Farewell, Boston… The roars of “Kobe…Kobe…” with a minute left in the game probably made some of you flash back to the time we heard “MVP” chants in this arena for him. This was last time we went to battle with Kobe Bryant in Boston.

Let that sink in for a moment.

He started slow, but didn’t disappoint as he threw a couple of daggers down the stretch, including a long three with 1:40 left. That was a killer.

While he’s not the same Kobe of years past, we’re fortunate to have these moments. It took a team effort to pull of the 112-104 victory in Boston.

I loved the fight in our young guys. Clarkson, while he had a big mistake in crunch time, also put the team on his shoulders for several possessions on his way to a team-high 24 points. He didn’t back down from the challenge. And both Randle and Russell in their first games in Boston, stood tall and battled strong. Randle with a 15-point, 12-board, 4-assist effort and Russell with 16 points, 6 boards and 3 assists.

“The first half, I thought our energy was fantastic,” Scott said. They definitely were playing a little more amped up than we’ve seen. They were pushing the tempo well, getting out in transition, and had some excellent moments with cuts off ball. Those are both areas where the team has been weak this year. A lot of that was by their young guys.

“They showed that the Lakers are going to be in good hands after Kobe leaves,” Brandon Bass said, returning to his former team and coming up with some key plays himself in crunch time.

At the end of the night, it was still about Kobe saying farewell to this rivalry.

“I wish I could do more to show my gratitude,” Kobe said. He was truly driven by this rivalry and appreciated the moment tonight. It was bittersweet to witness the last time Kobe wore that purple and gold armor while going to war in Boston.

Kobe -- -- With his family courtside, his daughters with their first time in Boston to watch him, Kobe chalked up his first double-double of the season. He took to the court with cheers in his intro and then boo’s every time he touched it early on. He struggled a bit early. “It was unbelievable. It felt great to get boo’d,” he said. He mentioned how the antagonism from the fan base impacted him over the years. “It drove me to maniacal proportions,” Kobe said. The crowd and the rivalry helped fuel that fire in him. There were a lot of Laker jerseys in the crowd tonight. They roared when he scored and got louder as the game went along. As much as Celtic fans tried to drown then out, they showed their support. Late in the game, when Kobe hit that dagger three, they owned the arena. Kobe did, too. Amazing moment and great to see the Black Mamba with a strong fourth quarter to help close the Celtics out. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-18 shooting (2-5 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 3 assists, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He missed a baseline pull-up jumper. He lobbed to Nance on the break for the dunk. Not close on a fallaway from the mid post. He forced a turnover on his man on the sideline. He missed a drive taking contact with no call. He missed a tech FT. He spun to the middle of the lane and missed the short one at the front of the rim. He missed a three, got his miss, then threw it away. Bad cross-court pass next time down turnover. He missed an 18-footer. He was blocked trying to create in the low post. Short on an open 17-footer next time down. He attacked left, hung and scored the layup to the roar from the Kobe fans in the crowd. Next time down, he attacked from the right and took it all the way for the layup. He missed a wing three and didn’t get back in transition to give up a score. He backed his man down and missed the lefty post attempt. He attacked and kicked to Randle for the three. He had 4 points, 6 boards and 3 assists. Second Half: Bad inbounds pass (I think he expected Nance to cut to the hoop and he didn’t). He pumped a couple of times and missed the short one. He backed his man down, spun baseline and dunked softly with both hands. He drew FTs getting hit on a jumper, he made both. He drained a wing three next time down. He missed a long three up against the clock. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He swished a long three on a kickout with 1:40 left. Great job battling on the defensive glass and saving it back to a teammate. He was fouled with 25.8 seconds left, he made one FT.

