Lottery Team vs. Contender… The 108-95 loss to the Spurs was inevitable. It was just a matter of when the game would be out of reach.

The Lakers nearly lost touch with the Spurs in the second quarter. Kobe had just missed a three that could have cut the lead to 2. The Spurs went on a run and quickly got separation with a comfortable 13-point halftime lead. L.A. battled back in the third, again with a chance to cut it to 3 on an open three for Lou. He couldn’t connect and once again the Spurs stretched out the lead to 16 heading into the fourth.

The Lakers quickly lost the first few minutes of the quarter and this one was finally over for good. The Spurs ball movement easily trumping the Lakers iso-then-pass-for-another-iso offense.

Blocked shots and turnovers were rapidly turned into points the other way for the Spurs. If Pop wanted a teaching tape of what not to do in an offensive system, you’d just look at the Lakers tonight.

“Nobody played great. We played arguably the best team in the NBA tonight,” Scott said.

The entire Laker team played a very average game. It takes some heroics to compete this year, and the prime Kobe who was carrying those Smush, Kwame, Walton teams isn’t walking through the doors.

Kobe -- -- Ten years ago today, Kobe dropped 81. Where were you? I was right here pounding away at the keyboard, probably about an hour behind on the DVR. The phone started ringing off the hook. Of course, I ignored it. Mrs. DB picked up the calls and screened them for me. That was a surreal night. I remember her purposely messing with me to do something and I was like, umm, Kobe’s having a pretty good game here. So long ago. “It’s strange because it feels like it was yesterday,” Kobe said. “Ten years went by in a hurry.” All starters tonight scored in double digits, except for Kobe. He led the team in assists. Slow start tonight with 1-7 from the floor in the first half. Pretty much a non-factor then. In the second half, he moved the ball a little more and set up teammates better. He seemed to search out Lou a number of times. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-9 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 6 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He hit Hibbert on the two-man game for the jumper. He blocked Duncan. Same play with Hibbert for another jumper. He attacked to his left and missed the drive. He got tapped on a wing three. He was blocked in a crowd. He missed the 18-footer over a smaller man. He worked off the high screen and hit the step-back in the lane. He hit the side of the backboard on a double-clutch baseline jumper. High-risk, low-return pass on the perimeter that was picked off. He missed a wing three. He had 2 points on 1-7 shooting and 2 assists. Second Half: He swung it to Lou for the open corner three. He attacked and kicked to Lou wide open at the FT line for the easy jumper. He tried to thread a baseline pass to Lou and it was easily picked off. He worked the two-man game to Hibbert for a jumper. He tried to go behind his back on that sequence again and it was picked off for points the other way. He drained the corner three on the inbounds sequence. He missed a corner three.

Clarkson -- -- Sort of an average game for Clarkson, hitting from the perimeter and getting into the paint for floaters and scores at the rim. A bit too iso for my taste, but that’s the nature of how we play. One guy iso’s passes it off to another and he iso’s. Or we run set plays that get nowhere and we have to iso against the shotclock. If Pop were coaching, I have no doubt he would have called timeout a few times to teach Clarkson and make sure he’s developing good habits. Clarkson said they could learn from the Spurs on how to move the ball. Asked how well his two guards played together, Scott said, “I think they are both still trying to figure it out.” The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-12 shooting (2-3 for three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He was tied up in transition trying to split defenders, jumpball. He took Parker into the post and drew FTs on the turnaround, he made both. He missed an FT pull-up. He sank a three off the Russell kickout. He returned the favor to Russell who hit the three. He created down the middle of the lane and hit the floater. He took a sideline inbounds against the shotclock and drained the tough three just before the shotclock expired. He missed a floater in the lane. He tried to go coast to coast at the end of the half and was blocked. He had 10 points on 3-7 shooting. Second Half: He missed a three. He swished an open baseline jumper off the inbounds. He grabbed a missed FT rebound, pushed it out and through some flatfooted Spur defense and scored a layup (that forced a timeout from Pop off the ridiculous moment of D by the Spurs). He was stripped on an iso drive. He swished a baseline jumper off a pull-back dribble.

Williams -- -- Man, some of the passing sequences between Lou and Hibbert were just awkward. I know Russell will benefit from a more mobile/athletic bigman. Lou would, as well. Like Clarkson, an average game from Lou. Unlike JC, Lou looked to pass more but had as many turnovers as assists. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-12 shooting (1-4 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He probed to his left and swished the short fade. He drew FTs baiting a man on the perimeter and chucking, he made one. He attacked and kicked to Russell who hit a jumper. He swished the sideline fade. He set up Bass for the layup on a drive and dish. He was blocked out of bounds on a baseline attempt. He missed a baseline floater. He attacked baseline and threw it away, points the other way. He led the Lakers with 3 assists. Second Half: His interior feed to Hibbert was picked off (if Hibbert was athletic, he might have gone for a lob instead). He swished the corner three off the swing pass from Kobe. He missed an 18-footer. Kobe found him wide open for a FT jumper, which he easily drained. He drew the contact and chucked the three up there to draw FTs, he made two. He missed an open three in early offense. He drew another perimeter whistle and chucked to draw FTs, he made both. He overpassed instead of taking the wide open three. He scooped up a loose ball and scored a layup. He missed a fading wing three at the end of the quarter. He missed a couple more threes.

