Beat Like a Punching Bag… Two teams heading in entirely opposite directions. The Lakers showing losing is easy. The Warriors showing winning is easy, opening the season with a record 16 straight wins.

Certainly, on any given day one NBA team can beat another, but the only victory the Lakers might have pulled off in this one was a moral victory. And they didn’t even get that, falling 111-77.

The defending champs moved the ball with precision to an endless supply of shooters. Defensively, they’re on top of their game.

The Lakers struggled with their usual issues. Too young, too old, too poorly coached.

Entertaining tonight was maybe Nance, Russell and Randle for stretches. Frankly, you watch the team to see how their young players grow and how the pieces fit. And, you wish Kobe would have a vintage game every now and then. Tonight, was a very sad outing for him, a career low in points with a minimum of 5 FGAs.

Kobe -- -- He opened the first half with a 1-9 shooting performance and his usual 1-5 shooting from three He’s a consistent 20 percent from behind the arc. We didn’t remedy that in the second half. The ball ended up in his hands quite a bit with the shotclock winding down usually the result of poorly designed and executed offensive sequences. These weren’t easy shots. These were tough shots that he just doesn’t make any more with consistency. The offense is really doing him no favors that’s for sure. The result was just one of those nights that makes you realize this will be the last season. He looked pretty frustrated out there. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-14 shooting (1-7 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 turnovers in 25 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He missed a 17-footer with a man on in a weak first possession. He worked the post, pumped, drew contact and FTs, he made one FT for the Lakers first score. He missed a wing pull-up with the shotclock low. He missed a turnaround out of a timeout. He airballed a corner three trying to beat the shotclock. He airballed a sideline three on a kickout and heard it from the crowd. Irked, he pushed it up court next time down and swished the pull-up three. He missed his third three next time down, forced on the wing. He lost the ball trying to make a move on the sideline, turnover. He switched on a big defensively, used the veteranism to reach around and strip him and setup a Laker breakaway score. He missed a layup in transition, but Bass tipped it in. He had 4 points on 1-9 shooting (1-5 from three). Second Half: He airballed a three on iso after the play busted. He setup Randle for FTs on the two-man sequence (more please). His pull-up against the shotclock got wedged into the rim for a jumpball. He missed another long wing jumper. He missed a forced wing jumper up against the shotclock. His pass was picked off for an uncontested dunk the other way. He missed a fade across the lane.

Clarkson -- -- Awful first half, shooting 0-5 and with a -16. He had a stretch where he was orchestrating the offense in the half and it just fell apart badly. Not sure what we were doing. He struggled to get it going, one of those rare games this season where you couldn’t depend on him for a decent scoring night. Nothing came easy. He seemed either lost in the offense and invisible or really trying to impose himself against the D. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-11 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a -25. The Action: He got tapped on a corner jumper. He was called for a travel on a drive from the corner. He missed a baseline jumper, tried following his shot, layup the other way. He tried to iso and was blocked badly. He missed a wing three. He attacked and missed a big scoop on a layup attempt. Second Half: He missed a three, tracked it down and missed another wide open three to start the half. He worked his way from the left side of the court off the Randle screen to a layup around the D on the right side. He missed a floater trying to attack from the corner out of the triangle, usually we make that post entry pass and work off that. He was blocked on a drive out of a timeout. He tipped in a Randle miss, crashing the glass.

Randle -- -- He was making some seriously tough shots over good D on iso plays in the first half. Those short turnarounds in the 10- to 12-foot range seemed to be his game tonight. I really wish they’d run more screen-roll with him on the wings. Defensively, he had some moments both good and bad. He’d miss an occasional rotation, but he’d also show some good recovery off the two-man D or in transition. Once the knowledge catches up to the athleticism, it will be interesting to see how far he can go with his D. There are some good tools there to be really effective. Just watch some video of Draymond. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-6 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 steal, 1 block and no fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He was blocked while forcing a shot on iso. He posted up and hit the turnaround in the middle of the lane. He blocked a big in the paint and drew a foul pushing it out, he made both FTs. He iso’d and hit a tough turnaround in the post. Nice hustle back in transition to swipe a lob pass and change ends the other way. He swished another tough 12-foot pull-up on iso. He had 8 points on 3-4 shooting and 4 boards. Second Half: He missed a baseline turnaround. He drew FTs off the pocket pass from Kobe on the two-man sequence, he made both. He missed a tough turnaround in the paint.

