Battier was on Zach Lowe's "Lowe Post" podcast today and the subject of the Lakers came up. Lowe has been on record the last two years with his bafflement at the Lakers' philosophy and how in the world Byron Scott is coaching in a modern NBA. Today he asked Battier if the team is actually hoodwinking the league with its "seemingly backwards-thinking" style of play and actually employing a brilliant "forward-thinking" tanking strategy.

Battier said this:

Quote:
"The Lakers will be a championship level team within three years. They will be competing for an NBA championship. And we'll look back on this year and say that was really grotesque to watch, fascinating almost. But ...LA's ability to reload is unlike any team in the league. And then you throw in a top-three pick, all of a sudden they get this kid Ben Simmons who's a player..then they get free agents. [Here, Lowe protests none of have come so far] They're just going to... trust me, they're going to. It just takes a certain recruiting pitch that will go down and they'll reload faster than--before your eyes--you'll be shocked. But mark my words, within three years, they will be a championship contender.

He then went on to marvel at our league-leading rate of contested three-point jumpers. "74%...do you know how hard that is to do?"

Other topics: Kobe's abysmal shooting percentage. Battier says it pains him to even talk about this because Kobe was the "greatest competitor" he ever faced and he saw him in "prime mamba." He then added that Kobe's play right now doesn't make him the "most detrimental" player in the league, because there's guys out there with poor attitudes that make them more detrimental to a locker room ....but with his play, Kobe's still in the bottom 5. Ouch.

Then they debated how good the Lakers team actually thought they'd be. Whether they were a legit 30-40 game winner or if they were merely posing as one while stealth tanking.

Battier knows something. He knows we are awful and young. Our core players are all under 24. The vets are just rentals. He also knows Byron is merely a band aid to let Kobe ride off in the sunset. It's crazy that we are 13 games into the season and people are predicting we get the best athlete outta college in the last 5 years.

I fixed my poor paraphrasing up there. Lowe said that play/volume-wise, Kobe is probably the worst rotation player in the NBA right now. Battier countered that Kobe's play is poor, but there's guys out there with poor attitudes with much a more deleterious effect. But having said that, Kobe's play probably has him in the bottom 5, and it pained him to say that.

He's right. I can see that. The beauty about what Buss was able to do during the 90's when we had a down period was keep us competitive while remaining flexibility. This rebuild is a little different in the sense where we're very poorly coached, have a horrible record so far, and have fans that are already tuning out the season.

I wasn't expecting PO's, but a 32-34 win team that competed and was fun too watch. I haven't gotten that this season at all.

Hardworking, great in the locker room, people listen to him, and big time into analytics as a player...he'd be a great addition to have.

If only he had the code to crack that mind-numbing armor that is Byron's arm folds.

You don't even need analytics to realize what we're doing is stupid and ineffective...
