Down to the Wire… After getting blown out again and again, it’s nice to see a close one for a change.

It was a little frustrating for the team, however, when the refs ended up a taking away what looked like an And-1 from Lou to take the lead in the final seconds. His arm was clearly grabbed by Barea, who then flopped to draw a whistle and erase a huge go-ahead basket.

“I don’t feel like getting fined tonight, so I guess I will just leave the referees alone,” Scott said of the play.

On the other end, Dirk Nowitzki drained the game winner with a couple seconds over Randle. Julius had a chance to knock down a game-winning three at the buzzer, but hit the back of the rim. It was dead straight, just too long, and the Lakers fell 92-90. Tough loss.

If you are looking for the silver lining in a close loss… with another win by Philly tonight, the Sixers are 4-6 in their last 10. The Lakers are 1-9 with now only 2 more wins than the Sixers. Rock bottom is within their grasp. Tank on.

Clarkson -- -- A much more well-rounded game from Clarkson as he led the team in points, assists and was up there on the boards. “We were just playing together, making shots,” Clarkson said afterward. He sat quite a bit in the fourth, but still finished with a team-high 37 minutes. This is more along the balance we saw from him last year. We looked for him to come up big on a couple possessions down the stretch, he made one, but missed a couple of others. That was kind of a quiet, steady 18 from Clarkson. On the last play, we were trying force Dirk to his right hand and Clarkson was supposed to come to double off the dribble. He couldn’t make it there in time. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-15 shooting (2-4 form three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 7 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a wing jumper. He attacked and kicked to Brown for three. He attacked the paint, hit the bottom of the rim, got it back and reversed. He sank an open three off an extra pass from Hibbert. Aggressive attack and he drew FTs at the rim, he made one. He missed a halfcourt heave at the buzzer. He missed a shot in the paint, followed it up for the offensive board and kicked out to Nick for three while still in air. He was slapped on the perimeter for FTs, he made both. He made a tech FT. Second Half: He swished a floater on a probe from the right wing. He was called for a double dribble on a baseline probe. He scooped up the blocked shot, attacked with speed and scored the breakway layup. He threw a pass away, got it back and missed a chuck from three to try to beat the shotclock. He sank a three off the kickout from Randle. He charged on the breakaway pass off. He grabbed an offensive board but missed the quick-fire jumper. He pushed it up court and back-rimmed the tough, twisting wing jumper at the buzzer. He sank a floater over Dirk on a drive. He missed a good look at a pull-up jumper from 16 feet out with a minute left. He missed a floater.

Williams -- -- First off, he got robbed on the drive in the final seconds. It looked like Barea grabbed Lou’s arm, pulled it into his body and flopped. On the replay, it was pretty clear. It should have been an And-1 and probably cost the Lakers the game if it’s a 3-point play (at the very least, OT). Lou was pissed and had some words for the refs after the play and after the final buzzer. How about the 3 blocks from Williams? Some better recoveries for sure after getting beat. You just don’t expect one of the smallest guys to lead that category for the team. (Lakers had 7 blocks to the Mavs 1.) When the Lakers were struggling to score in the second quarter, Lou was able to manufacture some points and keep them afloat. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-13 shooting (1-5 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 36 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He got tapped on a wing three. He missed a corner three. Great recovery after getting backdoored and he blocked the reverse. He missed an elbow fade. He made a tech FT. He missed a baseline floater. He suckered Dirk into a foul at the three line for a couple FTs, he made both. He attacked the paint, drew the D and fed Bass for FTs. He swished the open corner three off the swing pass from Nick. He jumped a passing lane to swipe the ball and took it the distance for the layup. He suckered the other Williams into a foul and chucked it up to earn FTs, he made both. He blocked Barea’s drive. He swished a baseline fade. He missed a tougher one, same shot, just drifting more. He scored 12 points on 3-8 (5-5 from the line). Second Half: He missed a sideline jumper on our first possession. He missed a sideline pull-up. He probed off the high screen and hit the soft floater. He missed a long three on a poor offensive sequence. He missed a three over the zone. He blocked Barea’s drive. He attacked from the perimeter and was called for an offensive foul, looked like his arm was grabbed and pulled into Barea to erase the go-ahead hoop with 13 seconds left. Cheap way to lose.

