Foster, who will be 30 next month, signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins, according to ESPN. The four-time Pro Bowl selection said he’s still got a lot left.

“I still feel like a Pro Bowl-caliber player,” Foster said on a conference call Monday evening, “and I intend to go out and show it.”

So essentially, Houston and Miami swapped RB's. He does play well in even years (2010, 2012, 2014 have all been improvements from the prior years) and it's only a 1 year cheap deal so I'm happy with it. Gives a mentor for Ajayi and with their injury histories, ought to combine for 16 games.

The way I view it is Foster is known to have those big explosions where he goes off for 200 yards and carries his team to a W. If he can do that at least once for us, then you are essentially paying 1.5m for an extra win. If he can have two or more of those games, then that would just be gravy.

Quote:
No Raiders gear in Ken Stabler’s Hall of Fame display

Even though Packers fans may not like it, it’s easy to explain the presence of a Vikings jersey in Brett Favre’s Hall of Fame display at Canton. It’s much harder to explain the absence of Raiders gear in Ken Stabler’s display.

Darren Rovell of ESPN posted earlier today an image of the Raider-free Stabler display. There’s a Saints helmet, an AFC Pro Bowl helmet, an AFC Pro Bowl jersey. It appears the locker has a game ball from a Raiders-Cardinals contest tucked into the upper corner, and the cleats, shoulder pads, and other pads may have come from a Raiders uniform, the display doesn’t have a Raiders jersey, helmet, pants, and anything else that would make it clear that Stabler played for the Silver and Black.

There’s also no gear from his time with the Oilers, which is odd as well. Then again, if the display had any Houston memorabilia that Stabler had worn, the absence of Raiders gear would have been even more glaring.

It’s more bizarre than disrespectful. And even if there’s an explanation for it, there’s no excuse for the omission.

Quote:
Hall of Fame explains Raiders omission from Stabler display

Brett Favre’s Hall of Fame enshrinement display made waves for what it included. Ken Stabler’s made waves for what it didn’t.

But with the display containing no Raiders helmet, jersey, or pants, the folks who run the museum in Canton have made it clear that the Raiders have a real presence, in connection with the commemorations of the man known as the Snake.

Most of the “artifacts” (presumably, shoulder pads, cleats, and other padding) come from Stabler’s time in Oakland. Also, there’s another display featuring a silver and black Stabler jersey. Apparently, it’s only five feet away from the official display that appears to be Raider-free.

Ultimately, the Favre and Stabler controversies aren’t bad for the Hall of Fame. They generated a little extra buzz for the place in Canton that thrives on people choosing to go there. It’s one thing to go there to see what’s in there. Some may now want to go there to see what isn’t.

Saturday night saw one of the greatest Packers quarterbacks of all time get inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Sunday night will reportedly see an unknown one get the first snaps of the exhibition season. Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Joe Callahan will get the start against the Colts in the Hall of Fame game with Aaron Rodgers and Brett Hundley each getting the night off.

Rodgers is healthy, but hasn’t shown much interest in playing a fifth preseason game and likely would have made only a cameo if he did see the field. He didn’t practice on Thursday as Callahan took the most first-team snaps and Hundley hasn’t practiced since hurting his ankle early this week, leaving the undrafted rookie from Wesley College in position to start.

“First NFL snap, there’s definitely going to be some nerves but then there’s going to be a lot of excitement, too,” Callahan said. “I’m going to try and make sure I’m level-headed and calm so I’m not firing the ball all over the place. That’s one of the things: Don’t let my emotions get the best of me.”

Marquise Williams, another undrafted rookie, is the other quarterback slated to see action for the Packers.

Damn, was hoping to see Hundley.

Poor field conditions jeopardize Hall of Fame Game

Tonight’s Hall of Fame Game, the annual NFL preseason opener, is in jeopardy of being canceled after teams went on pregame warmups and saw poor field conditions.

ESPN, which is scheduled to televise the game tonight, reports that the wrong paint was used on the surface in Canton, Ohio, and it has led to the field surface being considered unsafe to play on.

