Quote: | Report: J.R. Smith accused of choking high schooler who mocked Smith’s trade from Knicks
The Knicks traded J.R. Smith to the Cavaliers in January. He returned to New York last week to criticize Phil Jackson and play the Knicks.
Early in the morning before the 7:30 p.m. game, he reportedly got into a confrontation.
Shayna Jacobs and Rocco Parascandola of the New York Daily News:
Smith has been accused of choking a 19-year-old high school student in Chelsea after the younger man quipped about the hoopster’s trade to Cleveland.
Smith, 30, has not been arrested in connection to the alleged incident outside Artichoke Basille’s Pizza about 4 a.m. on Nov. 13 at W. 17th St. and Tenth Ave.
The teen, Justin Brown, who wears braces and hails from Harlem, was with pals who chided Smith for ignoring their fan request for a photo.
Smith is seen on a cell phone video walking away from the group, sources said.
“That’s why New York kicked you out, yo!” Brown remarked.
Brown told cops that after the verbal brush, Smith, who is 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, checked him against the exterior of the building and put his hands around Brown’s neck, police sources said.
Alex Spiro, a lawyer for Smith, said the claims against the athlete are unfounded.
It seems there are witnesses who could corroborate either story. If that cell phone video continues, it could be particularly telling. |

19 years old and still in high school? Is that a typo? What's the point mentioning he has braces?
JR Smith is one of the biggest buttheads in the NBA but that doesn't mean you can say whatever you want to say to him in public. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant |

And someone saying something to you is not a justification for physical force. |

J.R. Smith won’t be charged after accusation of fighting high schooler
A 19-year-old high school student accused J.R. Smith of choking him in New York in November, a response to heckling about the guard’s trade from the Knicks to the Cavaliers.
Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com:
“The New York Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office say they have closed the investigation.
“After a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding this case, we have concluded that the evidence does not support criminal charges against Mr. Smith,” Patrick Munice, a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, said in a statement to cleveland.com.”
Now, Smith can focus on other issues – like keeping his cool on the court. |

Not surprised. Folks made opinions based on their feelings about JR, but if you read the full story of what allegedly happened it made NO SENSE whatsoever. Glad JR is rid of this foolishness. |

Quote: | J.R. Smith sued for $2.5 million for incident outside New York night club
J.R. Smith doesn’t play with the Knicks anymore, but an alleged incident in New York could still cost him.
Smith is being sued for an alleged confrontation outside a pizza place in Chelsea last November, according to a report from Brian Windhorst of ESPN.
Justin Brown, who was 19 at the time, approached Smith at a pizza shop at about 4 a.m. after Smith had left 1Oak, a well-known club in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. In a lawsuit filed Thursday, Brown claims Smith turned down a request for a photo and then choked and struck him in his head and neck area. Brown is suing for physical injuries and emotional distress.
Smith was asked about the lawsuit following the Cavaliers’ 107-93 win over the New York Knicks on Saturday night.
“No, I ain’t got no comment on that,” Smith said. “It is what it is. So, we’ll just see what happens.”
There is a video of the incident from a security camera, according to the report. Smith was not arrested and, while the New York District Attorney looked into the matter, no charges were filed against Smith.
Smith’s attorney threatened a countersuit, according to the report. |
