The Old Gunslinger… It would come down to which power was stronger: The Sixers ability to choke away a lead in the fourth quarter or Byron Scott’s inability to coach this team.

Before the game, the Sixers gave Kobe an emotional tribute with a great intro and a special ceremony. This is why you make the retirement official. It gave some meaning to a game between two of the worst teams in the NBA. Crazy how much buzz a game between an 0-18 and 2-14 team could have.

Perhaps, pumped up by that tribute, Kobe sank three three-pointers on his first three trips down the court. The crowd was amped up off the vintage Kobe, who was showing crossovers to make defenders look silly and hitting those early shots. Kobe indulged the fans to a fault, hoisting 11 threes in the half and finishing 4-17 from the three line. The old gunslinger was emptying his clip tonight.

“You’re going to live and die with it. You just hope you don’t die too much,” Scott said. The Lakers died tonight, unfortunately. They helped the Warriors get the best start to an NBA season with a loss and now helped the Sixers to avoid the worst start with another loss.

In the end, it wasn’t the Sixers ability to choke away the fourth quarter lead. It was the Lakers inability to play as a team.

The Sixers snapped their losing streak as the Lakers fell 103-91, but the game ended with a thunderous, “Kobe…Kobe…Kobe…” by those who came out to see his last visit to Philly. Kobe waved his last goodbye to the city.

“They got me,” Kobe said, feeling emotional about this one.

Kobe -- -- Loved the tribute before the game. Glad Kobe gets to go out with everyone able to show a little love. As for the game, yikes. Great start with the hot hand to get the crowd going, but it cooled off all too quickly. “That was some beautiful basketball,” Kobe joked afterward. He said he has to figure out how to solve getting stiff as the game goes on. So many threes, 4-17 is a ridiculous number. Shooting his way out of it certainly isn’t helping. If we’re giving him the ball out there over and over, he’s going to shoot it. “That was too many,” Scott said, mentioning he failed to get Kobe to better spots in this game. He should have played decoy more in this game. I thought when he made a pass to Hibbert for a dunk that he might have realized the Sixers were really focused on him after his hot start. Defensively, he had some real breakdowns. There was one defensive stand where he did just that, stood and pointed out switches, then didn’t recover to the man he was supposed to cover and we gave up a three. Scott will blame the youth but Kobe, Lou and even Metta were pretty awful on D tonight. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-26 shooting (4-17 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He drained a three off a screen a few seconds into the game to a roar. Next time down, he sank a long three after losing his man badly on a pull-back dribble. He missed his next three, Russell got it back and kicked out, Kobe drained his third three on three trips down the floor to open the game, wow, crowd loving it. He airballed the three next time down. He missed a turnaround in the post next t time down. He crossed over his man badly again and swished the 19-footer. He missed a three next time down (Kobe 11, Sixers 15). He missed a 35-footer, that was a crazy shot. Same possession, he grabbed an offensive board and scored the layup. He was blocked on a poorly executed Dirk fade from the elbow. His pass in transition was picked off. He missed a three, not quite getting his legs under him. He drew Okafor to him and jump passed to Hibbert for the dunk. He missed a wide open corner three. He sank a face-up three after faking a handoff. He ball stopped, wound the clock down and bricked badly on iso. He missed a chuck from three next time down. He had 16 points on 6-16 shooting (4-11 from three). Second Half: He missed a forced wing three. He missed a wide open three. He made a tech FT. He missed a chuck from the corner out of a long deadball. He missed another three. He blew past his man with the first step and reversed around the help D. He attacked and threw it right to a defender. No D out of a timeout, and he gave up a three. He spun to lose his man, up faked another but was blocked by a third. He then chucked a wing three and missed. He got into the paint and bounced it to Randle for the dunk. He missed a three after pumpfaking a Sixer to fly by (should have tried to draw the foul). He missed a lefty layup out of a timeout. He drew FTs on a fake at the three line, he made just one of the three. He dribbled a ball of his foot on the break and was tied up. He missed a corner three.

