On Our Heels Quickly… With the Lakers able to get one of their three wins this season against Detroit, they might have been optimistic to come up with a W in this one.

That chance ended about 3 minutes after tipoff when they were down 15-0. That’s usually the Lakers M.O., on their heels from the start and falling behind big early on.

“We didn’t get any open shots,” Clarkson said. The Lakers had no assists in the first quarter.

The Pistons had 65 points at the half. The Lakers had too many turnovers early on and also looked confused in their halfcourt D in how to handle Drummond.

Meanwhile, Kobe’s last stop in Detroit left them little to enjoy, making just 2-15. The Lakers fell 111-91 after a full fourth quarter of garbage time.

“We’re trying to react instead of being the initiator and coming and trying to throw the first punch,” Scott said. “We’re almost on the ropes it seems like and then we try to react to it then and it’s too late.”

Kobe -- -- He wasn’t feeling good before the game and was misfiring from start to finish. Just an awful game, shooting wise, starting 0-9. He was tapped on a couple of early jumpers, then just started spraying them all over after that. He didn’t get his first score until midway through the third quarter. Hard for the team to stay in a game with both Kobe missing and then Clarkson struggling, as well. He was sick, but you also have to wonder about the minutes catching up on him. “I’m pretty sure he’ll feel a little better tomorrow,” Scott said. Perhaps they will sit him a bit more on home games and he will push through as he makes his last stop in many of those road arenas. “Hopefully, Kobe will get to the point where he’ll start to, like Garnett, don’t mind being on the bench in the fourth quarter and let some of the young guys play, just so he can be standing in that last game,” Worthy said. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-15 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 3 boards The Action: He got tapped on a wing three to start the game. He missed an elbow jumper. He missed a sideline three. He was blindsided for points the other way. He set up Hibbert on a jump pass for FTs. He missed a 17-footer. He was tapped again on a good look at a wing three. He was stripped on a drive. He missed a tough turnaround up against the shotclock. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He didn’t score on 0-7 shooting. Second Half: He blew past his man, but had no explosion at the rim and threw the pass away. He missed a good look at a wing three on a nice ball reversal. He missed a wing jumper on iso. He finally sank a wing three for his first points nearly 5 minutes into the second half. He missed a fade in the lane. He missed a long wing three on a kickout (not good shot selection). He scored a layup when Russell hit him filing the lane on the break. He missed the baseline pull-up. He missed a chuck from three on iso. He swiped a kickout to end the third quarter.

Clarkson -- -- He had, I think, three airballs in this game. Just not right with his shot, which has been money all season. Defensively, little resistance. Not a good combination with both him and Kobe unable to be effective. Kobe has been consistently poor this season, Jordan consistently effective. He has had bad games about as often as Kobe as had good ones, sadly. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He missed a wing jumper off the pinch post. He coughed up a drive, layup the other way. He drew FTs on a pull-up off the screen, he made one FT. He airballed a baseline turnaround. He swished a leaning pull-up jumper from the FT line. He didn’t hit rim on an up-and-under. He attacked, hung and missed the short one. He hit a pull-up wing jumper. He swished a pull-up elbow jumper next time down. He missed a short one in the lane. Second Half: His pass was deflected for a steal. He airballed a pull-up on the wing. He airballed a wing three. He missed a wing jumper, wide open.

Randle -- -- His game was mostly working off garbage sequences where he creates something out of nothing. “Give Julius an opportunity and he’ll create something for himself,” Worthy said. He has some success to that, especially when he can get to the paint and hit that little turnaround. Good job getting that 15-11 double-double in just 24 minutes. “Biggest thing is to just control what you can,” Randle said. He’s flying under the radar some because he doesn’t qualify as a rookie. These games would be creating a lot of buzz if people thought of him that way. He needs to work on that pick and roll game. I can’t believe it’s as bad as it is right now. Curious if we even coach that because he’s consistently floating, setting weak picks and not rolling hard. There was a pass tonight where Russell put it right where he expected Randle to be, but Randle never rolled. Turnover. We run very little of this offensively, so mistakes like these will at least serve as an all-too-rare learning opportunity. That’s the key. We need repetition and we’ll get better. We just aren’t doing it much right now. You’ve got to think this will be part of his bread and butter later in his career. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-9 shooting (5-7 from the line) to go with 11 boards and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He airballed an up and under. He missed a step-back wing jumper on iso. He was hit on a jumper in the lane (late whistle), he made one FT. He iso’d, powered through the contact and scored the And-1 layup at the front of the rim, he made the FT. He scored the short one in the lane off the two-man game with Russell. He pushed out a rebound and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked across the lane and hit the little runner. He had 10 points on 3-5 shooting and 8 boards at the half. Second Half: First play of the half, he picked up his man’s fourth foul on an iso drive across the lane, he made one FT. He tried backing his man down and was way short on the jumphook. He posted him up and swished the turnaround in the middle of the paint. He didn’t roll and Russell threw the pass out of bounds where Randle should have been. He attacked across the lane, missed, bounced up quickly and scored the easy layup.

