If Kobe kept #8, he would have pretty much owned it in the same way one thinks Jordan when they see 23. I think changing numbers screwed that up

Wish Lakers retire the #8. I can live with someone else wearing 24, but number way was unique.

He'll be the only player in the history of the league to have two numbers retired by the same team. It was brilliant.

I like having two different eras of Kobe. It shows how he was always reinventing his game as a bball player

#24 was one of the most fundamentally sound players of all time. #8 may have been the better player at his peak, but both deserve to be retired.

I was opposed to it at the time, but I'm glad he changed to #24. We had 2 great eras of Kobe, it was wonderful.

this is how good Kobe is, his #8 career alone is hall of fame worthy, same for his #24

No way! #24 just means so much. It's incredible. Watching an entire nation turn on someone, and having that person bounce back, break numerous scoring records, win 2 straight championships, and end up probably being the only person who will ever pose a serious threat to the legacy of 23.

i really am pretty curious about how his jersey will be retired. some kind of split jersey? cuz, they would have to retire both numbers, that's for sure...but how would it be displayed? if it were me, i'd do some kind of split home/away jersey. someone needs to do some photoshop prototypes.

#8 Kobe was such freak athlete while being one of best defenders in the league. Kobe was terrific two way player he played Pippen role defensively perfectly during Kobe/Shaq years.

He wanted to split his excellences in two.

2 four.

Eggxellent!

Retire both numbers.

To me he is bigger than any 23s

This dude can do it all against all sorts of defenses, scoring above 50 in just two or 3 quarters. And resting in 4th. Crazy to think about how many 70s or 80s he could have made if he had played all quarters.
