He hated PJ and vice versa. Never wanted to hire him. Once Dr. Buss decided to go over West's head and hire PJ, it was a matter of time.

Thanks for the info

Some Clipper fan asked me at work today why we let Jerry West go. Now this game reminds me that question.

West had some health issues back then, he couldn't even watch the games.

At least we got Ryan West, he's going to be our GM when Mitch call it quits.

he seems quite happy with the warriors.
he is also quite old now.
i don't think leaning on him is the way for the future.

If you read Jerry West's book there's a chapter about all the anguish West was going through with his health and the strains in the organization. His wife wrote a desperate letter to Dr. Buss, pleading for him to reach out to Jerry and just assure him of their relationship. Buss blew it off.

For all the post-mortem adulation of Dr. Buss, he did have some strange quirks -- most notably his hard-on to return to the days of Showtime, which made him unhappy with Phil's 5 championships because they lacked the excitement of the Riley / Magic days. It's why he let Phil go the first time, reluctantly hired him the second time and went for D'Antoni over Phil the third time -- thinking that D'Antoni could give them Showtime again. Jimmy Buss referenced Showtime in the hiring of Byron Scott.

Jerry West had his demons and internal battles, but if Buss hadn't been so aloof, they would still have his brilliant basketball mind in the Laker family. Instead, Golden State is getting the benefit of his basketball acumen and they've put together a true team.

This was a big reason. I remember reading he couldn't even watch the game 6 clincher versus Indy. He was so anxious/nervous, he hopped in his car and drove to Santa Barbara (or somewhere north) listening to updates on the radio.

Also, yes he hated Phil and he really hated that Jeannie started to date him as he could see that presenting problems down the road. Boy was he right about that one.