Clarkson -- -- It seemed like he could have gotten into the lane or midrange at will. Our young guards did a good job being aggressive. He gets some run when Kobe and Russell sit where he can really call his number consistently. “I can only control what I can control. I’m just trying to keep playing,” Clarkson said. It will be interesting when Kobe isn’t here next year, how much Clarkson throttles things up. He’s got a similar motor as Kobe on the court, so he should be able to drop some big numbers on teams. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 9-19 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 38 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He was swatted in transition on a ball fake that didn’t fool anyone. No close out and his man hit the three. He missed a runner. He attacked the paint and hit the floater. Nice challenge forcing a double clutch on a jumper. He sank the pull-up elbow jumper off the high screen. Great cut to take a pass, then quickly return it to Hibbert for the dunk. He missed a running three at the buzzer. Second Half: He choked an easy layup driving down the middle of the lane. He airballed a wide open 14-footer. He sank the step-back at the FT line next time down. He blew past his man for an easy layup. He nearly lost the handle, got it back and sank the wide open 16-footer. He had to force up a leaning 20-footer with a man on and swished it as the shotclock went off. He attacked, pivoted and banked the one-hander. He froze a defender on an inside-out dribble just enough to finish over him on the drive. He nearly banked in a halfcourt heave at the buzzer. He missed an open 17-footer. He sank a wing three. He missed an open elbow jumper.

Randle -- -- “We let our foot off the gas,” Randle said. The Lakers had a big first half lead and faded badly. We saw Randle finish a layup nicely over a defender with his right hand. It’s just a matter of time and repetition before he’s comfortable with the offhand. That was his only score that he created. The rest of his points were off nice setups by teammates. I think my favorite was the double high screen he rolled off of with Russell attacking the paint and drawing defenders. That allowed Randle to get an easy dunk when Russell dumped it to him. The Lakers are so poor at consistently running these types of plays, but glad to see Randle starting to roll a little more. He had some issues with foul trouble in this game, picking up those rookie fouls. Again, something you typically only learn the hard way in your first season. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-12 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a turnaround from the midpost. He attacked in transition, knocked a man down and scored the layup with his right (nice offhand finish). He scored an And-1 coming off the Russell screen in the triangle, taking the pass and finishing through contact, he missed the FT. His man reached, missed, and Randle attacked past Okafor for the layup. He missed a drive. He missed a couple attempts in the paint in a crowd. He drew FTs when Russell threaded the needed to him past a defender’s head, he made both. Bad foul on a reach 35 feet from the hoop to give up FTs. He dunked off the drive and dish from Russell, who drew the defenders. He had 10 points and 6 boards. Second Half: He crossed over and was blocked on the layup for a jumpball. He hit Russell on the give and go for a layup. He attacked in transition and was blocked on a layup. He dunked off the bounce pass from Kobe. He missed a three.