Although the grounds crew initially said the surface would be fine, players and coaches on both teams inspected the turf and have expressed concern that the paint job could result in injuries.

Fans are currently lining up outside the stadium, unsure whether they’re actually going to see a game tonight. Many fans from Indianapolis and Green Bay traveled to Canton to experience the full Hall of Fame weekend, which is supposed to include the game.

The playing surface in Canton has been criticized in the past. Last year players on the Steelers said kicker Shaun Suisham’s injury was caused by the turf in Canton.

Given last year’s issue, the NFL should have done everything in its power to ensure that the game would be played without a hitch this year. If this game has to be canceled, it’s a huge black eye for the NFL.

Game was cancelled....never really understood why they painted those giant logos in the mid-field other than for advertisement purposes.

Hall of Fame president: Canceling the game “very, very difficult”

Pro Football Hall of Fame President David Baker says the decision to cancel tonight’s Hall of Fame Game wasn’t easy but was necessary because of unsafe field conditions.

“This is a very, very difficult decision for us today,” Baker said on ESPN. “A lot of these fans came a long way. But we think it’s the only decision that can be made.”

Baker said the field was ready to go until today, when the grounds crew used the wrong kind of paint to put the logos on the 50-yard line and in the end zones.

“This is a brand-new field,” he said. “It passed the test when it was first installed, it passed the test this morning when the cover came off from the enshrinement, but apparently as a result of painting some things at the midfield and the end zone, the paint congealed. And I think there were some players who had some concerns, some physicians from the teams who had some concerns. We thought we would be able to remediate it by delaying the game for as much as an hour. But in the end, if it’s remotely close to unsafe, we conferred with the league, we think the best thing to do is respect the safety of the players. It’s the only thing to do.”

Baker said he talked to players on both teams and they’ve agreed to come out and greet the fans in attendance. The Hall of Fame will also have a moment to recognize this year’s enshrinement class. But there won’t be a game.

“There were still some guys who wanted to play, just like football players are,” Baker said.

Players who are trying to earn a roster spot surely wanted to go out there and prove themselves. Now they won’t get that chance.

New Rules for 2016 Announced. They are destroying the game right before our eyes:

QB contact rule:
Quote:

“Even if a defender is coming off a block and wrapping his arms, he must avoid making forcible contact with his helmet, shoulder, forearm, or chest.”

Updated Horsecollar Rule:

Quote:
Before this year, it was legal to pull an opponent down by the top of his jersey without grabbing the horse collar. Now, you can’t grab by the back or side of the jersey in the nameplate area at all.

Taunting Rules:

Quote:
Two penalties in the same game for “punches or kicks without contact,” “use of abusive or threatening language toward an opponent,” or “any act that constitutes ‘taunting'” will result in ejections.

So now you can be ejected for trash talk?

Houston Texans gift Stephen Curry shoes to 40-year-old punter

In one corner, Stephen Curry defends his shoes as “fire.”

In the other corner, everyone else is mocking the dad shoes.

The blowout continues.

Peter King of Monday Morning Quarterback:

“Sunday was punter Shane Lechler’s 40th birthday. On Sunday night, O’Brien and players Vince Wilfork, Brian Cushing and Johnathan Joseph called Lechler to the front of the team auditorium, gave him a cake shaped like the number 40, and also got him a walker, some Rogaine, and those Steph Curry sneakers people think look old-fashioned.”

Old NFL people like the shoes – which pretty much proves the point.

Just as The Office was beginning to show its age and lose its edge, a storyline emerged with Michael Scott and Jim Halpert serving as co-managers of the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. The same thing could be happening for the Denver Broncos, in more ways than one.

At quarterback, Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian have been named co-starters on the team’s first depth chart of the year, via multiple reports.

The Dwight Schrute in the equation apparently is Paxton Lynch, who is at best the assistant to the co-starting quarterbacks, at least for now.

It remains to be seen how the preseason reps will be divided between Sanchez and Siemian. Presumably, they’ll get roughly equal reps with the No. 1 offense until the third preseason game. By then, coach Gary Kubiak should be closer to naming the first guy who inevitably will be benched at some point during the regular season.

