The Comeback Kids…Nearly… The Lakers gave up 25 points in the first 5 minutes of the game. They countered with 4 points of their own.

The game was seemingly over a few minutes after it started, and this was looking like another typical blowout. Thankfully, they didn’t keep up the 200+ point game pace. In fact, once Russell came in during the third quarter and Cousins sat with foul trouble, the Lakers rallied.

They did it behind their youth with Russell and Clarkson a potent one-two punch offensively. Brandon Bass came up big with multiple plays down the stretch defensively. The Laker defense was beyond awful for most of the game, but Bass and the youngsters changed that tone in the second half.

With Laker fans out it massive numbers to cheer on Kobe’s last game in Sacramento, this wasn’t the Kings crowd of old. Behind roars from Laker fans, the team dug their way out of a 25-point hole to take a lead in the final minutes.

Perhaps, they showed just a little too much youth. In one stretch, Clarkson and Russell had back-to-back turnovers. In the final minute, it was Randle with a charge and Clarkson getting the ball poked loose that finally did them in. They still had a chance to tie it, but Lou Williams couldn’t knock down a sideline three in our final possession. The Lakers fell 118-115.

From an entertainment standpoint, this one had quite a bit. Kobe had one final show for Sacramento. He was sinking threes, working the post, attacking the rim and even threw down a backdoor lob on his way to 28 points in three quarters. He sat the final quarter and let the youth take over. Russell and Clarkson nearly took that baton and ran with it.

Russell finished with 27 points, spraining his ankle on a play he took contact on and somehow finished over Cousins while turning the ankle and not getting the call. That could have been the play of the game if the refs didn’t swallow their whistle. “Tough break obviously for us and him,” Scott said.

Kobe -- -- His last game in Sacramento. He’s played some awesome ones there. He looked pretty awesome in the first half offensively, scoring 18 points on 7-12 shooting, including a lob dunk he got up on. He joined Kareem and Karl Malone as the only players to hit the 33,000-point mark. It probably seemed like old times as he wasn’t getting the calls he wanted in Sacramento, either. He would finish with 28 in three quarters. He cheered on the young guys from the bench in the fourth. “It’s important for them to figure out how to close those games out without me on the floor,” Kobe said. Great game from him offensively. He couldn’t move real well on D, but he looked like himself with the post ups, threes, drives to the paint and even the lob dunk. Asked about his memories here, “I don’t think anything will ever top game 7. Not the end of game 7 but the start,” Kobe said. He remembered the electricity of that game. He said looking up at the rafters of the retired jerseys of Webber, etc., he said if he hadn’t already decided to retire that would have made him. “What the hell am I still doing here?” he said. Vlade gave him a Charlotte Hornets jersey with a No. 8 on it. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 10-18 shooting (2-6 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He probed down the lane and was stripped on the first possession. He missed a 20-footer on his first attempt. He airballed a three. He probed to his right, pulled up and was fouled on the short one, he made one FT. He hit a short turnaround from the right side. He was fouled on a jumper from the wing, getting a man to bite on a pumpfake, he made both FTs. He attacked to his right and hit the pull-up, 10-footer in the lane. He missed a wing three. He blocked a big from behind on help D. He attacked across the middle, drew the D over to him and no-looked to Russell for the layup. He attacked right, muscled up an And-1 floater and made the FT. He attacked, jump-stepped, took contact and scored the layup (crowd going nuts for him “Kobe…Kobe…”). He attacked, was blocked, but got it back. He missed a chuck from three, frozen rope. Woah, he cut backdoor, took the lob and slammed, wow! He sank a 21-footer to beat the shotclock. He missed a tech FT. He posted up, worked side to side to finish with a drop step to the middle for the turnaround bank. Second Half: He hit Nance on an inbounds for an And-1 layup. He was fouled with no call and lost the ball. He swished a wing catch-and-shoot three. He knocked down another one next time down from the other side. He swished a corner pull-up jumper on the next trip down. He missed a three, way short a few plays later. He was fouled when Clarkson found him going backdoor, he made both FTs. He missed a long pull-up jumper and was irked at the no call. He attacked the rim, took contact and missed as he went to the floor, ticked there was no call.