Hibbert -- -- They went to more mobile defenders for most the second half, closing with Randle/Nance against the smaller Mavs lineup. Decent minutes from Hibbert when he was out there. He had a nice Lou Williams-like And-1 from the perimeter in this game. (Sure would be nice if other guys on the team picked up that skill.) Some moments where Roy used his size inside, as well. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-7 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He grabbed an offensive board and scored the layup. He missed an easy running jumphook at the front of the rim. Low position and he hit the short hook with his left. He swished the baseline jumper on the kickout from Randle. He slammed back down the missed Randle shot. Very short on an open wing jumper. Second Half: He drew contact on a dribble and instantly threw it up from 15 feet with one hand as he heard the whistle and it went in, he made the FT. Bad pass to Randle cutting (just wasn’t there), turnover. He roofed Parsons for a block and it ignited a breakaway score.

Randle -- -- He was dead straight on a three at the buzzer to win the game, just too long. Good looking attempt and it was nice to see one of the young guys get a chance there even if he wasn’t the primary option on that final play. Both Kobe and Metta on the bench giving him some love after that miss. Julius knocked down his first three shots in this one, all from the perimeter. The confidence was there from the start. He played at a good speed, as well. Defensively, he had the Dirk matchup and played him pretty tough. Unfortunately, Dirk hit that game winner on him with a couple seconds left. “That’s a Hall of Famer,” Scott said, giving Randle some props. Pretty good effort defensively by Randle on that as Dirk’s done that to people for years. Too bad Randle couldn’t get him back on the other end. Randle would also have to cover Parsons on occasion in the small ball lineups. (Some definite moments for Randle on both ends showing his mobility against Parsons.) Overall, very strong game again against the Mavs, finishing with the double-double. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. The Action: He swished a wing jumper for the Lakers first score. He knocked down a 20-footer next time down, no hesitation. He attacked from the elbow, spun and drew FTs, he made both. He sank a face-up 15-footer on iso over Dirk. He settled and missed the tough turnaround over Parsons. He missed Brown on the break but was fouled for FTs, he made one. He attacked and missed the short one in traffic. He kicked out to Hibbert for the open jumper. He missed a short jumphook with his right, but drew Hibbert’s man in the process and Roy slammed back in the offensive board. He swished another long jumper off the two-man game. Freight train mode off a defensive board up against the clock and he couldn’t get the tough runner to drop before the buzzer. He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting to go with 6 boards. Second Half: He missed a wing three with the shotclock low. He crossed over in the paint on the quick attack off the pass and he scored the And-1, he made the FT. He posted up the smaller man, but couldn’t hit the jumphook. He threw a bounce pass into Hibbert’s shins. He blew past Parsons on the drive for a layup. On the other end, great block off the glass from behind on a big to ignite a break. He bullied his way to the front of the rim on a drive but was called for using the off-arm, should have been FTs. He airballed a long jumper as the shotclock expired. XXX

Brown -- -- He got the start for Kobe. He was pretty invisible offensively. Very few notes on AB in this one. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 1 board and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He sank an open wing three on the kickout. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He missed another wing three.

