Unable to Close… With both Manu and Duncan out, the Lakers made a game of it.

They led heading into the fourth quarter, stretched the lead to as many as 5 points and it was anyone’s game down the stretch.

A series of defensive miscues did them in during the final minute. They got backdoored by Parker for a score, gave up an easy And-1 to Aldridge and then sealed their fate on the final defensive stand of the game. No box out by Kobe on a miss and Kawhi had a free run to the offensive glass to get the miss. We had to foul with 1 second left after chasing the Spurs around, they made one FT and iced the game to take the 106-102 win over the Lakers.

“They’re a machine,” Lou Williams said of the Spurs.

The trio of Laker youngsters had all had stretches of strong ball. Randle with a big double-double, Clarkson with a strong scoring game and moments by Russell in the second half. While Kobe led the Lakers in scoring, he didn’t have the efficient output of the last few games. Still, he had a strong stretch in the third that helped keep the Lakers in it in his final trip to San Antonio.

Kobe -- -- Well, that lack of box out killed their chances for any late game heroics. Kobe just turned and watched the shot on the final defensive stand and that did the Lakers in. Not an efficient shooting game from Kobe. “He wasn’t making them like he had been in the last three or four games,” Scott said. But he did have a stretch of 10 points on three trips down the court in the third quarter to trim the Spurs lead to just 1. Scott had Young ready to sub in and brought him back to the bench during that stretch. Kobe had 16 points in that third quarter, helping the Lakers to a lead heading into the fourth. They wouldn’t have been able to take it down to the wire without him. Kobe said farewell to San Antonio, some loud cheers after the game from both purple and gold (a lot there) and Spurs fans. A lot of great battles on that court. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 9-28 shooting (4-14 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He sank a baseline jumper on iso for the Lakers first score. He missed a wing jumper coming off the pindown. He missed a Dirk fade on iso. He traveled, losing the handle on a pass. He missed a wing three. He missed an FT jumper and was irked he didn’t get the foul. He faked a handoff and missed a flat jumper. He missed a three on a mismatch. He scored a layup in transition off the great pass from Randle. He missed a long three on a two-for-one attempt. He missed a sideline three. Just 4 points in the half. Second Half: He swished the corner jumper to start the second half. He backed down Parker and missed the turnaround. He missed a wing three. He was called for three seconds trying to back Parker down in the paint. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He ball-faked to clear the lane on a drive and scored the layup. He rejected Aldridge on one end, then swished an elbow jumper on the other. Way short on a jumper. He drained a wing three and held the post, finally getting one to drop. He swished a three from the other side next time down. He hit another And-1 three over a double team attempt next time down (crowd stunned), he made the FT to complete the 4-point play. He iso’d, danced and missed the three next time down. He missed a tough corner jumper on iso. He missed a corner three up against the shotclock. He missed a flat 17-foot pull-up. He sank a sideline three in front of the Spurs bench on iso against Kawhi. He missed a heave from three. He attacked and kicked, hockey assist as we swung it to Lou for three. He missed the elbow fade. He airballed a jumper with 47 seconds left. He was fouled on the defensive glass on a missed FT, he made both his FTs.

Clarkson -- -- Both Kobe and Clarkson led the team in scoring, but both had letdowns in the final minute. Clarkson got backdoored by Parker with a minute left for an easy score. “We had some defensive slip ups,” Clarkson said afterward. He said they did a good job moving the ball and getting into the paint. Impressive offensive game from Clarkson against a tough team. He’s able to get a decent shot off whenever he’s on the move. We switched up the sub pattern a little in this one, going opposite with Lou/Clarkson. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 9-14 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a pull-up jumper. He swished a tough shot-clock beating jumper standing on the three line after dancing with the ball. He couldn’t finish at the front of the rim off a drive. He popped open on the baseline and Russell found him for the jumper. He changed directions on the dribble on a mismatch and scored the layup. Way short on the jumper but he got the board and scored a layup. He was blocked on a layup on transition. He drew FTs on a floater, he made both. He scooped up a loose ball and hit the wing three. He threw down a lob from Lou after cutting weakside with no one on him. He scored 15 points on 6-10 shooting. Second Half: He swished a baseline floater over the help D, quick off the floor. He sank a pull-up jumper in the lane over Parker. Bad decision trying to go over the top of a screen and he gave up a layup. Sloppy pass in transition, points the other way. He missed a long three over the D on a busted set. Nice putback slam off Black’s missed jumphook. He got backdoored with a minute left to give up a layup, ouch.

