Fading In The Fourth… The Lakers have shown a little more fight in them lately, but tonight there was a lot of swinging and missing as they fell to the Kings 112-93.

The Lakers didn’t really show up for this game until the second quarter. By then, they were already down by 14 points. They trimmed that lead down to 5 by halftime behind Kobe and Russell.

Behind some spirited play of Brandon Bass and some moments from Russell, they were right there again in the fourth quarter, down just 4.

Back-to-back turnovers by Clarkson and just like that the game slipped from their grasp.

“To me the biggest key is you’ve got to get off to a good start,” Scott said.

The Lakers were 4-25 from three. They were missing some wide open ones, too.

“I was just one of those nights. It wasn’t falling. It certainly wasn’t falling for me,” said Ryan Kelly, who went 0-3 from beyond the arc.

Kobe -- -- Sleepy start from Kobe. He was neither scoring nor attacking to setup others in his first stint. He warmed up in the second quarter, getting more aggressive with the shot and playmaking. He ended up leading the Lakers with 13 points in the half after that second quarter. He’d only score 2 points in the second half. The Lakers certainly missed someone who could step up, put the team on their shoulders and carry them. “That Mamba look, I don’t think I’ve seen that one time this season,” Stu said during the game. He’s had some Mamba moments, but certainly not that intensity we’re used to. We’re not playing for much of anything this season and he’s plenty content to let the young guys find their own inner Mamba. They had some moments last time we faced the Kings, but not tonight. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-13 (2-7 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He swished a corner step-back jumper over Cousins on a switch. He missed a hook across the lane. Extra pass to Russell on the wing for the three. He drew an illegal D and made the tech. He inbounded to Russell who went right back to him for a layup. He stripped Cousins on a double team. He fumbled a dribble out of bounds. He rattled in a wing three in transition next time down. He barely hit rim on a step-back three. He inbounded to Randle, took the handoff and drained the sideline three. He missed the heat-check three next time down. He up-faked with the shotclock low and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a long wing jumper, short. He threw a pass away trying to thread the needle. He missed a three, we got it back to him cutting and he missed the layup wanting the foul (looked like an easy call). He had 13 points on 4-10 shooting. Second Half: He attacked and was fouled on the Rondo-like scoop layup attempt, he made both FTs. He missed a layup. He bounced a pass behind his back to Bass in transition for a dunk. He iso’d and missed an awkward turnaround getting all kinds of contact on the arms with no call. Way short on an open three.

Clarkson -- -- Just one brief section where he played well. He showed up to start the second half with a series of scores, including an impressive breakaway dunk over McLemore. In the fourth, he was a bit of a rally killer with back-to-back turnovers and some misses in the middle of the quarter. That kind of sealed the Lakers fate. Scott referred to a couple of key turnovers in the game, I think it was those two from Clarkson. Just a poor stretch of ball there when we were knocking on the door and that door was slammed shut quickly. A couple nice moments showing chemistry with Russell by cutting off ball. Good to see more of that between those two. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-15 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He should have gone glass on a 5-footer and missed. He missed a baseline pull-up jumper. He was stripped out of bounds on a drive. He missed a corner three. He sank a pull-up jumper working off the screen on the left wing. He missed a corner three. He scooped up a loose ball and was fouled on the floater, he made both FTs. Just 4 points on 1-5 shooting. Second Half: He pushed out the break, elevated, extended and dunked over McLemore (who gave him some props on the next deadball). He fumbled a pass, got it back, wheeled around the lane and hit the floater. He sank the pull-up wing jumper. He missed a leaning layup attempt off a dribble probe. He scored a layup cutting weakside while Russell attacked strongside and found him. He probed and threw it away. He traveled next time down. He missed a runner across the lane. He was blocked on a floater. He missed a floater, short. He attacked and drew FTs, missing both. He was blocked trying to throwdown and showing the ball. He missed a pull-up jumper. He drew FTs and made both.