Russell -- -- He didn’t seem to be intimidated by the crowd and talent on the other side. The Lakers were struggling to score early on, but Russell was one of the few to show up then. Despite the Lakers trailing big in the first half, he was just a -1. One of the few things working out there. In the second half, the Lakers just got smoked. Some good efforts by Russell defensively on Curry when they matched but he’s the MVP for a reason. Some good moments against Klay defensively. Good experience for Russell. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He missed a wing three. He sank a pull-up elbow jumper in transition. He shed Klay, attacked right and hit the pull-up on the baseline. Good D on the other end to get the miss on Klay. He was called for a carry on a change of pace in transition. He missed a baseline jumper on an inbounds. He swished a floater working off the triangle cut off the post to take the pass. He airballed a forced pull-up on the wing after nearly getting picked. Quick kick ahead to Lou who was fouled on the breakaway layup. He pushed it out and swished the pull-up off one foot in the lane. He had 8 points on 4-7 shooting and 3 boards. Second Half: Nice bounce to Kobe in transition (who wasn’t ready for it), but Kobe set up Hibbert for FTs. He deflected a pass to get a stop. Another pass deflection next time down. He didn’t crack back to prevent an uncontested offensive putback by a big. He missed a pull-up three in early offense. He attacked and fired a hard kickout to Nick for the three. He missed a three from the top of the arc. Good read on D to break up lob, he then lobbed to Nance on the other end for a score.

Hibbert -- -- The Warriors did a good job of drawing Roy and hitting his man as the Lakers were poor at helping the helper. So many lobs or easy scores as the team D fell apart. Not much offensively from Hibbert. We were hot garbage. One wonders what kind of contract Roy will end up with after this season. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He bricked an awkward, not fully faced-up shot out of the post. He missed a short hook in the paint. He fed Russell from the post for the floater. He swatted a shot and it led to Laker FTs the other way. Second Half: He grabbed an offensive board and was tied up. He drew FTs off the Russell-to-Kobe-to-Roy sequence in transition, he made both. He was called for a moving screen.

Williams -- -- One of three Lakers to get to 10 points in the game. He led the Lakers in the first half with 10 points on 4-5 shooting. He worked that sideline PnR into some jumpers and also got out in transition when we had some opportunities. That was pretty much it for him. Nothing in the second half. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-5 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -28.The Action: He was stripped on the sideline. He drew FTs on a hesitation move, he made one. He scored breakaway layup off the Kobe steal. Out quick again and Russell hit him for FTs, he made one. He swished a baseline pull-up. He sank another baseline pull-up working off the screen. He sank a wing jumper off the wing screen. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Young -- -- This team looked like Nick’s game last year. Nick did a little bit himself, as well. Rough night. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He swished a top-of-the-key jumper coming off a screen. He missed a wing three. He missed a three on iso and wanted the foul. He missed a three out of a timeout. He missed a wing jumper off a screen. Second Half: Good hands to catch a hot kickout from Russell and he hit the three. He missed the chuck from three on iso. He kicked out to Nance for the open baseline jumper. He missed a wing three. He scored a layup when Huertas found him down low. He missed a turnaround chuck on iso.

Nance -- -- Back in the lineup as the PF while Metta sat and we didn’t go to the super small ball. He played a measured game, took what came to him. His jumper was off early in the game, but came around later. Some good moments passing to Black for scores. Wish we could see more of that with our other bigs finding each other. I would have liked to see more impact defensively. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He had a board tapped to him and dunked. He missed a baseline jumper, way short. He missed an elbow pull-up. He was fouled trying to finish strong at the rim, he made both FTs. Second Half: He finished the lob from Russell on the break. Nice interior feed to Black for the slam. He swished a wing jumper. He rattled down the open baseline jumper off the kickout from Nick. He bounced to Black under the hoop for a dunk. He missed a tough fade in the lane up against the shotclock.