Russell -- -- Interesting game from Russell. I thought he played with a little more fire and urgency than we’ve seen. He seemed to be edging up elements of his game every week. He had a throwdown in this one for (I think) the first time this season. He also showed some bursts of speed, turning the corner off a screen or in transition and on some off-ball cuts. That shows he’s got that gear in him. Fans should be pleased about seeing more of that. Once his shooting translates to this level with more consistency (that’s the issue with rookies, consistency), you’ll see some much better numbers because he was missing wide open, great looks. Russell had some superb passes in this game. A few of those didn’t go for assists, but led to FTs. (One to Randle zipped past a defender’s ear and the defender was facing him.) Both he and Okafor scored 12 points on 14 shots. Both had their moments. Defensively, Russell didn’t get credited with any steals, but he stripped the ball off a man for a turnover and deflected another pass off a Sixer. The Sixer PGs weren’t a threat. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-14 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: Great job pulling down an offensive board and kicking it back out as he went to the floor and Kobe sank a three off it. He missed a sideline three on a low kickout. He missed a wing three. He hit Nick on the pick and pop for a three. Out of a timeout he hit a pull-up 15-footer over Okafor, working off the high screen. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. Wow, sweet no-looker right past a defender’s ear (defender was facing him), right to Randle under the hoop for FTs on the dunk attempt (no assist, but that was sweet). He stripped the ball off his man to get a stop. He turned the corner with speed (going to his right off a staggered double screen), drew the D under the hoop and bounced to Randle for the dunk. He missed a three on the same play next time down. Head up, he spotted Hibbert open about 60 feet away and fed him for FTs (another non-assist). He was picked for a three the other way. He had 2 points, 2 boards and 4 assists. Second Half: He couldn’t hang onto a pass in the paint, losing it out of bounds. He scored a layup on a quick cut off the Randle give and go. He probed the paint and drew FTs, he made one. He was blocked on a drive. First dunk of the season I think, he attacked off the Kobe screen at the left wing and threw it down over the closing D. He missed an open wing jumper. Nice job knocking a ball loose on an inbounds to get a turnover. He missed an elbow jumper short. He sank a three on a kickout. Great read, deflecting a bad cross court pass off a Sixer on the other end. He missed a great look at a wing pull-up from 15 feet out. He attacked the paint and hit the floater. He missed a wing three.

Hibbert -- -- Some decent D on Okafor as Scott tried to match them up as much as possible. Okafor still had a couple nice moments against him, but wasn’t really a focal point or a factor, really. Hibbert wasn’t much of one either, but did put it a good effort. He picked up a tech as a Sixer guard held his arm after a deadball and Roy tried to shake him loose, then shove a few other players. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He swiped an Okafor pass on a switch. He dunked off the great jump pass from Kobe. He swatted Okarfor’s jumper on a great defensive sequence. Somehow left alone out of a timeout, Russell zipped a 60-foot pass to him and he was fouled on the dunk attempt, he made both FTs. He dunked off the interior feed from Clarkson. Second Half: He missed the short lefty jumphook. He got tangled up and shoving match followed when the defender wouldn’t let got of his arm (he nearly shoved a ref in the process). He swatted a shot in the paint before sitting for Bass. He kept an offensive board alive.

Williams -- -- All his damage to the Sixers was in the first half, when he scored 9 points on 2-2 shooting. All his damage to the Lakers was in the second half, missing all four shots he took and picking up a turnover. A tale of two halves for sure. There was really no chemistry when he was out there in that second half. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-6 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He swished a jumper from the top of the key. He got a man in the air and drew FTs next time down, he made both. He sank a quick-fire wing three. He hit Bass on the pick and pop for the short one. Nice reach on a mismatch to strip a bigger man on the post entry pass. He suckered his man into reach on a three to draw FTs, he made two. He had 9 points on 2-2 shooting (4-5 FTs). Second Half: He missed a fade from the sideline. He missed a three on the pindown. He missed the runner trying to draw contact. He stepped out of bounds on a drive, then no D on the other end and gave up a dunk. He missed a wing three.

Young -- -- Asked what the team needs to do, Nick said, “Not being a circus act. We’ve got to go out there and play basketball, share the ball. Just don’t be clowns out there, that’s basically what we’ve been looking like.” They definitely need to figure out a way to find a balance with the Kobe retirement tour. It’s not easy for the team. Nick with just 3 shots in this one in 12 minutes. After the game, Horry said Nick was biting his tongue on what he really wanted to say, but he pretty much said it. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-3 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He drew FTs when the Lakers broke the press and got it to him, he made one. He missed a wing three. He missed a wing three. He sank a three on the pick and pop with Russell. Second Half: Horrible inbounds pass, layup the other way.