Williams -- -- The team was a -10 when he was on the court in the first half. None of our guards was able to sustain their game offensively in this one. It seems liked spurts from Russell, Clarkson, Kobe, sprinkled with a few moments from Lou out there. No one could get on track. Lou shot blanks from three, contributing to our issues from there. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-10 shooting (0-4 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 foulsl in 33 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He attacked off the high screen and hit the floater. He hit a pull-up at the elbow working off the screen again. He couldn’t finish a layup off a hesitation move. He took a handoff and missed the three straight away. The Kings gambled the passing lanes, missed, Lou attacked and scored the And-1 at the rim, he made the FT. He missed the corner three, we got it back to him and he drew FTs on a reach, he made both. Second Half: He missed a sideline three. He drew McLemore’s fourth foul and FTs he made one. He iso’d on Gay, got him to bite on a pumpfake and drew three FTs, he made all three. He missed a fading baseline jumper. He popped open off the pindown, measured and missed the three. He worked the two-man game with Bass and hit him for the dunk. He attacked and scored a layup.

Hibbert -- -- Cousins was plugging the lane and leaving Hibbert open for jumpers, so Roy knocked some down in this one. We still went with the much more active Bass for most of the minutes at the C spot. Hibbert was in quick foul trouble, so he spent most of the night on the bench. Good job with the steals, but he still struggled with getting off the floor for boards. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 2 boards, 3 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He took a deflected pass and hit the baseline jumper. He knocked down a jumper on a kickout from the other side. He got tapped on another baseline jumper. Good challenge on a Cousins drive to get a stop. He gave up an offensive board and score. He drained the FT jumper off the two-man game. Dumb foul on the offensive glass on a FT to give up FTs the other way. Second Half: He missed a baseline jumper creating against the shotclock. Illegal screen for his fourth foul a minute in.

Randle -- -- He struggled to finish around the rim in this game. “Tonight, he just couldn’t finish in the paint,” Scott said. That killed his double-double chances in the second half. He was blocked a number of times and can’t power up and finish like Bass. Good job on the boards again, but he really wasn’t much of an impact in this one. Laker PF spot combined for just 8 points tonight. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-11 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 12 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He missed a three in early offense, way short. He was blocked on the layup attempt. He missed a short one after taking contact, got it back and missed the easier one. No box out and he gave up a missed FT rebound. He decided to pull it out instead of attacking strong, they poked it loose from him, breakaway the other way. Back in and he gave up an offensive board and score. Nice shovel pass to Bass for a dunk when Randle’s man tried to flop. He dunked off the drive and dish from Bass. He powered up for a layup off the interior feed from Bass next time down. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made one. Halfway to the double-double with 5 points and 5 boards. Second Half: He iso’d, spun and blew a layup, got it back and missed again. He couldn’t finish a jumphook across the lane. He was blocked, tracked it down, attacked and bowled over Cousins in the circle for FTs, he made one. He was blocked from behind for a jumpball.

Russell -- -- Last time these two teams faced, Russell went off in the game until spraining his ankle in the final minutes. He’s still been recovering from that, I’m sure, but he was active and attacking with speed. He led the Lakers with 5 assists and had a couple of spurts where he helped the rally the team, but his shot was not falling. When that’s happening, I’d like to at least see some better effort on the glass. We haven’t seen that for a while. Some nice moments by Russell breaking down the D off the dribble. That’s been a big improvement as the season has gone a long (a lot of that is also him being able to work with a guy like Bass). Speaking of chemistry, it would have been interesting if Kobe was 10 years younger. Those two seem to have a lot of chemistry when on the floor. They both move well off ball and both know how to pass. Not a ton of minutes together on the floor tonight, but they definitely play well together. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-15 shooting (2-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Sweet bounce pass on the break through traffic to Kelly for the dunk. He attacked from the corner and lost control, missing the reverse. He got his man on his hip, drew contact and FTs on the jumper, he made both. He missed a sideline three on a transition kickout. He was rejected out of bounds on a drive. He missed a baseline jumper on the subsequent inbounds. He airballed a long pull-up jumper against the shotclock after the play busted. He set up Bass on the screen-roll for FTs. He curled around the top of the lane and scored a layup to his left. He drained the wing three off the swing pass from Kobe. He took an inbounds, drew Kobe’s man and fed Kobe for the layup. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He had 7 points on 2-8 shooting and 3 assists. Second Half: He missed a baseline jumper. Way short on a floater in the lane. He hit the easy floater down the middle of the lane (wide open, have to finish that one). He got a big on his heels on a drive, knocked him backwards and scored the layup. He sank a three behind the Bass screen. He threw a pass away expecting a cut that went the other way. Next time down he hit Clarkson cutting backdoor for the reverse. He missed a rushed three trying to beat the shotclock. He broke down the D off the dribble and dumped it to Bass for the And-1 dunk. He missed a wing three, short.