World Peace -- -- He didn’t score in some garbage time run. He did move the ball well and somehow led the team in assists with 3 in his short run. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 9 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He found Nance open for the wing jumper. He picked his man with a nice reach. Good job on the offensive glass, not sure how he didn’t make the putback though. He was picked on a drive.

Bass -- -- We went with the Bass small ball, which brings nothing to the table like the Warriors small ball and ability to stretch the floor. Scott seems to not get it when it comes to small ball. He is either getting outplayed by taking out his anchor in Roy to try to match up like the last game (vs. making the opponent match up to us as Roy crashes the offensive glass and tries to get putbacks and second changes). Or we try to hold serve with poor rebounding and no ability to push tempo or spread the floor with small ball. We play to no advantage. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 5 boards and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He got lost and gave up a layup. He missed a face-up baseline jumper on iso. He kept an airball alive to Nance who dunked it. Nice hustle in transition to clean up a missed Kobe layup. Second Half: He swished a baseline jumper off the behind-the-back pass from Kobe. Kind bounce on the wing jumper off the two-man game. He missed a 17-footer off the two-man game.

Black -- -- Garbage time minutes so Tarik got to start the fourth quarter. He did a good job in his short time out there, scored, got boards and gave the offense a little bit of spark just with his screens and movement. Wish we could see more of him. The Stats: HE scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting to go with 6 boards and 3 fouls in 12 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He bricked a 15-footer off the two-man game. He dunked off the interior feed from Nance. He missed a short jumphook off the dump off from Lou. He dunked off the bounce pass from Nance. He up-faked on the face up, attacked and reversed. He missed a jumper.

Huertas -- -- He got to run with Tarik in garbage time to start the fourth quarter. Again, it was hit and miss with him. He scratched some points, hitting jumpers, but also had 3 turnovers. Thankfully, no super embarrassing moments on D. The fake behind his back pass to get rejected on a layup was kind of cringe worthy. The Stats: The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He hit a runner in the paint off the screen by Black (gave it right back up on the other end). He was picked for a layup the other way. He tried to ball fake behind his back and then was swatted. He swished a three straight away. He missed a three out of a timeout. He lost the dribble pushing it out in transition. He hit Nick under the hoop for a layup when the D froze. He attacked and was swatted. He swished a baseline floater.

Kelly -- -- Scott dusted off Kelly for 6 minutes of garbage time. He hit a perimeter jumper trying to draw a foul and got smashed on the break for FTs. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 6 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He hit Huertas for the three. He sank the leaning jumper from the wing. He was hammered on the break for FTs. He attacked and threw the ball to the Warriors, layup the other way.

Scott -- -- The Lakers trailed 16-7 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Warriors bombing threes… He brought in Bass and Lou for Russell and Hibbert… Young in for Kobe, down 11 with 4 minutes left… Nance in for Randle… Offense just an awful series of isolations offensively. Embarrassing, really… Warriors with a 22-4 run to destroy the Lakers quickly… The Lakers trailed 30-11 after the first… He started the Hibbert, Nance, Kobe, Lou, Russell unit to open the second quarter… Warriors execution out of timeouts usually leading to dunks or layups… Down 20, he sat Kobe and Nance for Young and Randle… Clarkson in for Russell… Williams hot for the Lakers… He brought in Russell and Kobe for Lou and Young. Probably should have left Kobe on the bench for Lou who was hot… Bass in for Hibbert… Warriors executing flawlessly out of another timeout for a three. Lakers play busts badly and they are forced with a long chuck to try to beat the shotclock… Small victories, the Lakers won the second quarter 27-24, good turnaround after the horrible start… The Lakers trailed 54-38 at the half. The Warriors were 8-22 from three, the Lakers 1-10. The Lakers won the break 14-5… The ball ended up in Kobe’s hands with the shotclock winding down too much this game. A lot of this was just badly designed offense where we need bail out shots… The Lakers cut it to 14, but trailed by 25 shortly later… Bass, Nance, Young, Lou and Russell this time… The Lakers were outscored 35-17 in the third, putting this one away for good… He went with a Black, Nance, Young, Lou and Huertas to start the fourth… Metta in for Lou… Nance out for Kelly… Hurry it up and get out of here…

Thanks, DB.