Nance -- -- Not much from Larry in this one, except for erasing a buck by Lou with offensive interference. He did have an offensive board to reset the offense, but not much time. “I got chills,” Nance said of the Kobe tribute tonight. The Stats: He didn’t score and had 2 boards, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 5 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He erased 2 points touching the rim on a Williams’ bank that fell in.

World Peace -- -- We played Metta and Kobe at both PF and SF, going super small at times. Big difference in the +7 from Metta and -21 from Kobe as they often subbed in and out for each other. Not a great defensive game from Metta, some good box outs, but some poor gambles that cost us. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 0-3 shooting (0-2 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: Bad double team and his man scored. He probed the paint and threw it away after a fumble. He lost his man badly on a behind-the-back dribble and drew FTs, he made both. He didn’t hit rim on a wing three. He attacked off the three line, fending off the Sixer with his strength and drew FTs, he made both. He was knocked down at midcourt on an inbounds pass for FTs, he made one. Second Half: He was blocked when Russell found him under the hoop. He missed an open wing three out of a timeout. He threw a pass out of bounds.

Bass -- -- Not much from Bass in this one. He did hit a couple of jumpers. Hopefully, that is becoming more consistent. The fact that we didn’t get smoked with the super small lineups was good. But we really aren’t playing greater than the sum of our parts on this team. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He sank the wing jumper off the pick and pop. No help D to give up a layup. Second Half: He swished the baseline jumper on the kickout.

Scott -- -- You can’t lose to the 0-18 Sixers… A hot start from Kobe, scoring the Lakers first 11 points (including three threes on the first three trips down court). Lakers trailing, however… They were tied 17-17 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Kobe sat for Metta down 20-19… Williams in for Russell… Young in for Randle, Bass in for Hibbert (Okafor sitting). Lakers down 1… The Lakers led 33-26 after the first quarter… He started a Bass, Kobe, Young, Williams, Russell lineup (Kobe at PF)… Okafor back in, Scott stays with Bass… After our inability to secure defensive boards finally registered on Scott, he brought back in Hibbert and Randle shortly later… Kobe sat for Metta, Lakers up 8… Randle out for Metta at PF when strapped with foul trouble… Foul fest on D by the Lakers in the second quarter, giving up a lot of FTs… Poor close to the half to have their 14-point lead trimmed down… The Lakers led 58-50 at the half. The Lakers shot 6-20 from three, Kobe was 4-11 from three. Lakers losing the fastbreak 6-1… The Sixers tied it up as the Lakers started scoreless and Kobe missing. Scott called a timeout. He needs to reel Kobe in, who is chucking like crazy… They finally scored after 4 minutes… Down 2, he sat Randle and Russell for Nance and Williams… Lakers down 2 when Bass came in for Hibbert… Metta in for Kobe… Clarkson the only thing working this quarter… The Lakers trailed 80-75 heading into the fourth… He started a Bass, Kobe, Young, Williams, Russell lineup… Russell’s dunk to cut it to 6 forced a timeout… They slipped back to trail by 12. Kobe and Bass sat for Hibbert and Clarkson… Down 14, he brought in Randle… Down 10 when Kobe returned with 4 minutes left for Metta… Sixers called a timeout up by 8 with 3:46 left… Timeout with 2:28 left, still down 8… Lakers just awful… Fastbreak tonight: Lakers 2 points, Sizers 12… Lakers 8-34 from three, Sixers 14-32…

First! Thank's DB. I appreciate everything you do. P.S. Was there ever a DB write-up for the 81 game? Can't remember. Would make a great sticky!

DrumR, they used to prune the board to see if that would help server speed. The 81 point game got pruned, I think. I probably have it somewhere on a computer and could bring it back to life. I remember sitting where I am right now and the phone ringing off the hook while I was doing my write up. I was maybe an hour behind on the DVR and not answering the phone, I never do when the game is going...my wife usually screens the calls.