Randle -- -- Balling. His rebounding is elite. Had this been his rookie season, they’d be making a bigger deal out of Randle’s game. Since he’s not, well, Jabari Parker gets featured in All Star weekend, despite Randle having better numbers then him across the board. But back to his rebounding, it’s not just good for a rookie, he’s among the elite rebounders in the league in his per 36 numbers. Tonight, he pulled down 17 to go with those 15. A couple of those resulted in coast-to-coast push outs that led to scores (one a layup with his right, one a great feed for Kobe). That jumper wasn’t there again and the Spurs would sag off him. That doesn’t just hurt him, but some of the team offensive sequences because the Spurs could plug the lane to disrupt. It will come. Slowly, we’re getting more confidence in his right hand. Defensively, he needed to hold ground a little better against Aldridge at times. He gave everyone a scare late. He chased after an airball with 47 seconds left trying to save it and came down on the photographers (I hate that everything is so close to the action both under the hoops and on the sideline). He came down on top of equipment and people, scary moment. He said afterward he was all right. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-12 shooting to go with 17 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He missed an elbow jumper. He sank a pull-up jumper at the FT line working off the two-man game. He lost the handle trying to create down the middle of the lane. He missed a reverse in transition. He missed a 15-footer. He probed down the middle of the lane and scored the layup. Active on the offensive glass and he drew FTs, he made both. He grabbed a rebound, pushed it up the middle of the floor, put on a burst of speed to his right and scored the layup with his right. He grabbed another board, pushed it up, surveyed the floor and zipped a pass through traffic to Kobe for the layup, so nice. He had Parker on a mismatch, attacked him off the dribble, lost him with spin move and scored a layup over the help D. He scored 10 points to go with 8 boards in the half. Second Half: He missed the open 18-footer. He iso’d and missed an awkward jumphook in the lane. He flashed to the ball and hit the step-back in the lane. He crossed over Aldridge on the drive and drew FTs, he made both. He swiped a post entry and ignited a break. He was blocked trying to create against the shotclock. He tracked down a loose ball, attacked and drew FTs with 1:12 left, he made one to trail by 1.

Williams -- -- “They made a couple more plays than we did,” Lou said. Those happened in the final minute. Lou hit a big three down the stretch and did his usual good work to get to the FT line. Four Lakers led the team with 4 assists each, including Lou. He led the team in minutes with 37. Once All Star weekend hits, the team is going to move him back to the bench, it appears. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 3-9 shooting (2-7 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He drew the whistle and chucked to earn FTs, he made both. He sank an open wing jumper on the weakside off a cross-court feed. He missed a corner three. He was blocked on a jumper. He attacked baseline and kicked out to Young for the three. His bounce pass was picked off, so he fouled to stop a break. He spotted Clarkson cutting free from the weakside and lobbed to him for the dunk. He missed an open wing three off a nice screen by Sacre. He baited a man into the reach foul off the high screen behind the three line, he made all three. He had 7 points and 3 assists at the half. Second Half: He made a tech FT. He swished a wing three. He missed a drifting sideline three, but got his own miss. He was blocked on a three. He swished a wing three initiated on the Kobe drive and kick before swinging it to Lou. He missed a three at the buzzer.

Hibbert -- -- He twisted his ankle under the hoop after Parker made him look silly (thankfully, Parker missed the layup, or that would be on the highlight reel). Unfortunately for Roy, he was done for the night shortly after that. Sprained ankle. He’s the only Laker to start every game. That may end in the next one defending on his injury. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 2 boards and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He swished a wing catch-and-shoot jumper.

Russell -- -- Some dumb fouls on inbounds passes got him in foul trouble early in this one. That limited his minutes in the first half. In the second half, he was making some things happen off the two-man sequences. He and Black have some of the better moments on those plays. He set up Black for a dunk that forced Pop to call a timeout. “We made tough shots. We made shots when we needed to,” Russell said of the game. Defensively, he has some excellent moments in team D reads. That’s only going to get better, but you knew that was going to be a strength of his coming into the league because of his IQ. He’s got a lot of potential on that end with his length and IQ. I’d love it if he had a vet PG that could help mentor him more on that end. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-7 shooting (2-4 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a short face-up jumper out of the post a couple seconds after entering. He hit Clarkson for the open jumper. He sealed his man after getting past him on the screen and was fouled from behind on the pull-up jumper, he made both FTs. He bounced a pass to Black under the hoop for FTs. He missed a wing three. He picked up two fouls on one stand and had to sit with his third early. Second Half: He worked off the high screen and swished the three. He missed a tough fade trying to beat the shotclock. He was fouled cutting backdoor to take a pass, he made both FTs. He worked the two-man game, fast roll to the hoop by Black and Russell found him for the dunk. He swished the wing jumper getting his man on his hip on the two-man game. He missed a wing three off the high screen. He fumbled a swing pass, got it back and drained the three. On the other end, superb read on the weakside rotation and the Spurs threw the pass right to him under the hoop.

Young -- -- Quiet game from Nick. He made just one three, probably his best look of the night. At some point, I wonder when we’re going to get Brown some more minutes again. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up three. He swished an open corner three on a kickout. Second Half: He missed a wing three.

