PostPosted: Tue Feb 09, 2016 8:33 am    Post subject: Byron: "D'Angelo is not old enough for me to discuss what he thinks" - has not communicated to Russell about Starting

Quote:
Byron Scott hasn’t talked to D'Angelo Russell about starting after All-Star break

"Communication."

When we talk about Lakers’ coach Byron Scott’s questioned player development skills with young players Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, and particularly D'Angelo Russell, it is his old-school lack of communication that comes into question. It’s what is different from what Gregg Popovich or Quin Snyder or other guys developing strong young players have done. From the outside (we’re not in practices/film sessions), we see Scott was not letting Russell play through mistakes — feeling that was rewarding bad behavior — but then not doing a good job communicating what the player is doing wrong.

“Scott says he plans to start Russell after NBA All-Star weekend (Feb. 12-14). But Scott said the two have not talked about that issue," according to the LA Daily News.

“He is not old enough for me to have a meeting with him and discuss, ‘What do you think?’” Scott said.

I would say you should have that meeting — it’s called a teachable moment. “What do you think? Well here is what I see that is different.”

Part of what is going on with Scott and Russell is the concern from some in the Lakers’ camp that Russell comes off cocky as Scott puts it, that his ego is big. So they are trying to take him down a peg. I would say that for a smart player — and Russell is that — the game is humbling and will take care of the ego issue. But you’ve got to give him run to develop him.

Play him, and then communicate with him. It’s a system that does worth with modern players.

What's hilarious is the "too cocky" and his "ego is too big."

I mean, we're doing a farewell tour for Kobe.

We got guys like Shaq, etc. The Lakers breed on that cocky lead player. It's hilarious.

I think it's most likely leaked from Scott's camp.

Does this belong in the BS P&M thread or the Official DR thread? I'm torn...

I actually do understand young players having to pay their dues. Respect isn't handed down, it's earned.

What I don't understand is this kid might be a big part of our future. He's not Sacre. He has upside that should be nurtured, not ignored. The animosity in BS's undertones when referring to DLO can't be healthy either.

I think you mean WORST COACH IN THE HISTORY OF THE LEAUGE.

He holds or is tied with the worst win % in NBA coaching history.

If you're laughing then it already is comical.

I'm not sure why anyone is even the least bit surprised by this point. Everything that comes out of his mouth is idiotic and cringe worthy.

Somehow, Jeanie/Jim/Mitch feel like they owe it to him to let him finish the year.

We're the Lakers and we're supposed to be loyal to winning. Right now it seems like this KFT is just an easy way to not make tough decisions.

Did anyone else catch Byron laughing openly at Mahinmi and looking him up and down as Ian complained to the ref during a foul?

Byron is a hypocrite.

Bizarre stuff to hear coming from the Laker head coach. A "not old enough" jab at the kid just conjures up the other side of the perspective for me: Byron's too old mentally, too old stylistically, just too old-old-old waaaaaay beyond his age.

Bryon gets a lot of hate on this site so i defend him from time to time but I cant defend this comment. Communication is the key to everything in life. Even more important if youre the coach, come on man.

I agree that he shouldn't be asking DLo what he thinks about starting, but that is all he has to say. No reason to bring in the age comment. Just a simple no and coach's decision would have sufficed. It's like he has to get a dig in there.

In either case, sounds like good news for DLo.

Ok Byron we get it, you're joking right? But come on, Aprils Fools is still 2 months away. No reason to go spouting dumb comments like this so early. I mean it has to be a joke right? No Head Coach in this day and age would say something so putrid like that right? Right?