Hibbert -- -- This was a little more of the Hibbert I was hoping we’d see offensively this season. He and Kobe teamed up for a couple of pick and pops early on, Roy showing that range. He also worked the post for a couple of hoops, as well. Nothing crazy, but a threat and able to be a little productive. At times he looked older than Duncan with how he moved out there. At other times (the spin move for the dunk), he showed he isn’t that ancient. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-9 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He sank an elbow jumper off the two-man game with Kobe. Same play in the same spot and he knocked down another one off the Kobe pass. He missed a hook on iso. Not close on an open baseline jumper. He missed an open FT jumper. Low position and he hit the short hook in early offense. Second Half: He spun on Duncan in the post and slammed (Duncan nailed to the ground on that, wow). He sank a 17-footer off the two-man game with Kobe. He missed a short one, but Randle cleaned it up.

Randle -- -- He was cleaning the glass early, getting 9 boards by halftime. Good effort always in that part of his game. He finished with the double-double. Again, some of the same mistakes from Randle offensively. His lack of confidence in his jumper sometimes becoming a wrench in our offense. But I thought he had moments out there where he was a little more methodical, a little more controlled in what he was doing. That’s a little bit of growth. He’s a double-double with starter minutes. We just need him to be a little more efficient and effective offensively. Hopefully, this time next year, we see more of that. Defensively, he helped keep the Spurs second-chance opportunities limited. (We won the offensive glass 12-7). The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-14 shooting to go with 14 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He swished a face-up 12-footer. He scooped up a bad pass, attacked to his left and hit the one-hander under control. He missed a step-back at the FT line. He forced it in traffic and was blocked easily. He swished a 17-footer on the catch and shoot. He missed the step-back fade (should have moved the ball when he got it). He iso’d, missed the drive and pushed off to erase his tip in. He had 6 points on 3-8 shooting and 9 boards. Second Half: He missed an awkward shot across the lane. He passed up the open jumper to attack a crowd and got blocked out of bounds. He couldn’t finish a layup down the middle of the lane. He dunked in a Hibbert miss. Wow, looked like he drew a good charge in transition D on Kawhi, but the ref called block. He somehow came up with a missed shot in a crowd, gathered it and scored a layup between defenders. He took the long outlet and dunked on the final possession.

Russell -- -- In the fourth when Tarik came in, they ran a sequence with Brown setting a quick screen on Russell’s man, then Black coming over to run the two-man game. That resulted in a dunk for Tarik and several scores for Russell. Good to see some reps on the sideline screen-roll with those two. Granted it was in garbage time, but teaming Russell up with a mobile bigman like that is what the Lakers need to think about in the future. Some sloppy passing in this one before that. He got caught leaving his feet or making a move on a drive that didn’t fool anyone and then threw it away. Those were quickly converted for points the other way. “Too many turnovers,” Russell said of his game, saying the coach will lose confidence in him if he does that. He ended up leading the Lakers in scoring with that aggressive fourth quarter. Asked what Russell could learn from Manu (one of Russell’s idols), Kobe said maybe on how he uses his size and the creative ways he gets to his left. “He was one of my favorite players growing up…I used to always say Manu Ginobli, Brandon Roy, players like that,” Russell said. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-10 shooting (2-2 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He hit Randle for the open 17-footer. He missed a pull-up jumper short. He kicked out to Clarkson for the open three. Clarkson found Russell for the three on the next trip down. He missed a step-back wing jumper. He posted up the smaller Mills and drew FTs, he missed both. He setup Kelly for FTs under the hoop. He lost his man on the up-fake, moved in a dribble and knocked down the wing jumper. His pass to Randle after drawing a double was picked off. He had 5 points on 2-4 shooting and 2 assists. Second Half: He got caught in the air and threw it away, layup the other way. He probed and got caught again with nowhere to pass, turnover, points the other way. He attacked strong to his left and scored a layup. Same sequence again and this time Russell pulled up at the elbow for the open jumper. He swished a three next time down as Tarik came over to set a screen. He worked it again, no screen this time and he hit the pull-up jumper. He swished a floater on a hesitation move. He attacked off the high screen from Tarik and hit the leaner.

