I think they should have checked him for brain damage before he flew to North Korea.

They have a long, sordid history of imprisoning American tourists. I get the exotic vacation angle, but this makes as much sense as throwing buckets of blood into the water and then snorkeling in great white shark infested waters.

basically murdered for stealing a poster.. what the hell is wrong with North Korea?? so terrible.

kudos to trump for getting him back.

What did Trump have to do with him getting released?

It's obvious the North Koreans were anxious to deport the kid, they knew damn well the kid was dying. That was behind the timing; releasing a corpse is bad PR, even by North Korean standards.

Docked in S Korea on the way to Japan when I was in the Navy. No one was allowed to go ashore. We refueled and took off.

I hope Americans get the message, N Korea is not a place to visit. What's the novelty?

People are speculating as to what the NKs did to him. IMO, I think the young man tried to kill himself, wasn't quite successful, and end up with irreversible brain damage. It happens. That being said...

Let this be a lesson to the young, white and privileged. Your card isn't good everywhere. Here, you do something stupid, you tell the court how sorry you are with big ole tears in your eyes and the judge pats you on the head and flicks you on the wrist. But those big crocodile tears mean nothing to a Kim Jung Un. So...that's all I have to say about that.

I saw a video of it when it first happened and it did look like he was stealing it or ripping it down for some reason.

Still a ridiculous reason to be detained, much less killed. But you have to know where you are.

If I recall correctly, there was no way to tell whether it was actually him. Could have been a setup.

He admitted to it in court. Page 1 in this thread.

Washington (AP) -- Sen. John McCain said Tuesday that Americans who are "stupid" enough to still want to travel to North Korea should be required to sign a waiver absolving the U.S. government of any blame should they be harmed while there.

Rumor has it that McCain knows something about incarceration in a hostile foreign prison. That's how North Koreans treat American tourists, not necessarily as POWs, but rather as pawns in a game to gain diplomatic concessions. That's why they will continue to imprison Americans for any crimes, real or imagined.