When Robert Griffin III takes the field in Week One, he will be the Browns’ 25th starting quarterback since the franchise returned from its three-year hiatus in 1999.

Griffin, who was officially named the Browns’ starter today, joins a long list of starting quarterbacks in Cleveland that includes first-round draft busts, veterans who came to Cleveland at the ends of their careers, young quarterbacks who later had more success elsewhere, and both McCown brothers.

Here’s the full list of Browns quarterbacks since they re-entered the league as an expansion team in 1999: Tim Couch, Ty Detmer, Doug Pederson, Spergon Wynn, Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, Luke McCown, Trent Dilfer, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, Ken Dorsey, Brady Quinn, Bruce Gradkowski, Colt McCoy, Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace, Brandon Weeden, Thaddeus Lewis, Jason Campbell, Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel, Connor Shaw, Josh McCown, Austin Davis, Robert Griffin III.

The Browns aren’t the only team starting a new quarterback in Week One this season. Another team that will have a new quarterback in place in Week One is the Patriots, who will lose Tom Brady to a four-game Deflategate suspension.

Here’s the entire list of Patriots starting quarterbacks since 1999: Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, Jimmy Garoppolo.

We’ll see if Griffin can be the Browns’ best quarterback since they returned to the NFL. That’s a pretty low bar to clear.

Quote:
Tim Tebow turns his attention to baseball

Tim Tebow hasn’t reached the same heights in professional football that Michael Jordan reached in professional basketball, but that doesn’t mean he can’t steal a page from Jordan’s book when it comes to unexpected second acts in sports.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Tebow is “actively pursuing a career in professional baseball” and plans to hold a workout, shirtless and rainy or otherwise, for major league teams later this month. Tebow, who resisted any and all calls to change his football position, has been training in Arizona and California.

Tebow will also be turning 29 later this month, which is a late start date for a career on the diamond but it’s not the first time that the prospect of Tebow wielding a bat has come up. Tebow hit .494 as a high school junior and some veteran baseball scouts said he would have been drafted coming out of high school if he had played his final year, but Tebow was off to Gainesville to pursue gridiron glory in what would have been his final high school semester.

It’s impossible to know what kind of skills Tebow might still have, but his name would probably make a few minor league teams interested in bringing him onboard to test them out in front of paying customers who might not show up to watch more typical aspiring baseball players. Going that route never got Jordan to the big leagues, but he had a bit more to fall back on in his first athletic pursuit.

Tony Siragusa out, Chris Spielman in at FOX

FOX has announced its 2016 NFL broadcasting teams, and Tony Siragusa is out and Chris Spielman is in.

As previously reported, Siragusa won’t be back at the network where he was a polarizing analyst: Some fans enjoyed his colorful, jocular attitude while others thought he offered more hot air than analysis.

Spielman, who previously called college football at ESPN, offers plenty of analysis. During his career as a Pro Bowl linebacker he was well known for intense film study, and as a commentator he’s one of the best in the business at recognizing the subtle nuances of the game and explaining them in a way fans can understand.

All seven of FOX’s announcing teams will have sideline reporters, including Pam Oliver, who returns for her 22nd season as an NFL sideline reporter. Despite past reports that Oliver was unhappy when she was replaced by Erin Andrews on the No. 1 broadcast team and would leave the network, Oliver remains at FOX, where she is consistently one of football’s top sideline reporters.

Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Andrews remain the No. 1 team at FOX and will call Super Bowl LI at the end of the season.

Safety Shiloh Keo was a late addition to the Broncos last season and it appears any time he spends with the team during the 2016 season will get off to a delayed start as well.

The Broncos announced that Keo has been suspended for the first two games of the season for a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy. Keo can practice and play in the preseason before serving his suspension.

Keo was arrested for driving under the influence in Idaho in February. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI in July, receiving a sentence of probation, a suspended license and a fine.