Bass -- -- Player of the game for the Lakers in this one. He had six dunks in the game (Lakers Youth Foundation was donating $1,000 per Laker dunk in this one to the Make-a-Wish Foundation…so he cleaned up for them). Good job by the Lakers setting him up (again, he sets great screens and that helps), but he knows how to finish around the rim. He gave the Lakers their only spark on D in the fourth quarter with some blocks. That helped the Lakers start a rally. They just couldn’t sustain it as turnovers and sloppy ball from others caught up with them. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-12 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He swished a wing jumper off a dribble. He airballed on a post-up spin in the paint. He took the pass from Russell off the screen-roll and drew FTs, he made both. He dunked off the shovel pass from Randle in transition. His man gambled and lost, Bass attacked the paint and fed Randle for the dunk. Another interior feed to Randle for a layup after working the two-man game on the wing with Kobe next time down. Second Half: He couldn’t power up on a couple attempts under the hoop, rare misses from there. He dribbled around Cousins and missed a layup. He dunked off the behind-the-back pass from Kobe. He was stripped from behind. He up-faked, spun and And-1 slammed with both hands, he made the FT. He dunked off the interior feed sequence going from Bass to Kelly back to Bass. He dunked off the two-man sequence with Lou. Great help D rotation at the rim to swat the finish. Great job again blocking a drive to help out on dribble penetration. He was blocked from behind on a dunk attempt. Russell broke down the D and fed him under the hoop for the And-1 dunk, he made the FT.

Brown -- -- Only 5 minutes in the first half, but he was a -8. He had no stats during that stretch except for 2 fouls. No boards, shots, anything. Those are the kind of invisible stretches he needs to avoid. He scored his only FG on a drive from the corner for a layup. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He mistimed a jump and lost a defensive board out of bounds. Second Half: He missed a corner three on a kickout. He missed an open wing three. He attacked off the three line from the corner and scored the layup with his left. He probed off the three line and drew FTs on the layup attempt, he made one. Way off on a three from the top of the arc.

Kelly -- -- A lot of minutes with so little impact. Few boards or points. Just no impact on the game. At the very least, hit your open threes. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a flat three from the wing in transition. Great job running the floor with speed to help create a slight passing lane and Russell found him for the dunk. He gave up an And-1 dunk to Rondo, at least he got his money’s worth on the foul as Rondo went down hard. He missed an open three off the double-high screen play. Second Half: He missed a layup on a quick cut. Nice interior feed sequence to Bass for a dunk. He missed a wing three, got to knock those down.

Huertas -- -- Garbage time for a couple of minutes where he had a turnover. The Stats: He had 1 turnover in 2 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He had his pass easily deflected trying to go cross court, turnover.

