The Final Stretch… A patchwork Memphis lineup vs. the Lakers with Kobe returning to the starting lineup. This one seemed like a win from start to finish.
They got off to 9-0 start with much better spacing offensively. They traded baskets for most of the game and then pulled out to a 10-point lead in the third quarter behind Kobe and Clarkson.
They stumbled a bit, nearly gave up the lead but they came through down the stretch with the guards working with their bigs for a series of scores by Bass and Randle. They closed out the Grizzlies with the 107-100 win.
The Lakers were able to survive a 20+ turnover game by shooting 50.6% for the game. It was a well-rounded team effort.
Just a few weeks and a dozen games left as the Lakers jockey for lottery position and say goodbye to No. 24.
Kobe -- -- He warned up as the game went along. Slow start for Kobe, making just 1-7 in the first half. The one make he did knock down, he tried to pass, flubbed it and swished a three. That’s kind of how the half went for him, just a bit out of sync in the first half. “I had to get my sea legs,” Kobe said. In the third quarter, he picked it up with a couple of three-point plays and a few other scores (12 points in the quarter). Strong second half that kept Memphis from overtaking the team. That post game just ate Memphis up. “My shoulder feels great,” Kobe said afterward. Nine years ago tonight, he scored 60 against the Grizzlies. His fifth highest scoring game. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-18 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He missed a wing pull-up jumper, his first shot in 5+ minutes. He’d have a flurry of shots shortly later. He backed his man down and missed the baseline turnaround. He missed a baseline jumper. He missed a wing three a few seconds later. He missed a reverse in early offense. He fumbled a swing pass, then decided to swish the wing three instead. He missed a three next time down. He swiped a post entry pass, pushed it out and threw it right back to the Grizzlies. He fumbled a ball away, shotclock violation. Nice close out on Farmar to force the airball. He had 3 points on 1-7 shooting. Second Half: He missed the baseline turnaround. He swished a wing three (looked like he almost had a toe on the line). He posted up Allen and hit the elbow And-1 turnaround, he made the FT. He missed a jumper, got it back, missed a three, we got it back to him again and he scored the layup. He backed his man down and swished the turnaround. He backed Barnes down and sank another turnaround. He missed a flat turnaround after returning to the game. He sank a wing three and wanted the And-1 (that definitely had his toe on the three line and they reviewed it to give him a two). He drew FTs on a three straight away, he made all three. He missed a wing jumper up against the shotclock.
Clarkson -- -- Good third quarter by Clarkson, overshadowed a little bit by Kobe’s 12 points that quarter. But Clarkson also helped the team extend to as big as a 10-point lead that quarter. After he sat, the lead was cut to just 3 heading into the fourth. Good seeing both Russell and Clarkson “miraculously” bounce back after we pull Metta from the starting lineup and replace him with a threat (Kobe). A couple turnovers in the final minutes (one an 8-second violation bringing the ball up court). But other than that a very steady game from Clarkson, including knocking down a couple of threes. His only assist came in the final minute, a nice one to Bass on the drive and dish. He and Nick had to take some questions after the game on the recent harassment issue. Clarkson described it as a “miscommunication” and they brushed off a lot of the direct questions. Neither were particularly eloquent in handling it and the organization seems to be backing up their version of what took place and I assume their intent. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-13 shooting (2-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 2 steal, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He attacked from the wing and hit a runner off glass over the help D. He swished a three off a handoff in early offense. He was called for an offensive foul, clearing a man out on the perimeter with his off hand. He was stripped as he tried to go up for a floater. He airballed a pull-up jumper. He attacked off the high screen and flipped in the layup with his left. He missed a pull-up three. He had 7 points on 3-5 shooting. Second Half: He ball-faked, missed the elbow jumper, then just choked the point-blank putback attempt. He missed a short one trying to create (no passing that possession). He attacked to his left and scored the layup. He swished a wing three off the quick feed from Randle. He sank a pull-up at the elbow (I think he wanted the And-1). He drew FTs on a loose ball, he made both. He took an outlet, attacked with speed and scored the layup. He attacked and hit the runner in the lane. Very nice D on Stephenson who tried to iso on him and we got the turnover. He wasn’t paying attention to the clock and had an 8-second violation with 3 and a half minutes left. He attacked with the shotclock low, got deep and passed to Bass at the last second for the reverse. He coughed up a dribble in a crowd, but hustled back and swiped the pass in transition more FTs, he made both with 22 seconds left. He swiped another pass to ice the game.
