Weird how time "feels" (not flies, but feels). When I think back to 96, some things make it feel like it was yesterday, and in other ways, it feels like 20 yrs. Remember watching this'n live, how bout you peeps? Too bad the comeback ended in a flameout, but FTR, that theory that Magic overturned the apple cart was bogus to a good degree even if it's the accepted theory. They weren't that good a team without him (down year after the brilliant 1994/5 season). Ced has said twice, decades apart that his Havasu excursion was his own dumb reaction to a family related situation. That was pinned on Earv as a sign that the team was in turmoil, yada yada. Harris liked using him in late stages of the games. Theory is that this upset the Gs and Fs (all 3 of the guys who admitted to calling him on their own volition to make the return in the first place). It was their own idea, it wasn't foisted on them. Anyway, great performance. He had a number of games that proved unequivocally that he had 2-3 more high level years after 1991 that got wasted.

This was the closeout game from 1996 in case you're a horror fan.

Houston scorched us, nothing we could've done to stop that. They were streaky by nature. Chick said many a time that Horry would hit 3 treys a game in Houston and then he can't throw a pea in the ocean here. Something about Hakeem in the middle that creates space, even with the arc at 22 feet.

NPZ with the goods.

Latrell Sprewell on Magic after the game: "He got me". Said it with a smile too. It was a privilege to get put in the popcorn machine.

Aside from some memorable playoff games, this was the most exciting game game I had the privilege of attending. The Forum was electric that night.

this is what this reminds me of...
how big guys like Magic were. This gets lost in the very embarrassing hype culture of today, where hype has been perfected to a science. All the subtleties of a guy like Magic gets lost. This is a guy who, if you were a kid in LA in the 80s, you were inspired by him. a whole big freaking city. this is one man (you can include Bird in there too) that single handedly saved the nba, and not too long ago at that.
i hate the culture of scientific, marketed hype now. Lebron, Curry right now. Just shoved down everyone's throats as the greatest things, but it's not real like Magic. Curry is making people care about the warriors, lebron makes people care about the cavs...magic made the country care about the NBA. then MJ came and monetarily/popularly took it to another level.

also, this style of nba ball is sooooooo different than now. geezus. so much more room for the ballet.

i know it makes no sense, but van exel is still my favorite player. and the same for a lot of people that were around at the time.

one thing that is just about gone from the game today because of zone and the small ball rules, is the mental trickery of basketball. there doesn't seem to be much room for that kind of stuff. a lot of play has been pushed out to the 3point line, which is why we are now seeing guys like curry becoming successful. there isn't a lot of interesting things developing inside the 3point line, which is ridiculous IMO.

good stuff.
