirrors FIFA’s qualification path, includes games during the NBA’s regular season, preventing NBA players from participating in those games.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2017/05/02/usa-basketball-nba-d-league-fiba-world-cup/101198056/

Team USA basketball will temporarily be made up of D-Leaguers

USA Basketball will soon eschew NBA stars in favor of D-Leaguers, and on the surface, the news is a bit eye-opening.

Quote:
Ever since the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) changed its rules to allow professional players to compete in competitions such as the Olympics and FIBA World Cup (formerly known as the FIBA World Championship), Team USA’s rosters have been littered with the best players in the world. So why make the switch to D-Leaguers, as ESPN’s Marc Stein reports the U.S. will?

South Bay Lakers GM Nick Mazzella on Two-Way Contracts, SB Lakers, G League and More

Quote:
The rapid growth of the NBA Gatorade League has led to an array of modifications to the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement, and one in particular promises to change the way NBA roster are assembled.

Under the new CBA, starting next season teams will have an additional two hybrid spots, reserved for players with less than three years of NBA experience. These “two-way” contracts can be signed for one or two years.

South Bay Lakers General Manager Nick Mazzella explained some of its complexities, and how it affords both NBA and G League teams additional tools to assemble competitive rosters.
