look at the bright side, at least there won't be any big bubba waiting for him in his N. Korean jail cell. Jared from Subway would willing to swap place with this guy in a heart beat

It's no laughing matter. At least Jared will get three square meals and a cot to sleep in. If diplomacy fails, this kid will likely succumb to malnutrition and either die of exhaustion (from labor) or the unhygienic conditions that will undoubtedly befall him. Hopefully being a foreigner, he'll be treated better than all the other inmates and political prisoners in the gulags. However, with tensions mounting in the peninsula to unprecedented levels, it's unclear how the Norks will respond. They'll probably want meetings with the UN Security Council as well as easing of the embargoes that are currently gripping their faltering economy.

What 15 years of 'hard labor' means in North Korea [foreignpolicy.com]:

Quote:
"Eating a diet of mostly corn and salt, they lose their teeth, their gums turn black, their bones weaken and, as they age, they hunch over at the waist," read the report, according to the Washington Post. "Most work 12- to 15-hour days until they die of malnutrition-related illnesses, usually around the age of 50. Allowed just one set of clothes, they live and die in rags, without soap, socks, underclothes or sanitary napkins."

Yeah, sounds like fun; your honor, I'll take the American prison option, thank you very much...

This guy should've known better than to disrespect another country's rules and laws. Especially a tyrannical country like N. Korea. He can't just do as he pleases. I feel bad for the end result but that's what you get for acting like an idiot.

Look a college student is likely to be in big college debt for 15 years, so what if he has to spend that time in hard labor? Maybe he can campaign for Bernie while he is living on 600 calories a day in a gulag.

stealing a poster does not justify 15 years of hard labor. Stupid decision by otto...yes, but the punishment does not fit the crime. North Koreans are cold heartless people.

Pretty sure they only do what the Kim family tells them what to do. Remember he got rid of his uncle using an anti-aircraft gun.

Apparently efforts to release Warmbier are being made.

Quote:
“An unfortunate development but a familiar pattern with American detainees,” Mr. Richardson said in an email. “Hopefully a prelude to negotiations that might lead to a release on humanitarian grounds.”

His reason for stealing the poster were monetary and stupid. Him saying he made the worst mistake of his life is a understatement.

Quote:
Late last month, Mr. Warmbier sobbed and pleaded for his release at a government-arranged news conference in Pyongyang, where he admitted stealing the poster and said that the church member had offered to buy him a used car worth $10,000 in exchange. “I made the worst mistake of my life,” Mr. Warmbier said.

I have little sympathy. Anyone who steps foot into North Korea needs to own up to the incredible risk they are taking and the US government shouldnt have to negotiate and give concessions to a madman every time some idiot does this.

North Korea is not the place to pull a fraternity prank or whatever he was doing. Honestly, it is a harsh sentence but sometimes the herd needs to be thinned. Maybe he can write a book about it.

It sucks, but this about sums it up.

Reminds me of that American kid in the 90s in Singapore who was caned for vandalizing cars. He happened to pick the right effin country to mess up in, that's the brutally harsh difference.

I hope this at least serves as a warning for Americans to NOOOOOOOT go to places like North Korea and I-ran. I still feel bad for that young woman who was rayp't repeatedly (you can BET with fervor) and was later killed in the Middle East (aka Earth's rectum). It just ain't worth it. But we all know these stories will not end. Collective shoulder shrug.

I really do feel for this lad, regardless of how he played around with his life with the decisions he made (No. 1, going there in the first place). This is the kind of punishment that Van Der Sloot creep should get. Life...unfairness...you know how the equation works.

Something like this was going to happen with NK's diplomatic channels breaking down the last few years. Ever since the assassination of KJU's uncle & older brother, relations with not just the US but with China have been shut down. NK sees its nuclear program as their only salvation toward international relevancy and unless they change that worldview (impossible) international relations will only worsen.

Try fathoming Kim Jong-uh's reasoning.

He sees nations with nuclear capability as those whose voice is heard. Those possessing that offense are not in fear of being attacked.

Look at countries that have troops on the ground, fighting in their streets. They are not nuclear capable, no nuclear threat.

Kim's gotten to the point where he's not even listening to China.

President Theodore Roosevelt's "Walk softly and carry a big stick," comes to mind.

Kim is vying to have a big stick but he's definitely not walking softly.

This is sad but again hard to feel sorry for such foolishness. This is on par with breaking into a double gated lion's den and then pulling on the lion's tail. The USA is trying to stop North Korea from developing a ballistic nuclear missle system that could potentially nuke the west coast. Cant afford to waste much diplomatic capital trying to negotiate the release of people who go out their way to visit there and get in trouble for whatever reason.

If somebody is willing to kill their relatives to get power, they aren't exactly of sound mind.

What credit does Trump get in all this? If there's a guy who deserves credit it's Joe Yun and the State Dept. who worked this over several months for his release. Norks panicked when their negotiation chip fell half-dead after subjecting him to hard labor and torture, they knew killing him in captivity would've raised the threat-levels on the peninsula so they had to release him shortly prior to his last moments of clinging to life. If anything, this proves that there's little hope for diplomacy with Norks and we'll all be better when that pig in charge is deposed.

For all the comments here bashing his stupidity, we don't even know if he actually did try to steal the poster, or was coerced into saying he did for political purposes.

I was hard on this kid for being so stupid on his North Korean "vacation" but it is obvious he was treated brutally by North Korea.

Sorry for his parents and friends, don't deserve to die for a stupid decision.

I saw a video of it when it first happened and it did look like he was stealing it or ripping it down for some reason.

Still a ridiculous reason to be detained, much less killed. But you have to know where you are.