She already knew what happened and was needling me a little bit to go do something for her and I was like ... "Wait, ummm, Kobe's having a pretty good game here..." that was probably midway through his 81.

So, the game write-up does exist somewhere.

If the management really can tolerate this, then they are indeed all in for tanking. And I will officially stop believing in everything Mitch says (he said he hoped for a 50% winning team. If that's your target, do something about it).

Mitch doesn't give anything to believe in as is, so nothing different there with how concealed he is about Laker plans. He is the master of political correctness and stealth.

When Nick "Swaggy P" Young is talking about playing as a team and not looking like clowns out there on the bball court, you just know you're f***ed.

What a joke this franchise has become. I keep hearing Jeannie saying " It's what Dad would have wanted" in the back of my mind every time I watch these poor bastards take the court. Poor Dr. Buss is rolling around in his grave right now. His kids shat the bed... and we're all sleeping in it.

The tribute video was nice.

Ugly second half.

Embarrassing to say the least.

Kobe deserves his accolades but his unrestrained chukking is starting to stifle the progress of the youngsters who've become more than willing to give him the ball and just spectate.

Kobe doesn't give a crap anymore. He's laughing on the sidelines after the Lakers lose badly to an 0-18 team, and he's cracking jokes and smiling in the post game after he put up another horrific performance. It's up to the coach to bring him back in line, but Scott is a moron. I hope the season ticket holders really lay into Mitch about Scott and the direction of the team during the upcoming meeting.

I don't think a young Bryant would have tolerated Scott or Old Bryant taking all these shots.

Agreed.

Thanks DB. Appreciate the time and effort as always.

I don't know what to make of it anymore. I'm sad that Kobe is retiring. Especially he's the one Laker I connect with the most. I only started watching basketball when I was 8 back in the 92-93 season. So Kobe coming in up until now.. I can't believe it's been 20 years, just like that.

At the same time, look at how terrible this team is right now and how mediocre Kobe is. So what are they going to do? Why it's the Kobe Bryant show. He can shoot at will because who cares right? Is Scott or management going to bench him for being 200% selfish at this point? Of course not. When was the last time a NBA team that's doesn't have NBA quality players still sell out tickets to arenas all over North America for home AND away games? I don't think that's ever happened.

I personally don't see how Russell and others can "develop" and learn with this kind of **** show night in and night out. So yeah... to sum up. Sad and bummed out about Kobe retiring because that means we're all old. Yet pissed and annoyed at what has become of us.

Why the hell is Kobe shooting so damn much? It's like he's on another planet. I just don't get it. His teammates have to be totally pissed at him.

Unless there's a behind the scenes agreement to just cash your checks and shut up, we're tanking.

Which is stupid given the pick is top 3 protected. But what other choice do we have now?

Dr. Buss is rolling over in his grave

If it was only tonight....

He is a master in that, yes.

But if he (and a head coach) intsists that there is a chance we are going to make playoffs in preseason and the team then goes 2-18, then he kind of loses his credibility.

I'm not sure that's what a GM should want.

Could you please repost it? I remember getting home and every basketball site had crashed and hoping I could read it. I'd love to save it

Mitch has a roster that should be doing better.

Kobe wanted to find out how many bullets he had in his holster and found out that he had none. How long will Byron tolerate Kobe shooting blanks from the 2nd quarter on?

Wasn't it Dr. Buss' dying wish for them to let Kobe go out on his own terms. I seem to remember that. I guess honoring your late father's wishes don't mean anything to entitled fans...like we were gonna be good anyway. If you believed Mitch I have property to sell you too

Thanks DB. The third quarter tailspin gave me fits and blind spells. I stopped watching. Who wouldn't ?

It confounds me how poorly prepared the Lakers looked after the halftime break. Has Byron mastered the art of oblique tanking by design (in support of a franchise commandment) ? If not, that was as poor a job to take advantage of an obvious win opportunity as I've seen from our club. Owww.
