Marlo Stanfield was one of the very few flaws of that entire series, and he was a big flaw because he was a major character. First of all, the actor portraying him had absolutely zero charisma or acting chops. Unless you like someone who has one facial expression, is monotone, and has less energy than Jeb Bush. Secondly, the writers made him one dimensional. The character doesn't have any redeeming qualities. Both of these things stick out like a sore thumb in that series because the creators otherwise did such a fabulous job casting good actors and writing multidimensional characters with arcs, flaws, vulnerabilities, and virtues.

I thought Marlo was a great character. Ruthless and cold blooded as they come, and all about respect & power. Kinda funny when you consider how he ended up, pretty much getting what String was looking for all along in going legit, but doesn't care about it because it was more about the power than the money to Marlo.

I disagree as far as his casting for Marlo. He wasn't supposed to have redeeming qualities. We weren't supposed to be endeared to him. But, the same guy was also cast as a cop in the Amazon original "Bosch" and it's a big failure. He's hard to understand at times. I don't think he was an experience actor when he got the role of Marlo. He's an ex-boxer who went out for the role of Cutty.

I thought Marlo was supposed to be dead like that. He was just a complete sociopath, representing the way the world got darker.

There are two different kinds of villains that I like:
1. Multidimensional with an arc (and charisma helps too).
2. One dimensional, but the actor is incredibly charismatic.

The first kind of villain would be like Walter White and Benjamin Linus, while the second kind would be like Joffrey Baratheon and Anton Chigurh.

The dude who plays Marlo is a terrible actor. If you want to include a "villain" from The Wire because it is one of the best shows of all time, then pick Stringer or Avon.

First one I thought of was Gus Fring. Giancarlo did an amazing job with that character.

Enjoyed this list. I don't necessarily agree with the order of some of these, but I was happy to see Gus Fring and Joffrey Baratheon get their due.

Well done Rolling Stone.

Livia Soprano at #3?

Sounds like the writer has some mommy issues. She was unlikable but I never even thought of her as villainous. She was just one part of Tony's life, like his wife and kids, that humanized him beyond a stereotypical mafioso guy.