Clarkson -- -- If you want to see how Clarkson and Russell can play together in the future, just look at this fourth quarter. Clarkson was attacking the paint and even had a clutch pull-up jumper. Russell was hitting jumpers and getting into the teeth of the D. Clarkson scored a number of times at the rim or got dribble penetration that our bigs were able to get to. He lost the ball on the key drive working of the high screen in the final seconds. “Rondo did a great job of reaching around and knocking the ball out of his hands,” Scott said. It wasn’t a good first half from Clarkson on either end. He was lost on D at times and ineffective offensively (great lob pass to Kobe, though). In that fourth, we put a lot on his shoulders. I wish Russell could have closed it with him. Great learning experience for Clarkson, however. You could see Kobe talking to him in crunch time on stoppages. That whole bench was into it behind their young guys and in their ears. Just a great learning experience. Too bad we couldn’t close it out and complete the massive comeback. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He attacked in transition and was stripped out of bounds. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He attacked, took contact with no call and missed. He made a tech FT. He missed a corner three. He gave up a 4-point play. He sank a pull-up 16-footer on iso straight away. Perfect lob pass to Kobe cutting backdoor and Kobe dunked it. He threw a pass out of bounds. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He coughed up the dribble, dunk the other way. Nice extra pass to Bass under the hoop for the dunk. He attacked, spun to lose his man and was fouled at the rim, he made both FTs. He crashed the glass and put back in a missed Randle jumper. He had the crowd buzzing on a between-the-legs cross-over that he put a defender to the floor on, he then scored a layup. He attacked down the middle and hit the runner. He missed a drive but Randle crashed the glass and drew FTs. He missed a pull-up got it back and reset the offense. He attacked the paint and flipped in a layup to take the lead, Kobe talking to him intensely as he came back to the bench. He fumbled away a dribble and it led to a lob dunk the other way. He slithered his way through the D and was blocked at the rim but Bass cleaned it up. He sank the long wing pull-up jumper with 1:40 left. He attacked the paint and was hit on a layup with no call and missed, should have been FTs. He attacked and had the ball poked away from behind with 7 seconds left.

Williams -- -- He had to replace Russell in the final couple minutes. We went to him for a three in the final possession, but he couldn’t knock it down with the taller defender closing. He had made three three’s prior to that. Some nice drives by Lou in this game, flipping in layups over the bigs. Defensively, the starters had a ton of issues. Too slow, not covering for each other. It was a mess. This was the kind of game where Scott might rethink his starting lineups…but it ended in a way where he would probably rethink that, too. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-13 shooting (3-8 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 3 assists, 1 block and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He was blocked badly off the backboard. He took a handoff down the middle of the lane and scooped it in. He missed a wing three. He sank a corner three. He missed a three from the other corner. He sank a three, curling up top off a split play to take the handoff. He sank the fading baseline jumper next time down as he flared off the high screen. He missed a good look at a three straight away. He probed in early offense and drew FTs, making one. He had 11 points on 4-8 shooting in the half. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He set up Bass for FTs on the drive and dish. He attacked down the lane and flipped in the layup. He swished a wing three on a pitch out. He drew FTs way out on the perimeter on the dribble, he made both. He swished his baseline fade.

Hibbert -- -- He was looking old and slow to start the game. Cousins and the Kings were pushing the tempo and he couldn’t hang. Hibbert is only going to get older and slower. Cousins made him look ancient. Thankfully, foul trouble forced Scott’s hand and he couldn’t play Hibbert more in this game. He sat Hibbert 3 minutes into the second half when he picked up more fouls. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He missed a quick-fire face-up jumper for the Lakers first shot. Back in to cover Cousins and he picked up two quick fouls and had to sit again (for the best). Second Half: He picked up two quick fouls and sat again.

Nance -- -- How sweet would it have been if that was Nance in there instead of Bass making all those plays? You would have had the full future Laker lineup out there. Our starters had no defensive chemistry tonight. I’m not sure whether it was Kobe and Hibbert mucking things up, but they were awful. Efficient game from Jr. with 9 points on 5 shots. He did get blocked on a throwdown attempt. Mitch had some good comments about Larry prior to the game. “Nobody can predict that a player drafted at that place in the draft is going to make an impact this quickly,” Mitch said. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-5 shooting (3-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He sank an 18-footer on an inbounds pass for the Lakers firs score. He attacked and lost the handle. He missed a jumper on a kickout. He was knocked hard by Cousins for FTs, he made both. He was blocked trying to throwdown. Second Half: He took an inbounds under the hoop and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He curled into the lane off the triangle screen from the weakside and scored the layup.