Clarkson -- -- One of those grow-up games for Clarkson. There were times he put the team on his shoulders, and we let him. It wasn’t always pretty, but the team showed a lot of confidence in letting him take the lead on multiple possessions down the stretch in crunch time. He had a nice And-1 and another tough layup. He was also picked for a score the other way. That tarnished the moment for him, but something he can learn from. He did pound the dribble a little too much during those stretches, but he came to play tonight. He led the team in scoring and did it efficiently. I loved some of the chemistry with him and Russell in this game. DLO found him cutting on the weakside for an And-1 layup. Jordan found Russell cutting backdoor for another layup. “I’m looking for him, he’s looking for me,” Clarkson said. He mentioned he and Russell ride each other a bit to get better. There’s a friendly rivalry going on here, I think. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 10-15 shooting (1-1 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a floater down the middle of the lane. He hit a quick floater off an interior feed from Roy. He backdoored his man, took the pass and dunked. He missed a wing jumper. He missed a layup on a drive. He cut from the weakside and Russell found him for the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He swished a pull-up wing jumper from 20 feet out. He sank a step-back jumper from the top of the key. He couldn’t finish over a big on a drive. He attacked baseline with the shotclock low, hung and reversed (very nice). He made a tech FT (Kobe letting him have that one). He swished a wing three. He drew FTs off the quick-fire outlet from Russell to ignite a break, he made both. He attacked and found Russell cutting baseline for the layup. He sank a wing pull-up when his man fell. He hit a big And-1 jumper drawing contact and hitting from about 17 feet out, he missed the FT, however. He let Thomas get past him too easily for a score. On the other end, he pounded the dribble, probed, backed it out, attacked, stumbled, kept going and banked in the tough layup. Too much dribbling on iso and he was picked for a huge score. He missed a leaner with 40 seconds left.

Williams -- -- That was a stealthy 19 points tonight. Super-efficient ball from Lou. Some excellent moments in the passing lanes defensively tonight. That helped get him out on the break for quick-strike scores. He also had a backdoor cut where we found him for a layup. All those quick-strike moments are why this was a stealthy 19 points. He just didn’t need to dominate the ball at all to be effective. Loved a couple of his passes tonight. He hit Russell cutting backdoor for a layup and also setup Bass for a couple of FTs in crunch time. Ideal kind of game from Lou. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-9 shooting (1-2 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: Hibbert rolled too slowly and Lou’s pass was picked off. He sank a pull-up wing three. He missed a wing three in early offense. He curled into the lane and drew contact on a drive, he made both FTs. He hit Clarkson baseline for a dunk. He somehow drew a whistle as he was backing the ball out and got FTs, he made both. He attacked to his left, Russell cut behind his man baseline and Lou bounced it to him for the layup (Lou loved that cut). He sank a jumper from the top of the key, curling for the handoff. He jumped a passing lane, swiped the ball and took it for the dunk. Quick feed up court to Bass who dunked on the break. He backdoored his man and Randle found him with the nice bounce pass for the layup. He had 13 points on 4-5 shooting and 2 assists. Second Half: He sank a fading baseline jumper off the handoff on the left side. He was backdoored for a layup. He jumped the passing lane and took it the distance for the layup. He hit a floater in transition, lulling the D to sleep. He was blocked on a drive. He hit Bass rolling for big FTs with over a minute left.

Hibbert -- -- A lot of small ball in this game, which limited Roy’s time. But he also wasn’t terribly effective out there. He was the only Laker not to score and defensively wasn’t making a major impact. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-5 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: Interior feed to Clarkson for the floater. Not close on a good look at a short jumphook. He missed a lefty jumphook. He blocked a shot from behind and controlled it. Second Half: He choked a layup at the front of the rim off a great feed from Kobe. He missed a jumphook working the post. He was stripped on a drive. Illegal screen, turnover.

Nance -- -- He turned and ankle and that cut his time short. Bummer because he was putting in another strong game. You can see the confidence growing in him (and the team in him). The first play of the game we tried to find him for a lob. He drew a foul, but I like the intention. We need to consistently try to run a set play for him like that. My favorite play might have been his iso on the left baseline where he jab-stepped then swished the jumper. That just showed the confidence was high. He didn’t try to pass it out. He called his own number. Hopefully, the ankle doesn’t swell up too much. He was in pain in the second half, but played through it. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He was fouled on a lob attempt from Kobe, but no FTs on the first play (I like it). He dunked off the lob from Kobe on the break. He jab stepped and swished the baseline jumper on iso. He went up high for an offensive board and reset the offense. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper, we kept it alive, got it back to him, he ball-faked and hit the FT jumper.