Russell -- -- You could see his confidence fade a little early on with a couple of misses from three and a few turnovers. He was cold from three. Lakers needed him to make a couple more of those and this one is theirs. Some good minutes in the fourth, but he sat in the final couple minutes for Clarkson. At some point, we’ll need to let the young guys close vs. having Nick and Lou out there. Defensively, he also had issues with Barea in the first half. They moved him off Barea in the second half and Russell was much better on that end. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-12 shooting (1-6 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He attacked the paint (probably could have tried for the layup) and the kickout eventually led to a Clarkson three (hockey assist on this one). He probed the paint on the baseline, no one stuck with him on the dribble through so he hit the one-footed Dirk-like fade. He threw a bounce pass into the backcourt maybe expecting Nance to be cutting vs. spotting up. He coughed up the dribble again shortly later. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a catch-and-shoot wing three. He missed a baseline pull-up on iso. Another pass thrown away, trying to bounce to Bass on the baseline. Second Half: He was called for an offensive foul trying to post up Barea. He deflected a pass to get a stop. He faked a three, attacked the paint and missed the layup. He iso’d and knocked down the three. He backed it out and missed the long sideline jumper. He drew FTs on the same possession after keeping an offensive board alive, he made both. He sank a long wing jumper just shooting over Barea. He probed off the Black screen and set him up for FTs. He missed a baseline jumper on iso. He missed a wing three. He attacked with speed off the Randle screen and scored the layup. He drew FTs on a perimeter foul, he made one. He missed a three over the zone.

Nance -- -- Back in the rotation but coming off the bench. He was barely noticeable in the first half except for some defensive rotations. Some foul troubles for him in this game, although I don’t think he agreed with a couple of them. He got to some boards and was strong defensively in the second half. Kobe kicked him off the bench during the game, so he could sit. No love for the rookies. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed an open wing jumper. Second Half: Nice interior feed off the two-man game to Black for the dunk. He flagged down a pass on the two-man D out of a timeout to get the stop.

Bass -- -- Some foul trouble limited his minutes in this one. It was nice, however, to see the rookies get to try to finish the game. Both Randle and Nance put up a good effort on D. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-2 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He was rejected trying to power over McGee. He iso’d on McGee, spun and scored around him. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Lou, he made both. He drew FTs on a strip by Dirk, he made one. Second Half: He picked up a couple of fouls and had to sit. XXX

Young -- -- “Just build on it,” Nick said after the tough loss. With Kobe out, he got the backup SF minutes. He hit a couple of early threes, so Scott gave him some extended run. He did a good job on the glass and called himself “Little Worm” afterward since Rodman was at the game. We may have been drawing up the final shot for Nick. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-6 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a corner three. He hit Lou with the swing pass for a three. He swished a corner three on the kickout from Clarkson. He swished a wing three off the handoff out of the timeout. He missed a wing jumper after losing the dribble briefly. He bounced it to Randle off the two-man game for the jumper. Quick attack off the three line and he drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He scored 8 points on 2-4 shooting. Second Half: He got tapped on a sideline three on a kickout. He missed a corner three.

Black -- -- Guess who led the team in +/-? Tarik with a +5. He came in late in the third quarter when Bass picked up his fifth foul. It felt like Russell came to life around the same time. That gave the team a little spark. Black’s freethrows seem much scarier this season. He’s about a foot behind the freethrow line when he shoots them. The Stats: He finished with 3 points on 1-1 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nice switch on Barea and he forced a turnover on the pass. Russell found him on the screen-roll for FTs, he made one. He dunked off the interior feed from Nance.