Russell -- -- Some excellent moments from Russell in this game. He hit a nice jumper coming off the weakside double screen on the triangle. Later, they ran that same sequence with Bass/Nance and instead of taking the jumper, Russell worked it into a two-man game to setup Bass for a dunk (I think he did that on his own as Bass seemed not ready at first to go into that sequence). He also had a nice Euro-step around a defender trying to take a charge for a score. That was impressive. Wish he could have had a few more minutes in garbage time. No need to run Lou all that time. The turnover number is a little deceptive. One pass went right off Bass’s hands that should have been a score. Another pass went right out of bounds as Randle never rolled to the hoop, again should have been another score. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: Flat, telegraphed pass on the perimeter, dunk the other way. He was fouled on an elbow pull-up after working on the wing screen and scored the Lakers first points 3 minutes in by making both FTs. He pushed out the break, the D didn’t commit and he scored a layup. Nice switch off a screen and he drew a charge on the defender. He got backdoored for a layup. He scooped up a loose ball and swished the 10-footer. He didn’t force the jumper, pulled it out for a quick two-man action and hit Bass for the dunk. He drew a Piston offensive foul on the other end fighting through a screen. He was picked on the perimeter, layup the other way. He attacked and missed the pull-up 15-footer. He curled off the weakside double screen out of the triangle and swished the 16-footer straight away. He got tapped on a wing three. He hit Randle off the two-man game for the score. He missed a baseline pull-up on the same play when Randle didn’t roll. He had 8 points and 2 assists at the half. Second Half: He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He Euro-stepped right around a defender in transition and scored. He poked the ball from his man (almost a block from behind), pushed the ball up court and hit Kobe for the layup. He swiped another pass (or scooped up the loose ball), pushed it out and scored the layup a few seconds later.

Hibbert -- -- He was worried about Drummond on the offensive glass and that messed with some of his help D. The team didn’t quite know how to adjust. I would have liked to see much more team rebounding and more help from others, of course. But at the very least, they need to get back and team rebound. The tricky part for Roy is if he has to go help on dribble penetration, the Pistons would just lob over him to Drummond and that was that. No weakside help. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards (2 offensive), 2 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He was stripped on a drive when Russell set him up. He blocked Drummond from behind, but lost the handle when Randle tried to find him in transition the other way. He missed a layup, but tipped it back in. He drew FTs on the high-low jump pass from Kobe in the paint, he made both. Second Half: He posted up, backed his man down, missed, but scored the easy putback. He swished a 16-footer when his man sagged off him. He was stripped, not chinning the rebound and protecting it.

Williams -- -- “When teams get off to a great start like that, the basket becomes wider,” Lou said. He’ll be back in Toronto in the next game. He got some extra run in garbage time tonight (personally, I’d rather he split that garbage time with Russell, give the young guys some more run). Lou padded the stats a little during that stretch. Good job drawing FTs. He missed a few FTs more than normal tonight, however. The three ball looked good. Hopefully, that’s starting to come around. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 6-12 shooting (3-6 from three, 6-9 from the line) to go with 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He drew FTs on a wing jumper, he made both. He curled into the lane off a handoff and hit the short runner. He missed a chuck from the wing. He suckered his man into a reach on a sideline three, he made two of the three FTs. He missed a baseline fade. He missed a wing three. He drew FTs on a drive, he made one. He was confused about a switch with Kobe and fouled Blake for an And-1 three. He had 7 points on 1-4 shooting (5-7 FTs). Second Half: He threw a pass into the backcourt. He attacked Blake in early offense and scored a layup. He sank a three off the high screen. He hit a tough three, moving to his left off a Sacre screen. He missed another three next time down. He missed a baseline jumper off the inbounds. He hit a baseline floater. He missed a wing runner in early offense looking for the foul. He sank a three straight away. He drew FTs on a jumper and made one.

Young -- -- He was ejected after getting knocked down on a dunk attempt. I’m sure some of that was frustration with Scott. “I was kind of surprised the way Nick reacted to him,” Scott said, saying it seemed like an overreaction. Scott said he thought it was more frustration than anything. He got in the game in the first half when we had foul trouble. In the second half, it was garbage time. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 7 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He missed a three, short and fading as he went up. He missed a running three at the buzzer. Second Half: He missed a corner three. He iso’d and missed a bad chuck, should have passed it. He took an outlet, was going to dunk and got knocked down (Lakers down huge and in garbage time), he bounced back up quick and shoved the defender for a flagrant-2.

Nance -- -- He got selected to take the FTs for Nick Young on his ejection. He made both. Pretty invisible other than that when he was out there. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 2-2 shooting from the line to go with 1 offensive board and 1 turnover in 13 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He was chosen to get FTs on Nick’s ejection and made both.

World Peace -- -- Not much impact on this one. He got into some foul trouble in the first half and later got in on the garbage time run. Would have been nice if we had Anthony here for some garbage time, but probably later in the season. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a drive, but Bass cleaned it up. He charged on a drive down the lane. Second Half: He missed a tough jumper on iso up against the shotclock.