Randle -- -- You know Celtic fans are thinking about Randle and whether they should have taken him instead of Smart. I was hoping I’d hear Smart’s name when the Celtics drafted, leaving us with Julius. Randle showed flashes why tonight. He drained another three, but he also beasted his way to the rim for dunks, attacked with speed in transition for scores, worked the up-and-under to finish with his right, and found teammates with kickouts. A guy his size doing all of that? That’s the scary version of Randle that you hope becomes more consistent with experience and work. He was a wild horse out there at times, but that’s the rookie in him. Kid balled, showing the flashes of everything we want to see in the future. Randle with a big 15-12 double-double with 4 assists. He said Metta was in his ear pushing him all game. Marcus Smart: 4 points on 2-6 shooting, 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block in 11 minutes. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-16 shooting (1-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 12 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He attacked from the corner, spun back to his left hand and hit the jumphook. He crossed over Thomas (a PG) badly, attacked, missed and drew FTs on the follow up, he made one. He took an offensive board from behind a man and reset the offense. He missed a long jumper at the end of the quarter. He attacked from the wing and powered a layup past his man. He attacked across the lane and missed the short one. Great job losing his man on an up-and-under, but even better finishing with his right hand. Sweet backdoor bounce pass to Lou for a layup. He missed the open 16 footer. He attacked from the wing, just too strong, too fast and slammed with both hands (flexing after, beast-mode). He missed an off-balance fade trying to create against the shotclock. He swished the wing three on the Kobe kickout. He lost the handle trying to drive with a few seconds left in the half. He had 12 points on 5-10 shooting and 7 boards. Second Half: He attacked and kicked to Nick for the three. He iso’d off the weakside pinch post, attacked and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked, all kinds of contact with no call and he missed badly. He missed a drive. He airballed a jumphook on iso. He scooped up a loose ball, took it the distance and scored. He missed as drive to his left, then got scored on in the post on the other end. Bogus foul on Turner (looked like a very clean block by Julius).

Russell -- -- Really great job cutting baseline when teammates attacked off the dribble to get open for layups. D’Antoni used to set those types of plays up in early offense. These are just high IQ reads by Russell. That movement by Russell off ball really bodes well for the future chemistry with Clarkson. The two of them need to be able to do that while the other has the ball. Russell had a stretch of 7-straight points in the first half that forced a Celtic timeout. This game had a little of everything from him: threes, off-ball cutting for scores, a drive for a score, the pull-up from midrange, some setups for teammates and some quick outlets that put the team into transition opportunities. The box score probably doesn’t reflect how well he played in this one. I liked some of the fire he played with. He was showing a lot more emotion than usual (and was especially ticked when he missed a layup off another cut). Both he and Randle represented themselves well in Boston. Good sign. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-17 shooting (2-7 from three) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a leaner from the elbow. He hit Nick for the corner three in transition. He attacked strong side, Clarkson cut from the weak side and he no-looked to him for the And-1 layup. He got his man on his hip, attacked and scored the layup. His man went under a screen on a handoff and Russell hit the three. Quick attack off the high screen next time down and he hit the 18-foot pull-up. Sweet timed cut next time down as the Celtics watched Lou drive, he took the pass and scored the layup (forcing a timeout). He missed a three in early offense. He missed a heave from three to beat the shotclock. Quick board and outlet to Lou, who hit Bass streaking down court for the dunk. He had 9 points, 3 assists and 3 boards. Second Half: He was picked trying to post up. He momentarily lost Sullinger with a behind the back dribble, but was blocked when he recovered. Sweet, quick-fire outlet to Clarkson which allowed him to draw FTs in transition. He missed a long three. He swiped a kickout. Great cut again from the corner when Clarkson attacked and Jordan hit him for the layup. He missed a two-for-one three after losing Smart with a sweet dribble. He didn’t box out and gave up a putback dunk. He got it back on the other end with a three at the end of the quarter. He was picked on the perimeter. He swished a pull-up elbow jumper attacking off the three line to his right. He missed an open wing three. He missed a layup off another cut, he was ticked. He knocked a ball loose from his man and it led to a Randle breakaway score. He missed a runner but got it back and reset the offense.