Randle -- -- “We locked in on what we were supposed to be doing and got stops,” Randle said of the comeback. Good effort from him on that end of the court. He and Bass were battling hard. On the other end, Randle looked very much like a rookie. He had some costly out-of-control turnovers and poor decisions. It’s his first season and that’s going to happen. His energy helped pick up the intensity. We just need to control that. He got his points on FTs and a single jumper. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 1-4 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 5 turnovers and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He missed a 20-footer straight away. He iso’d, tried to bully his way to the rim and was stripped. He charged trying to get around a PG off the dribble in the post (back him down, draw the help defenders). He was fouled on a drive and made both FTs. Second Half: He stepped into an open 17-footer and knocked it down. He attacked and was stripped at the rim. He missed a step-back 18-footer. He missed a pull-up at the shotclock buzzer. He pushed it out OC and threw it away (Lakers could have cut it to 2 or 1), ouch. He battled on the offensive glass and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked with 1:10 left and was called for a charge over Cousins with 1 minute left.

Russell -- -- “Y’all ain’t seen nothing yet,” Russell said. “That’s all I’m going to say. Like I said they got lucky, but the world hasn’t seen anything yet.” That’s your 19-year-old rookie scoring 27 points off the bench, turning in a +28 and leading the team out of a 25-point hole to take a lead. He couldn’t finish the game with a moderate ankle sprain as he scored over Cousins before going down. He tried to play through that but couldn’t run on it. Sooo bummed he couldn’t be in there to close the last couple of minutes. He was coming up with big threes, pull-up jumpers and finishes at the rim. He said he thought he would have “hit some BS shot” to take the game because he was hot. He said he tried to lead vocally, but ended up leading by example. The kid is growing by the month. “I thought he was mediocre at best in summer league,” Mitch said prior to this one, mentioning Russell hadn’t played games for a while and wasn’t in great shape. He said it’s night and day since then. “I think he has a very bright future.” He started the season better, but still not used to the pace and how to get his spots. Over the weeks, he started finding those spots…the midrange pull-ups, not rushing the threes, then able to get to the rim. He put that all together in this one and made it look smooth. One of the best games from a rookie this year, considering the direct positive impact he had on nearly pulling this game out of the garbage with the comeback. He also did it under the weather. “Tonight he put his scorer’s hat on and put out a valiant effort,” Lou said. Russell will be out for the next game, I’m sure. Hopefully, it’s not going to sideline him too long. “It’s cool. It’s just a sprain,” Russell said. It might set him back a little until he recovers. He said he didn’t haven’t a clue how long he’ll be out for. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 11-16 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a +28. The Action: He was blocked going backdoor on his man and trying to reverse (didn’t look like he had full control of the pass). He hustled as Cousins went to pick up a loose ball, then Russell picked his pocket to take it for the uncontested layup. He missed a wing three. He scooped up a loose ball and took it the distance for the layup. He sank a pull-up at the elbow. His cross-court pass was picked off for a dunk. Nice cut on the Kobe drive and Kobe found him for the layup. Way short on a wide open wing three. He had 8 points on 4-7 shooting, 2 assists and 1 steal in 13 minutes. Second Half: He swished a sideline three in transition. Looked like he poked a ball loose on help (might have been a bad pass), he took the outlet and scored the uncontested layup. He hit Randle for the open jumper. He sank a measured three in early offense. Nice read to swipe a pass, but as he pushed it out, he dribbled it off a Kings foot and it went right to another one for a dunk. He missed an open wing three. He attacked the rim and drew FTs, he made one. He sank a long jumper in transition that looked like he might have had his foot on the three line in transition. Quick attack off the high screen and he hit the And-1 13-footer, he made the FT to cut it to 4. He missed a big three next time down. He drained a wing three in transition to cut it to 1. He threw a pass to Bass at midcourt, turnover, as Bass wasn’t fully across the line. He attacked the paint in early offense, took hard contact with no call and powered in the layup as he turned his ankle (should have been an And-1)…he hit the floor behind the basket and didn’t get up.