Bass -- -- Kind of a quiet game from Bass considering how well he’s played of late. He had his moments defensively with 3 blocks. Scoring-wise we seemed to want him to post up or iso a lot more in this game. Last one, it was guys setting him up for scores. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-4 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 3 blocks and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He rejected a man badly and controlled it. He bobbled a pass, controlled it and scored the layup. He was blocked/stripped on a dunk attempt. Second Half: He drew FTs in the post out of a timeout, he made both. He missed a drive. He was blocked on an up-and-under. He blocked a shot. He tried to bully his way through defenders in the post and drew FTs, he made one.

Brown -- -- He got to cover Manu for stretches. Manu went 9-10 for 20 points. School was in session. Offensively, Brown had a drive for a score. That was it. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting (0-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He attacked off the three line and banked in the runner, good job using the glass. He was blocked on a pull-up, slow to get the shot up. He airballed a three, he got it back and didn’t hit iron on the drive. Second Half: He missed a three. He missed a three on iso. He stripped a ball off his man.

Kelly -- -- He went into the locker room late in the game. I think they said he got a tooth knocked back. Ouch. He had some moments offensively. At least he was more of threat to score in this one. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-5 shooting (3-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He fell to the ground and lost the ball out of bounds on a post move. Russell found him under the hoop and he drew FTs, he made both. He banked in an And-1 jumper, he made the FT. Second Half: He pulled an offensive board away from a smaller man and scored the layup. He missed a face-up wing jumper. He missed a runner.

Black -- -- He came in with 7 minutes left for garbage time. Probably the only interesting minutes of this game, to be honest. The Lakers were a +12 in this stretch as Russell got aggressive and Black was a screen setter. Fans want to see him more because of his mobility and ability to finish. Not sure what the plans are or if the Lakers can move some of their vet bigs. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 block and no fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Russell quickly worked a two-man sequence to Black for a dunk shortly after Tarik entered. He dunked when Huertas circled around the lane and then found him (lucky it wasn’t a three-second call). He airballed an up-and-under up against the shotclock. He blocked a shot and controlled it.

Huertas -- -- He came in for the final 5 minutes of garbage time. When we took the ball out of Russell’s hands we had a couple of shotclock violations. Huertas and Russell have little to no chemistry on the floor. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score to go with 1 board, 2 assists and no fouls in 5 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He circled around the lane and found Black for a dunk.

Scott -- -- The Lakers trailed 14-12 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Spurs starting to come to life the last few possessions… Russell in for Lou out of that timeout… They trailed by 9 shortly later and Scott called another timeout. A 14-2 run in this stretch… Bass, Kelly and Brown in out of that… The Lakers trailed 31-22 after the first… Same unit to start the second quarter before Clarkson sat for Williams… Kobe in for Brown, Lakers down 5… Randle in for Kelly, Lakers down 8… Hibbert in for Bass, Clarkson for Russell Lakers down 8… The Lakers could have cut it to 2 on a Kobe three, but he couldn’t knock it down. That led to a Spur run and the Lakers trailed by 13 when Scott called the timeout in the final minute… The Lakers trailed 56-43 at the half. The Lakers were blocked 10 times… Lakers down 9 when Russell came in for Clarkson… Bass in for Hibbert. Brown for Kobe… Manu on fire with 20 points on 9-10 shooting… The Lakers trailed 87-71 heading into the fourth… The Bass, Kelly, Brown, Williams, Russell lineup… Clarkson in for Lou… Awful out of a timeout. Our play again? Dump it to Bass to iso in the post. When that was denied it was every man for himself trying to create on iso until we heaved up a challenged three against the shotclock… Kelly out with an injury for Black… Russell/Black some good two-man sequences… Huertas and Randle in for Bass and Clarkson… Out of a timeout, a shotclock violation on the BS play. Another one next time down as we took the ball out of Russell’s hands two possession in a row despite Russell having several scores working the two-man game… Spurs had 13 blocks and 10 steals…

Lakers are not 2nd. They are last. Thank you, Scott, for ruining another season.

Thanks DB for helping us through this misery.

10 years ago, I considered quitting watching the game at halftime. I only decided to keep watching because I had some birthday cake from my 12th birthday the day before, and shortly into the third it turned into a ball game. Ha!

Didn't catch today's game. Thanks for the recap, DB!

I'm not sure why Huertas is playing at all. He's too old to be figuring into any of our future plans, and he's not good enough to win us games this season, so why take the ball out of Russell's hands?

School was in session

The teacher spanked the student

Pop probably would have called TOs when the team started could be what was needed

Zen Master probably would probably let them stay in the court with the hope that they will learn since many feel they need to be on the court and/or they feel entitled to start/have major PT or that they will be embarrassed by the type of blowout losses

Hopefully the rookies will learn the lessons given to them and they play with more decisiveness and always in attack mode to quickly learn what works and what doesn't

It's still a learning experience for him, but I really enjoy watching Brown on the defensive end. He works at it and has the tools. Very different than any other perimeter player on the roster.

Brown AND Nance work hard on defense and display a maturity that is not surprising since both of them played collegiate basketball for years