Bass -- -- Good to see a little chemistry with he and Russell on the two-man game. We have far too little of that with this team and it feels like we’re weeks behind where we should be, even with all the new bodies on this team. Not a lot of minutes for him as we went to Sacre for a stretch of garbage time. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting to go with 5 boards and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He hit an iso baseline pull-up jumper. He couldn’t finish a layup in traffic. He gathered an offensive board and slammed it back down. Nice fronting D on the other end to force a 3-second violation on his man. He dropped a great feed from Russell at the front of the rim (that pass hit him in the hands). He kept a miss alive and Russell scored off it. He dunked off the nice bounce pass from Russell off the two-man sequence. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Huertas -- -- He got to run the garbage time unit for the fourth quarter. Hard to really judge much when it’s third tier players out there and the game’s a blowout. He did well with his minutes, hitting a three and scoring an And-1 layup. He ran the pick and roll well (better screens by this unit then some of our first unit). He led the Lakers with 4 assists in his quarter of play. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting (1-1 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed a baseline jumper. He hit Kelly trailing the break for a score. He set up Kelly for FTs. He attacked off the screen and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He hit Sacre in the paint for the score. Poor job not getting the ball quickly to Sacre when he had his man completely sealed under the hoop. He flipped in a scoop attacking down the lane. He swished a wing three working off the pick. He hit Lou for the three. He was blocked on a runner.

Kelly -- -- The third unit was able to dig a little of that big lead down and even force a couple of timeouts from SVG. They never really threatened but they played like they wanted to make an impact. Kelly was a able to scratch out a few points and was fairly aggressive. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He scored a layup trailing the break. He drew FTs getting fouled on the layup, he made both. XXX He posted and drew FTs on the turnaround, he made one. He missed a wing three.

Sacre -- -- Some nice screens while he was out there. Wish a few of our other bigs could do that with a little more consistency. It helped Huertas and Lou, and Sacre also scored a bucket off the screen-roll, as well. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He took the pass from Huertas on the screen-roll and scored the one-hander in the paint. He missed a jumphook in the post. He missed a flat jumphook.

Scott -- -- The Lakers were quickly down 11-0 and Scott called a timeout after just over 2 minutes… Down 15-0 after just 3 minutes. Well done… The Lakers went on an 8-0 run (4 by Russell, 4 by Hibbert) and they cut the lead to 15-8 to force a timeout… Russell out for Lou Lakers down 6… Hibbert out for Bass, Lakers down 6 (Drummond sat with 2 fouls)… Lakers down 12 when Metta and Nance came in for Kobe and Randle… The Lakers trailed 32-19 after the first quarter… Usual second unit with Russell at PG… Lou in for Metta after a few minutes, Lakers down 13 still… Hibbert in to match up with Drummond… Randle in for Nance… Down 20, Lou out for Clarkson… Metta in for Kobe, down 21… He sat Metta quickly after picking up his third and Nick came in with 4 minutes left, Lakers down 21… The Lakers trailed 65-42 at the half. Pistons were 7-14 from three, Lakers 0-7… The Lakers trailed by 22 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. They were starting to get out on the break for easy ones… He sat Russell for Lou out of that… Nance in for Randle… Bass in for Hibbert… He played Kobe the whole third, should be done for the night… Lakers trailed 90-65 heading into the fourth… Extended garbage time… He emptied the bench to go with a Sacre, Kelly, Young, Williams, Huertas lineup… Nance in for the ejected Young… Metta in for Nance…

Took my three boys to their 1st Lakers game, drove 5 hours from Pennsylvania to see Kobe play one last time.

Pistons jumped out 15-0. Byron just stands there arms crossed. During timeouts, the coaches meet for about 3 out of the 4 minutes of the timeout. Then Byron diagrams something for like 20 seconds and they come out of the timeout and turn it over.

There is no motion or flow at all to the offense and little to no helping out on defense at all.

The talent on this team isn't great, but it's definitely not as bad as they look either.

Sucks that Kobe was sick and shot so bad, but the crowd loved him anyways and Lakers fans were at least half the arena. Purple and Gold forever!!

Sorry Kobe couldn't deliver a better game you and your boys, but the intro and all that seemed pretty cool.

Thank you , DancingBarry for all you do all season long. I truly appreciate it. These last 2 plus years have been brutal.

The intro for Kobe was very cool and respectful for one of the all time greats.

You probably need to bring the whole family for the karma needed.

I just wished Kobe had a better night for you all or a Laker win. At any rate, how would you grade Russel seeing him on the floor?

Glad that you are representing Purple and Gold in Detroit!

Byron's imitation of The Zen Master (leave the lineup on the floor to see if they can figure out what they need to do) has not worked in this game.

When will the starters get PISSED that they are consistently getting blown out. With stories during the Showtime Era where the players kept each other accountable, who in the starting lineup will keep everyone in line - acknowledging the "Kobe Factor" is in play but somebody needs to say something to help the team win (or at least score one before the second quarter)

Thanks DB. I really don't know how you manage to stay tuned in and sharp. I caught some of the fourth quarter and really, I had to turn away. You are tougher than I.

Russel looks bigger in person. He's the same height as Kobe. Long arms. He's fluid and got to some spots he wanted to -to create his own shot. I know that was a concern for some on here. Defensively, he doesn't seem physically strong enough yet.