Bass -- -- He hasn’t had some of the huge games he’s had in the past where we’ve worked the ball well to him off the screen-roll. But the team has played better defensively in the past couple of games, going to a lot of the more mobile smaller lineups and keeping Hibbert’s minutes short. Hard to say if Hibbert will be out, but it seems Scott may go more with Sacre to fill some of those minutes. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-5 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a short jumphook. He missed a layup attacking from the perimeter. He dunked on the breakaway after stealing a pass. He drew FTs on an inbounds, he made both. Second Half: He missed a bank under some duress. He blocked a drive in the middle of the paint. He missed a tough baseline jumper up against the shotclock.

Black -- -- I’m hopeful he’ll get more minutes with Russell. Seems like they have some brief stretches of chemistry but we explore that a inconsistently. Black still needs to work on the FTs. He clanked a couple more tonight. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards (3 offensive) and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He grabbed a miss, missed the putback and tipped it in. He drew FTs on the bounce pass from Russell under the hoop, he missed both. Second Half: He battled for a Kobe miss, missed his own jumphook but Clarkson jammed it back in. Nice D on Diaw forcing him into a bad attempt from the post. Quick roll to the hoop and Russell whipped the pass to him for the dunk.

Sacre -- -- He came in with 6 minutes left in the first half with Roy out with the sprain. He had to deal with massive Marjanovic during that stretch. He would start the second half and take over that Hibbert stint, before we closed the game with the Black, Bass, Randle trio the rest of the night. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 block and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He airballed an elbow jumper. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made both. Second Half: He was blocked on a layup in transition.

Scott -- -- I think most fans will be happy with a competitive effort from the team and growth from the rookies, and still losing at this stage in the season… The Lakers trailed 12-8 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. He sat Lou for Russell… Bass in for Roy, Young in for Kobe, Lakers down 7 with 4 minutes to go… Black in for Randle… The Lakers trailed 29-20 after the first… He went with the Black, Bass, Young, Williams and Russell lineup… After Russell picked up his second and third quickly, Clarkson came in for him early in the second… Lakers down 8 when Kobe and Randle returned for Young and Bass… Sacre in for Black with 6 minutes left… They cut it to 2… Randle doing work and the Lakers took a lead… The Lakers trailed 54-51 at the half. Spurs 8 turnovers, Lakers 4… He started Sacre for Hibbert in the second half… The Lakers trailed by 9 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Spurs out in transition… They cut it 4 before it went back up to 7 when Russell came in for Lou and Bass in for Sacre… Kobe with 10 points on three trips in a row down court and the Lakers trailed by just 1… Black in for Randle… The Lakers led 81-79 heading into the fourth quarter… He started the Black, Bass, Young, Williams, Russell unit… They extended the lead to 5, the Spurs started turning up the intensity… The Spurs called a timeout down 4 after a dunk by Black off the two-man game with Russell… Russell orchestrating things and hitting big shots. Kobe in for Young, Lakers up 1… The offense started to bog down as Russell was deferring. Awkward transition when Kobe came in… Clarkson in for Russell with 3:23 left… Down 3 with 47 seconds left, they gave up an And-1 layup to Aldridge rolling off a screen. Kobe was fouled off that missed FT rebound and cut it back to 3. The Spurs ran clock and called timeout with 16 left. No box out by Kobe and Kawhi with the offensive board. Ouch…

Kobe mentioned that he was playing the percentages and lost. Specifically he shared that on Green's shot, the ball usually go the other side of the rim. He assess upon seeing Leonard going strong side to go for the rebound, the Spurs' D will be out of balance.

Regarding JC's defensive miscue, once Kobe saw that Leonard was bringing up the ball on a set play (something Leonard never does), Kobe was yelling Back Door. When the ball went into the post, JC turned his head that prompted Parker to go backdoor - just inexperience

If Randle get a consistent jumper, Goodbye Karl Marlone! Great Write-Up DB!

Thanks DB.

I disagree slightly with your assessment of Russell in Q4. With about 3-4 minutes left Lakers were in the lead even with the Spurs tighening up their game. Russell goes out and we lose the lead and the game.

Are you referring to when Kobe came in? I thought that was a little bit of an awkward transition where Russell had things rolling, then things sputtered for a few possessions trying to change up what we were doing briefly. I think we got back on track but there was just a stretch of a few possessions where it was choppy.

I think there's a much higher percentage of grabbing a board if you properly put a body on a man.

Agreed that when Kobe came in it was choppy. I am referring to when Russell went to the bench the offense went from moving the ball around to get the best shot to straight iso ball. Last two minutes was nothing but iso.

Not sure why Clarkson was out so long in the 4th.. He was playing really well in this one. Even the spurs announcers pointed this out...