Sacre -- -- He came in with 2 minutes left forcing me to add him here. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score and had 1 board in 2 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Scott -- -- Poor start from Randle on both ends. Kobe invisible in the first few minutes. The Lakers trailed 14-10 when the timeout came… He sat Clarkson for Russell out of that. Kelly in for Randle… Brown and Bass in for Kobe and Hibbert, Lakers down 4… Timeout a minute later down 9 against the much bigger Kings lineup… The Lakers trailed 28-18 after a sleepy first quarter… He started a Bass, Kelly, Brown, Clarkson, Russell lineup… Kobe in for Brown, Lakers down 12… Randle in for Kelly… They cut the lead in half behind a couple Russell scores and a Bass dunk, forcing a timeout… Lakers down 6 when he sat Bass for Hibbert… Lakers down 5 when Russell sat for Lou… Sloppy, foul-prone close to the half by the Lakers… Kobe leading the team in minutes with 19 in the half. Scott will probably reel that in later… They trailed 57-52 at the half. The Kings shot 51% with 34 points in the paint. Just 3 turnovers for the Lakers in the half… Lakers wanted to limit the dribble penetration of the Kings… Ridiculous first set to start the half as we had to fire a bad shot off against the shotclock on a poorly spaced play… Bass in for Hibbert early on when he had 4 fouls… Lakers got the Kings into the penalty after 4 minutes… The Lakers could have tied it up, then suddenly trailed by 10 a few possessions later after a 9-1 Kings run. Timeout Scott… Down 7 when Russell came in for Clarkson… Brown in for Kobe down 10. A couple more Kings threes and the Lakers trailed by 16 with 3:37 left in the quarter… Kelly in for Randle… Good close to the quarter with Russell scoring a couple times and Bass with a dunk… The Lakers trailed 86-77 heading into the fourth… He started the Bass, Kelly, Brown, Williams, Russell lineup… Clarkson in for Lou… They cut it to 7 and the Kings called a timeout with 9:40 left… They trimmed it to 4 off some Russell passing… Turnovers by Clarkson and the Lakers trailed by 9 when Kobe returned for Brown… He called a timeout down 13 a few seconds later… He brought in Lou for Russell with 5 minutes left… Why is Kobe still in down 17 with a few minutes left?... And the deep bench with 2 minutes left…

Yea, 4th blowout loss in a row. I still watch full live games when I can... but when I miss them I just watch highlights nowadays rather than the entire game Felt like this for most of last season too until Clarkson started shining. At least recently there's been times where all the young guys are on the floor together and gelling.

Worst of times for me was having Dwight vs. the Spurs in the playoffs after Kobe's Achilles injury. IIRC, we started Goudelock & Morris, who I don't think are even in the league anymore. I think game 3 or 4 of that series was the first time ever I didn't even bother to watch a Laker playoff game - just logged on later in the evening to confirm the loss

Thanks DB. Frustrating game. No idea what's driving Scott's rotations and whether it's anything basketball related.

I'd like to see a lot more DLO/Clarkson out there, and it seems Kobe and DLO are both at their best when they play together as well.

I hope Nance is healed and ready to go soon. Man does this team miss him.

What different schemes or other suggestions would make this team play better

In the first half of the game, the Lakers just were getting out hustled down the court numerous times resulting in easy layups.

Guess we are going to have to suffer with Randle getting stuffed on the offensive end because everyone knows what he is going to do and he has not been changing.

I love the fact that Bass tries to dunk every time he's close to the basket. He plays like a man in there.

Maybe bring back the Catalyst (no, not Huertas) to the starting lineup to get everyone set up?

I think that Black should has seen some minutes against the really big frontcourt of the Kings. Kelly and Bass were both getting abused out there.

Like that is ever going to happen while Scott is at the wheel.

For starters, ditch the Princeton sets for a modern offense. Just look at the first play of the game. They bled 18 seconds off the shot clock with the Princeton and ended up with a Clarkson iso which missed.

Then they started to run PnRs with the defense set up and staying on one side of the floor.

When that didn't work, they started to run Floppy's which are just as stagnant (it's freaking easy to defend plays where only 2 guys are moving).

You get the picture. Basically they've learned nothing from the successful teams of the past five years.

If there was one set of schemes they would run well.....

I don't think they can run any schemes properly.

They run them properly for the most part. They're just bad schemes.

All that matters is that Kobe is happy.