Bass -- -- Dude was balling tonight. The 5 steals…just impressive. Got to love having him in the foxhole, undersized, going up against Cousins down the stretch and just being scrappy. Big play after big play. They wouldn’t have turned this into a game without that effort from him. He steadied that young lineup and battled. Anytime they needed a big play, he seemed to come up with it. I’m not sure what his future is with this team. “We have a couple of players that we think our value players,” Mitch said, talking about trade options before the game. Most likely that’s Bass and Young he’s talking about, both have short-term, low contracts (could also be Kelly/Sacre, I suppose). But with Nance, Randle, Bass, Kelly, even Black and Metta, the Lakers have a lot of bodies they can throw at PF. They’ve got Hibbert, Black and Sacre at the C spot, also. I supposed if you want to see your young guys developed more, I could see Mitch moving Bass somewhere, but playing shoulder to shoulder with him showing guys how to set picks, finish, box out…there’s a lot they can use to help the youth develop just by playing with him. Mitch said he made a bunch of phone calls a couple of weeks ago (didn’t elaborate beyond that), so who knows what he’s looking at. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-3 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He slapped a ball loose and it led to a breakaway score. He attacked down the lane and drew FTs, he made both. Second Half: He missed an easy And-1 layup, but made both FTs. He spun to the middle and powered in a layup. He rejected a man in the middle of the lane. He dunked off the interior feed from Clarkson. He swatted a lob pass. Sensational defensive play stripping the ball away from Cousins as he was about to rise up for a score, then chasing it down and controlling it. He swiped another pass fronting Cousins. Great job crashing the glass off the drive by JC and he scored the putback.

Brown -- -- “They put their big boy pants on tonight,” Lou said. It was Brown, Randle, Clarkson and Russell playing with Bass down the stretch. On that last play of the game, I might have sat Brown for Kobe and used Kobe as a decoy or let him do what he does. Brown took Nick’s minutes from the rotation. It’s not Kobe taking away minutes from our young guys, it’s more Nick Young. Brown can get minutes if Scott goes to this rotation more. He needs to step up more offensively. His one catch and shoot three, looked like Peja in that game 7 OT…nowhere close to the rim. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He was called for a travel as he took a pass cutting baseline. Second Half: He took a kickout and missed the three, way off the mark.

Scott -- -- Mitch on the GM/coach relationship with Scott. “I’ll run some ideas past him. He’ll run some ideas past me,” Mitch said, saying they talk every day. “He can tell when I send a message.”… The Lakers fell behind by 12 after 3 minutes as the Kings pushed the tempo, and both Roy and Kobe didn’t quite look up to it… Down 19-4 after just 4 minutes when Scott called a timeout. Giving up 19 points in 4 minutes to start the game is beyond ridiculous… A minute later, the Lakers had given up 25 when he sat Nance and Clarkson for Randle and Russell… Bass in Hibbert out. Lakers down 18… The Lakers trailed 32-16 when the timeout came with 2 minutes left… He sat Kobe for Brown… The Lakers trailed 38-21 after the first quarter… He started a Bass, Randle, Brown, Clarkson, Russell lineup… Kobe back in after 3 minutes for Brown, Lakers down 18… He sat Russell for Lou… The Lakers trailed 53-35 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Hibbert back in. No D with him, no D without him… Randle out, Nance in… Hibbert picked up fouls quickly and sat for Bass… They trailed 69-48 at the half… Hibbert out with fouls quickly… Down 90-65, he brought in Russell for Clarkson… Russell helped spark a mini-run that forced a timeout, Lakers down 90-72… Randle in for Nance… The Lakers trailed 102-86 heading into the fourth… He started a Bass, Randle, Brown, Clarkson, Russell lineup… They cut it to 11. The Kings brought back in Cousins with his 5 fouls, need to attack that… The Kings called timeout when the Lakers cut it to 9… They cut it to 4 off Russell and Clarkson. Defensive intensity picked up as they rallied offensively… Behind a Russell three and Clarkson drive, they took a 1 points lead with 3:48 left… Both Clarkson and Russell also showing their youth with back-to-back costly turnovers… Russell with a huge drive and score, twisting his ankle and hitting the floor (Lakers had to take a foul and timeout)… Russell out with an ankle sprain, Williams in with under 2 minutes left, score tied… Turnovers by Randle and Clarkson in the final minute… The Lakers trailed by 3 with 6.8 seconds left. Should get the ball to Lou as Karl may foul in this situation and Lou is brilliant at getting a three up in those situations… Might also bring in Kobe for Brown, who looked scared on his only shot. They got the ball to Lou and he missed a three from the sideline… Both teams shot 55%...