Keo signed with the Broncos after sending a tweet to defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who coached Keo in Houston, to announce he was available while Denver was dealing with several injuries in the secondary. He had five tackles and an interception in four regular season games and saw action in two postseason contests.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had an unremarkable performance on offense on Thursday in Baltimore. He had a somewhat remarkable performance while the team played defense on Thursday.

Newton ran onto the field while linebacker A.J. Klein was returning an interception 94 yards for a touchdown, drawing a five-yard penalty and nullifying the play.

After the game, Newton didn’t want to spend much time talking about his faux pas.

“I just got too excited,” Newton told reporters, via David Newton of ESPN.com. “I was hoping they would give a warning.”

Newton then was asked whether he said anything to Klein about the incident.

“Next question,” Newton said. “I don’t want to have a discussion about something that I’ve learned from. You live and you learn. . . . It happened. We all learned something as a team. We’re moving forward.”

Maybe I’m a little mixed up here, but I was under the clear impression that last night’s game wasn’t Week One of the regular season, but Week One of the preseason. The fact that Cam Newton was sufficiently “excited” by a play in a preseason game to run onto the field while the play was still happening is a little odd. The fact that he didn’t simply say during the press conference, “It’s a preseason game, why do you care?” is even more odd.

And so the questions will persist regarding whether the highs are too high and the lows are too low for Newton, and whether there’s a sweet spot somewhere between running out on the field to celebrate a preseason play and getting defensive over post-game questions about it.

Finding that middle ground becomes critical, if things don’t come as easily for Newton and the Panthers this year as they did for nearly all of last year. It could be the difference between Newton being one of the best quarterbacks in the game today and one of the best quarterbacks of all time.

Dez Bryant gives up his pet monkey

Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant was criticized by animal rights groups as “completely irresponsible” for buying a pet capuchin monkey. Now Bryant has given that monkey away.

Bryant told KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket that he gave his monkey, which he named Dallas Bryant, to a friend in the country.

“But I get to see him,” Bryant said, via the Dallas Morning News. “He was one of us, the monkey was one of us. He got pure-A1 treatment.”

Although capuchins can be wonderful helpers for people with disabilities, getting a monkey for a pet is not a good idea. Bryant was wise to give up his monkey. We hope his unnamed friend in the country is able to give Dallas Bryant the kind of home he deserves.

Dolphins fans love Dallas Thomas.

That might come as news (or a shock) to those who criticize Thomas to the point that he rivals quarterback Ryan Tannehill as the most-dissected players on the roster — quite a feat considering Thomas is a guard.

But Thomas said Sunday that when he runs into fans, they “love me” and want to take pictures with him.

It’s the fans he runs into on social media — or, more accurately, the ones he avoids on social media — where he has a problem.

“Social media gives people — um, what’s a good way to say it? It gives them balls, you know. It gives them balls that they wouldn’t say it to your face.”

“I have social media but I’m never on it,” Thomas said.

Of course this is also probably the worst guard in the NFL today as evidenced here in the first preseason game, where he got pushed behind his QB. That's actually his standard play. I also heard Thomas tried to block the Twitter troll but he still got through....

Former NFL star Darren Sharper has been sentenced to 18 years and four months in prison in a case where he was accused of drugging and raping as many as 16 women in four states.

U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo sentenced Sharper on Thursday, telling him she couldn't understand how he did what he did, since he was college educated and obviously had grown up "in one of the most loving households."

"We can never ignore the damage you inflicted on those women and society at large," she said.

Sharper had pleaded guilty in federal court in New Orleans to drugging three women so he could rape them. He also has pleaded guilty or no contest in state courts in Louisiana, Arizona, California and Nevada to charges arising from allegations of drugging and raping women.

Tom Brady sits out after cutting his right thumb with scissors

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is nursing a cut on the thumb on his throwing hand.

Tom E. Curran of CSNNE.com reports that Brady sliced his right thumb with a pair of scissors today and left Gillette Stadium.

According to the report, Brady was trying to remove something from the bottom of his shoe when he suffered the injury.