Young -- -- “We just put it together,” Nick said. Some good D when we went small late in the game to help clamp down on the Celtics late. And some timely shooting off the bench, sinking a couple of threes and a baseline jumper. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-6 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 1 board and no fouls in 19 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He missed a three out of a timeout. He swished a corner three off the feed from Russell. He missed a wing jumper. Second Half: He let a man fly by and he swished the three. He iso’d and drained the baseline pull-up. He missed an off-balance 16-footer.

Bass -- -- “I had mixed emotions,” Bass said about his return to Boston. He represented the purple and gold well. He closed the game as our only legit big in the uber-small ball lineups. Great job hitting clutch FTs down the stretch (he made all four he took in crunch time). He also won a key jumpball with 40 seconds left. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 2-4 shooting (5-5 form the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He fought for an offensive board in a crowd, powered up and And-1 dunked (getting the Laker bench on their feet), he made the FT. He beat everyone down court and scored off the outlet. Second Half: He got tapped on a FT jumper. He missed a turnaround in the post. He was fouled with 1:13 left on a roll to the hoop, Lakers up 5, he made both clutch FTs. He won the jumpball with 40 seconds left. He was fouled with 23 seconds left up 6, he made both FTs.

Scott -- -- Good energy from the Lakers tonight… The Lakers had a 4-point lead when Russell checked in for Lou midway through the quarter. Kobe 0-4 to start… Nance out with two fouls for Randle with 4 minutes left, score tied… He sat Kobe and Hibbert for Bass and Young, score tied 30 seconds later. Lakers small ball against Celtics somewhat bigger unit off the bench… Lakers fell back by 5 when the timeout came… The Lakers trailed 27-24 after the first quarter… He started the Bass, Randle, Young, Lou, Russell unit… Lakers were down 4 when Kobe returned for Young after 2 minutes… After 7-straight points from Russell, the Celtics called a timeout, Lakers up 3. Key stretch in the first half here to take the lead… Nance in for Randle on that timeout… Nance back out after an ankle twist… Hibbert in for Bass… Lakers up 7 when Clarkson returned for Russell with 3 minutes left… The Lakers led 58-56 at the half. Just 4 turnovers for the Lakers… Russell in for Lou, Lakers up 5 midway through the third quarter… Young and Randle in for Nance and Kobe, Lakers up 6… Good energy and they doubled that lead… They extended it to 14 off a couple hoops by Nick… Bass in for Hibbert… The Lakers led 89-78 heading into the fourth. Good job by the second unit… He started a Bass, Randle, Young, Clarkson, Russell lineup, no Lou like the first half… Lou then came in for Clarkson at the 10:31 mark… The Celtics cut it to 6 and Scott called a timeout with 7:23 left… He brought in Kobe for Young… Clarkson in for Russell, Lakers up 6 with 4 to go… He sat Randle for Young, going very small with Bass at C, Lakers up 4… Clarkson taking the keys in crunch time… A bad whistle by the refs calling a shotclock violation on the Lakers when the ball hit the rim with 40 seconds left. Instead of Lakers controlling the ball (like they did off that miss), it was a jumpball. Huge possession, Lakers up 7. Thankfully Bass won it… Lakers hit their FTs down the stretch to take it…

Any win is fun this year but this one was special, beating the greenies.
Thanks DB.

This is up there with Nick Van Exel shutting down the Boston Garden with that fadeaway three. I jumped and screamed nearly as much when Kobe hit the three with like a minute and a half left in the game.

That was a really good game to watch. We looked like a quality young team last night. Great game overall by the young guys. Nance is really everywhere on the court, he's gonna be a great energy guy for us. Sometimes I see some flashes of that Kobe mentality in Clarkson, he had a great game tonight.

Kobe struggled all night but competed all the way as he ever does and that deep three was a great thank you gift for the Boston fans. Really good game by Bass and Lou too.

Really enjoyed this one, feels good to win.

Thanks DB, as always.

Kobe beat Boston in the 2010 Finals and he beat them the last time he played on the their parquet floor. He can now retire in peace.

It was great seeing Russell give it to Smart and Boston seeing Randle beast - when they could have drafted him? Priceless. The kids played like they knew what the Laker v. Boston rivalry means. Good to see them all step up their games.
