|
|
Quote: | Toyota is killing its Scion brand after years of slumping sales.
Beginning in August, 2017 model-year Scion vehicles will be rebadged as Toyotas. The FR-S sports car, iA sedan and iM 5-door hatchback will be a part of the Toyota line-up.
So will the C-HR, a small SUV concept that debuted in November, if Toyota decides to make it. The tC coupe will have a final release series edition and end production in August, according to Toyota Motor Corp.
Scion was formed in 2003 to attract younger buyers. It was known for its funky designs, like the boxy xB, and was the brand Toyota used when it wanted to experiment with new kinds of marketing, like pop-up test drives at the mall, or no-haggle pricing. |

Agreed, the rest of the line wasn't that great. The 1st generation xB was a hit but I don't think they could really follow up with that. Cheap, roomy, boxy, and utilitarian. The FR-S was promising, but it was kind of underpowered for how much they were asking for. |

Probably was more expensive trying to maintain a separate Scion dealer network when their sales was declining. Now with the model line rolled into Toyota's they can just discontinue the models that don't sell anymore. |

All of the dealerships just had a recent remodel just to include Scion. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

i guess scion has achieved its purpose (?) of increasing toyota's share among youth.
at this point, with the gt-86, i think it's clear that toyota doesn't need an artificially created "cool" brand to convince young buyers.
i for one would much prefer the gt-86 among any cars below $60000. |

Problem with that is that the FR-S aka GT-86 aka BRZ's sales numbers were rather poor despite the hype. I'm not even sure they'll have a 2nd generation considering how much it costs to develop a new model and Toyota is happy to make boring transportation vehicles that sell well in large numbers. |

Yeah, now they will raise the MSRP $2k and let you Greco-Roman wrestle with the sales manager for a few hours before you can get the original price.
I love haggling with plaid sports coat salesman and their managers. |

Yep, no doubt the FR-S will increase in price under Toyota. What passed for a bargain basement interior under the Scion brand is probably a no-no as a Toyota. The FR-S has had a hard time getting sales once all the enthusiasts bought their cars. |

Los Angeles and San Francisco are crazy dense. I wish they would allow kei car culture/rules in California.
Sadly, the American public won't buy into it. The east coast is buying into it a lot more in Virginia. _________________ Resident Car Nut.

Maybe baseline MSRP, but with sales figures the way they are they'll probably put up a ton of incentives to get rid of these things.
