I love it. Byron is so bad, people are thinking maybe he's some kind of secret genius, tanking while not looking like he's tanking.

No... Byron thinks he's putting the team into a situation where they can win! There's no plan to tank, Byron is really trying to win!

However... I wouldn't put it past Mitch a couple of years ago to think, hey, we need some high draft picks but we don't want to tank intentionally. We've interviewed Byron 3 times now and he still can't tell me exactly HOW he plans to win. He keeps saying, "foxhole" and "man up"... this guy is PERFECT!

Byron would not be the secret genius in this equation, it would be the front office hiring Mr. Magoo to backwards-ass them into another foundation piece.

I think Battier sees the rough "plan" the Lakers have ahead. They have the potential to get a Top 3 pick. They are setting up cap space right when the salary crap explodes. It may be possible to land 3 MAX FAs along with the crop of lottery picks currently on the team.

Same here.

Finally someone in the media isn't bashing the hell out of our Lakers.

I don't know if others are joking are not, but I've truly always liked Battier. I like all the Duke guys. If he's not against it, I'm surprised he hasn't got a job on a staff somewhere, at Duke or in the NBA.

Great interview never liked Shane Battier as a player but his Basketball IQ and understanding of analytics is through the roof

This.

It's not hard to see the plan, but the short-sighted can't. The need for instant gratification overtakes most pundits and many fans.

In the 90's The Lakers made the finals once which was in 91 versus the Bulls. We had a decent team throughout those years with West running the show but we were underachieving in the mid to late 90's when we acquired Shaq. No rings until 2000. The last one being in 88. That's a 11 year drought. I can wait. We can only trend upwards going forward.

Despite the lack of titles, those where somewhat fun times. Some very enjoyable teams to watch.

It hasn't been pretty, but I am enjoying watching the young cats ball.

Interesting that Battier said it would take a certain recruitment pitch to land a FA. I guess we know the Jeannie "look at the shiny toys we can give you" pitch probably isn't it.

He's right. I can see that. The beauty about what Buss was able to do during the 90's when we had a down period was keep us competitive while remaining flexibility. This rebuild is a little different in the sense where we're very poorly coached, have a horrible record so far, and have fans that are already tuning out the season.

I wasn't expecting PO's, but a 32-34 win team that competed and was fun too watch. I haven't gotten that this season at all.

I agree with you. During that period, we competed with moves like getting Nick Van Excel, Eddie Jones and Ceballos.

They were entertaining. But one year lighting struck twice. We got Shaq and Kobe in one summer.

We need something like that to happen.

I wouldn't even make him serve time as an assistant. I'd give Battier the head coaching job right away if he wanted it.

During that drought, we went to playoffs.

I hope Battier is right but there is simply no guarantees in this crazy sport.

Like enjoying watching young players learn and grow toward achieving success. That is why I still coach youth football despite my son being a senior in high school.

.. I knew we would be bad, people were delusional thinking we had a chance at the playoffs, I'm enjoying the season because us losing means we are winning and our chances at keeping our pick increases. I think Simmons is a generation talent just like I thought KAT was last draft, so having a chance to draft him gives me comfort with the losing.

There was also no CBA back then, that is the major obstacle toward a quick rebuild today.