It is unclear how serious the cut is, and unknown whether Brady will play in any preseason games at all. But it doesn’t sound like anything serious enough that it would affect him in October, when he returns to the field after his four-game Deflategate suspension.

A few notes from last night's Patriots game:

1) AJ Derby looks like a very good young TE. He's a former college QB who realized that he was never go to make it to the pros at that position. Like many former QBs, he has a strong grasp of how to adjust his routes to the defense, even though he's still learning the position. He's a very willing blocker, and works on special teams. I can see him bumping Clay Harbor off the roster, who is a pretty decent vet TE.

2) The jury is still out on Jimmy Garoppolo, despite the happy talk in the newspapers and sports sites. There are definite holes in his game: a) When you defend him, defend the flats and the sidelines. He is very reluctant to throw passes down the middle of the field, and in fact two of his worst passes during the preseason were down the middle. b) He might be telegraphing his screen passes (I'd have to review tape, which I'm not going to do at this juncture). He ran several screens this preseason, and each time the defense anticipated and smothered the play. c) He takes too long to find a secondary receiver. What makes Brady outstanding is his vision and ability to process the defense and find that secondary target quickly. I realize that's an unfair comparison as Brady is otherworldly quick, and Garoppolo is at this juncture quite slow. Maybe he'll improve with more experience. d) Garoppolo has subpar pocket awareness. He was slightly better last night, but he's working with an OL that was one of the worst in the NFL last season, so his life is going to be on the line when he faces Arizona and possibly Buffalo (though the latter might be neutralized due to injury). e) In both preseason games, Garoppoloa started slow in the first quarter, then became very productive in the second quarter. I'm not sure if this is rhythm, or if this is because he has trouble with first team defenses. It's the preseason, and frequently first team gets pulled after the first quarter.

I'm being very critical of Jimmy G., as he'll be the starting QB for the first four games this season. It's only his third season, and he's only played a few regular season snaps, so perhaps some of those holes will disappear with experience. There are quite a few positives; if he "gets it" he'll be a very good franchise QB for another team in a season or two.

3) DT Anthony Johnson had an incredible game. I don't know if this is indicative of future performance, he's been an all but forgotten and undrafted player for two other NFL teams. He has an explosive first step, making him a potentially important third-down DT, something the Patriots lack on the roster.

4) The NE OL looked better than they did last week. Last week they were obviously out of synch, and a work in progress. The previous OL coach was fired this offseason, as he was better as a cheerleader than coach. Last week the interior OL was decent, but the OTs were weak. They have a long ways to go, but they made definite progress.

5) Jacoby Brissett (the unheralded QB I heavily advocated before the draft) played very well for a rookie. Though athletic, he doesn't over-rely on that athleticism with happy feet or prematurely abandoning a designed passing down by looking to scramble for a running lane, which hinders QB development. In fact, I like the way he keeps his eyes focused downfield for an open receiver when he's forced to escape a collapsing pocket (most QBs lower their eyes to survey the pressure and look for an escape). He has a live arm, but doesn't power the ball, but rather lofts it in with touch. Very nice traits for a rookie, but we won't really know his development trajectory until next preseason.

6) The third CB position is still wide open. Justin Coleman had an awful game. The NE second round pick, Cyrus Jones, had a good game overall but just isn't quite ready for a starting role. Both will make the roster, but the position is in flux.

7) It's Only the Preseason Dept: Last week an undrafted CB, Cre'von LeBlanc, made a sensational, one-handed interception in the endzone. This week he lost his man in the endzone on the last play of the game, giving up a touchdown.

8) I'm still not a believer in any of the NE RBs, despite the box score. Dion Lewis is very good, but he is not durable. Blount is one-dimensional, and is barely "OK" rather than good at that dimension. Gaffney still hasn't impressed me ("OK" power, "OK" moves and vision, nothing exceptional at either). With NE deep at Center, WR and TE, perhaps someone deep at RB will agree to a trade.

Is Dak Prescott the steal of the draft? Seems to me he was not well served by the MSU coaching staff who basically just relied on his athleticism. He is making nice throws and running like a deer when he has the chance. And he's actually making some nice reads.