Scott -- -- No D to start the game. Parsons lighting up his defenders for 11 of the Mavs 20 in the first 6 minutes… The Lakers trailed 24-18 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Randle scoring big early on… Russell in for Lou out of that timeout… They quickly tied it up forcing a Mavs timeout… Nance/Bass in for Hibbert/Randle out of that. Also, Young for Brown… Poor close and the Lakers trailed 32-25 after the first… Bass, Nance, Young, Lou, Russell to start the quarter… Lakers missed their last 7 shots… Lakers down 6 when Randle and Clarkson returned for Russell and Nance… Hibbert in for Bass shortly later… They took a 1-point lead and forced the timeout… Lakers up 2 when Bass came in for Hibbert with 2 minutes left… The Lakers led 58-56 at the half. Dirk had 3 points on 0-4 shooting. The Lakers were 5-11 from three, Just 3 turnovers for the Lakers and only 1 for the Mavs… Timeout with the score tied midway through the quarter. Shortly later, he subbed in Russell for Lou, same score… Bass in for Hibbert… Nance in for Randle, Lakers down 1… Bass picked up his fourth and fifth fouls, so Black came in for him with 1:26 left, down 4… Good close to the quarter and they took the lead… The Lakers led 78-77 heading into the fourth. He started the Black, Nance, Young, Clarkson, Russell lineup… Two illegal screens by Nance and Black to start the fourth… Lou in for Clarkson, Lakers down 3 a minute and a half into the quarter… The Lakers were up 85-84 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. He sat Black for Randle, going with the Nance/Randle bigman combo… Mavs go to a zone… Clarkson in for Young. So, a Russell, Clarkson, Williams trio all in… The Lakers struggling with the Mavs zone. Timeout, hopefully, to discuss it. Lakers down 2 with 2:31 left. He sat Russell for Young… Mavs go to Dirk for the baseline jumper with 2 seconds left… Randle missed a three at the buzzer..

Fourth - since TD took the first 3.

and Thanks DB!

Frustrating game. Even more frustrating that Scott benched DLO for 'trying to take over the game' only to wind up with a Randle 3 at the buzzer.

With 2.1 seconds left in the game why is Nance and Randle even in the game? Why not have your best catch and shoot guys on the floor?

I would have LOVED to hear what the final play call was in the Lakers huddle. Oh man, it must have been some intricate and amazing stuff. Please fire this clown.

Nance set a down screen for Lou to pop out to the three point line and go one on one or shoot over his man. The Mav's read it easily and denied him, so Randle had to come out and get the ball.

Actually one of my favorite games so far this year, at least until the final 2 minutes.

I would have liked to keep Russel in, obviously.

Loved seeing Randle hit those jumpers and mix it up. He showed some range on defense. He's working, you can tell. I rewinded the play a couple of time when he got his last offensive foul and I didn't see it.

Good to see Nance back in, hope his knee isn't too sore after this one.

Overall it was nice to see the Lakers in it, and this may have been the first game that was this close, with the young guys playing so many minutes down the stretch.

At one point it was

Russel
Randle
Nance
Lou
Clarkson

I believe, and they were playing against

Dirk
Parsons
JJ
Wes?
One other person.

But the point is, beside Lou, those were 4 rooks/sophomores competing with guys who have been in the league for years. Impressive.

Would have loved to see a win.

DB, great work per usual. Have to take exception though on you dogging my boy AB. Watching this dude play defense is great. He hasn't hit a rhythm on the other end but in the meantime is giving us something we desperately need.

Thanks DB.

Entertaining game for a change....but our offensive flow in the 4th was almost non-exiting and the final play ..just bad, why did clarkson made the inbound pass and not one of randle or nance...

Russell did not had a good game.. in the past games you could see that when he came in the the ball movement was better and the offense seemed better. Today..just the opposite...

Bleep Byron. Why do I even watch the games? I know he is going to find a way to put our players in a position to loose.

Scott didn't make them lose this one...it was obviously the refs. At the end of the game, the players on the floor gave the Lakers the option to go for a drive to the basket or win with a three.

I know I will take much flak, but I am a strong supporter of the Byron Scott regime. Contrary to popular opinion, I believe he has been doing a great job offensively/defensively with this team. And despite the losses, these young players are being prepared for next year. Not only are they being taught how to play the right way, you can see the fire and determination in their eyes. That is why Kobe and Metta were clapping at the end of the game, despite the loss.

Hi, Byron.

They were clapping to encourage them because they still have half a season to play and know there will plenty more times they'll taste defeat because of their coachs ineptitude.

Thanks DB. I think this game was a decent contest, one at last for our Lakers with a .500 team. Another loss for sure, but that's what will fulfill this season's arc: preserve good chances for keeping the pick. Losing with dignity doesn't hurt like fifteen point blowouts.