There can hardly be any better conclusion than this:
Quote:
Too young, too old, too poorly coached.

Lakers have no team D at all.
Any coach with so miserable results (not just the overall record, but also the way the team looks on the floor, and especially complete failure to play defense) should be fired without hesitation.

I've been waiting to see these two together on court since the beginning of the year. In hope of a strong defensive outing.

I keep waiting. I'm a patient man....

This team just sucks... it's brutal. =\

I remember in the 90s when we weren't that good. We weren't THIS terrible. But then again, maybe it was the kid in me that always had hope. Right now this is pathetic and I don't see how it's even considered an NBA team. If these players are getting millions playing like crap, then put me in.

The Lakers were early turkey. Difficult to watch Kobe clanking so badly, and the team looking so lost on both ends.

I'm thankful for DB for making the recap more engaging than the game.

Heartbreaking loss - LMAO

Glad (in a weird sort of way) to hear of the "great" performances the Lakers are doing while I am traveling outside of the United States.

At least we are not as bad as the 0-15 76ers team that has prided itself in getting as many talented rookies and just letting them play

Interesting that there are reports of grumbling on the number of shots that Kobe is taking, yet the ball seems to wind up in The Black Mamba's hand with a very short shot clock.

With Williams and Swaggy again not providing consistent offensive production, one wonders what is the purpose of playing them outside of showcasing them for a possible move at the fast-approaching trade deadline.
Note: With the veterans unable to provide an example of consistency, maybe Mitch is presently reviewing other teams that need firepower coming off the bench (along with Bass for his reputation on defense) in the system they are using - considering their past history. This might be a win-win scenario since veterans would embrace being on a winning team while the Lakers get the opportunity to obtain strategic players

Randle, Clarkson, Nance and DLO (even with his improving game) have provided additional evidence that they have many more lessons to learn.

Warriors game show what players are able to play their best when the best is required (thanks, to John Wooden)

The season has shown some surprises that include the following:
* Lakers not doing better than their current record and looking bad
* Clippers have not out rebounded any team they have faced - they've been even a number of times despite having DeAndre Jordan
* Mavs have a 9-6 record
* Rockets are 5-9 proving that getting rid of D12 was a good move
* JLin;s Charlotte team is 8-6
* The "In Vogue" team of the Milwaukee Bucks (Sir Charles loves them) are 6-8
* DFish's Knicks are 8-7

We should give DB a full supply of aspirin for completing the extensive and accurate breakdowns after most games

"Frustration kind of got to me," Bryant said. "The fact that -- the way I played, the way I shot, blowing coverages defensively, coming down offensively and not having concept of what we're trying to do. It just kind of got to me a little bit and frustrated me, and it affected my shot."

Wow!

If there was ever a game to highlight the divide between what is where the Lakers should be and how bad the Lakers are, it was this game.

Buckle up everyone, this is gonna get worse before it gets better, and I thought we hit rock bottom already.

Bye.

Any true Laker fan was embarrassed. My glaring stat- Black 6 rebs in 12 minutes, Hibbert 6 while playing all night. Lost in Kobe's struggles, Clarkson was equally as awful. Russell showed a little something in this one. Randle rebounds above average, but his overall effort is just not there. He has slowed down a bit in his offensive approach and is letting it come to him a little better. An energy guy like Nance should get more playing time, and a good coach would play him. Kobe, really, should retire. No reason to put himself through this, and despite what he has said, he's not teaching the young guys much, although more than Scott. Jim Buss either needs to step down or the Buss family needs to sell the team. Its gonna take wholesale changes to fix this mess!

If this doesn't convince the front office to can Scott, what will?

I think we should also seriously consider trading what vets we can for assets. It's not like anyone of them are going to attract free agents. Give the keys to the kids.

Also, Kobe, I love you. Don't do this to your legacy. Bow out gracefully now while you're still relatively in one piece.