Great to see the future on the court all at the same time spearheading the comeback.

I enjoyed the game but the broadcasting really cut into that enjoyment. Can we petition for Reggie to never call another Lakers game ever?

Nance less athletic (ie: lighter skinned) than Russell and Randle?

Blasting the young guys' defensive effort while the vets are getting lit up at that end?

To his credit, he did correctly point out Lou's mistake in crunch time in going under the screen on Rondo. But otherwise he was a disaster. His research for the game seemed to consist of calling Byron for some soundbites and then making stuff up on the fly.

I can understand that Reggie wants to defend his former teammate (Scott), and fellow future hall of famer Kobe, but it has bothered me that he has used that to take shots at the Lakers youth several times this season.

Completely agree w you DB, i see Bass + Young traded by ASG to contenders for 2nd rd picks or the Mitchell Special, underachieving young player buried in someone's dog house (see Ariza, Shannon).

What's nice is that he had a very varied attack tonight. He got some steals and got some nice layups in transition. Was also hitting threes (some in transition, as well), getting to the rack, getting to the line, hitting some mid-range shots and distributing a little bit. To be honest, there were a couple open threes that I was shocked that he missed tonight.

Thanks, DB!

Lakers reverting to bad old habits – when starters dig a hole too deep for the bench to bail them out.

Great growth game for the Lakers youth.
But starters and the beginning of the game

I'm done with Hibbert. Start Black instead.

Thanks DB. As awful as this team has been these last 2 years, and as old and injured as it was before that, it's great to see a bunch of 19, 20, 22 year old players storm back on a team from down 27 to take a lead, led by a 19 year old playmaker and floor general.

Never has a loss felt more like a win than this one.

I don't think there will be any trade during the season.

Although there would be takers for Bass, I think Mitch will demand more for him than he can get. Same for Lou.

Young could be available (maybe packaged with Kelly/Sacre), but I don't think many want him.

Moreover, if you trade Young, then when Kobe rests his shoulder in home games and you have an injury to any of our young guards (Clarkson had a minor ankle issue, now Russ has one) – suddenly you are out of options.

As The Who shared in a song, The Kids are Allright

The young players are learning and presently able to compete with the lower rung teams like the Kings/76ers/etc.. Hopefully, they will learn from their youthful mistakes and carelessness while placing a much greater value on each possession - especially during crunch time.

Hopefully soon they will be able to compete (not necessarily win) against the elite teams like the Spurs, Warriors, OKC and the Cavs with the addition of key acquisitions - whether it is through trades or FAs.

Damn I wish we won that. Kobe kept this game from being an absolute disaster and the young guys took over in the 3rd. I hadn't seen Kobe this agressive going to the basket in years. D'Angelo and Clarkson were great they just made some rookie mistakes at the end.

Bass deserves a ton of credit too. He came into the 3rd with a lot of energy on both ends. Good game to watch overall. Maybe we win it if Russell doesn't hurt his ankle.

The game was also broadcast on TNT, with Reggie on-hand.

I don't know about anyone else here but if I were the lakers, I would build around Russell, Clarkson and Nance.

I am not sold on Randle but these other three are exciting to watch.

Thanks DB. We managed a couple game look-ins and were shocked to see Hibbs had fouled out so quickly. Jeez, a rim-and-post defender who couldn't run or defend the post. Thanks for filling in the blanks as to why.

the youngsters need a real coach. everybody can see the talents are there. Get a coach like Steve Kerr, Luke Walton to teach them how to play together both offensively and defensively...With a couple years gelling together, they will flourish... Russell, JC, Randle could be good to great play makers, AB and Jr. are solid 3 and D guys, this group of youngsters should play fast tempo small ball... well if they can up their defense to a certain level...