Russell -- -- He banged legs in the first half and went down. After playing for half of the third quarter, Vitti had him go to the locker room for treatment. He looked pretty fluid out there, so it was just being uber cautious with nothing on the line in these games. Russell led the Lakers in scoring in the first half, doing a good job working the post again for scores and also some nice off-ball cuts. So limited minutes tonight, limited his action, but he looked much more comfortable than with the MWP starting lineups. Defensively, he was strong against the PG spot, but it didn’t seem like anyone guarded Tony Allen when they were matched up with him. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a wing jumper off the two-man game (Hibbert cleaned it up). He posted up, kept his dribble alive, spun around his man baseline and scored the layup (very nice). He took a high post pass, with his back to his man spun to the baseline, rose up and sank the And-1 jumper, he made the FT. He missed a quick-fire wing three. His perimeter pass was deflected and swiped for points the other way. He sank a wing jumper in early offense. Great baseline cut when Carter was ballwatching and Huertas bounced it to him for the two-handed, over-the-head reverse by Russell. He caught pass in transition, turned and swished the Dirk fade on the baseline. He didn’t hit rim on the pull-up three in transition. He dropped to the level of the ball and used his length to swipe a pass. He blew a rebound/one-handed putback layup he should have had. He banged knees hard on a double team and lost the ball. He threw a pass away trying to thread it to Clarkson in the lane. He led the Lakers with 11 points on 5-9 shooting, but had 3 turnovers. Second Half: He missed a layup cutting baseline off Kobe.
Randle -- -- No. 30 got his 30th double-double tonight. Great all-around box score with assists and blocked shots, as well in this one. Offensively, it was mostly garbage points and opportunistic buckets. Good passing game from Randle. He can occasionally put some smoke on a perimeter pass that catches the D off guard and allows for an open look for one of the guards. He looked very strong in the post D (strength-wise) as Randolph tried to back him down and overpower him when they matched up. Julius didn’t budge. No rookie muscles on Jules. He got popped in the face/eye in the fourth quarter and was in some pain. “Just got a little of a headache, but I’m all right,” he said. Good job by the young Laker trio tonight. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-8 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 14 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a baseline jumper off an inbounds pass. He pushed out a rebound, took two big steps in the paint and banked in the shot straight away. He missed a fade after probing across the lane. He drop-stepped, hung and banked the layup. He had 4 points on 2-4 shooting, 8 boards and 3 assists. Second Half: He cleaned up a miss with a putback. He cleaned up a missed Russell layup. He tipped in a defensive board accidentally. He lost the dribble on the other end. He held his ground on Randolph’s attack and stripped the ball off him. He fired a bullet to Clarkson for the wing three. He rejected a layup, then got wacked in the head hard. Up against the clock, he attacked to his right, went up and under on Barnes and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT (big make with 4 minutes left). He cut down the middle of the lane, took the pass from Lou who was under the hoop and finished around the D with his left.
Hibbert -- -- Good job on the offensive boards tonight. He looked a little livelier than usual in getting to the front of the rim and good things happened. We were better with Bass out there but serviceable minutes by Hibbert. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He grabbed a missed jumper after rolling to the hoop and put it back in. He missed an open wing jumper. He drew FTs working the post, he made both. Second Half: He grabbed an offensive board and found Kobe for the layup.
Williams -- -- Steady game from Lou. The second unit had MWP out there, so that might have slowed their mojo a little. Lou can always find ways to score. I think he wanted a couple more whistles than he got. Those make for the occasional bad looking chuck, but you have to live with those with his abilities to draw FTs and help get the other team in the penalty. Rare game for him, however, where he didn’t lead the bench in scoring. “One of those games where the ball is hopping around,” Lou said. “For whatever reason, whenever we make shots, we seem to play with more energy, we seem to play with more passion.” The Stats: He scored 13 points on 3-10 shooting (2-6 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He drained a frozen-rope three straight away. He drew FTs on a drive in early offense, he made one. He drained a wing three on the catch and shoot. He choked a layup on the pass over the D from Huertas. He threw a post entry away, but got the ball back on the other end by standing in to take a charge in transition. He had 7 points on 2-3 shooting. Second Half: He drew FTs on a wing jumper in early offense, he made both. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a deep three. He missed a wing jumper on a cross-over. He missed a wing three, great cut after that and Black found him for the layup. He missed a wing three in transition. He missed a chuck from three hoping for the whistle that didn’t come. He probed baseline and found Randle for the layup. He missed a wild runner next time down.
Bass -- -- Your leading bench scorer. He had a series of big scores in the final minutes as his guards looked for him around the rim and for the jumper. That helped seal the deal. Those killed the Grizzlies. He has consistently outplayed Roy at the C spot this game, yet that’s the one lineup change the team has yet to make for any amount of time. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He threw a kickout away. He faked a jumper, attacked down the lane and hit the runner. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Marcelo, he made both. He dunked off the interior pass from Black. Nice job tapping a post entry pass to himself to save it from being stolen and he scored at the rim. He had 8 points on 3-4 shooting and 2 boards. Second Half: He attacked in the post and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a running three at the buzzer. He overpowered Barnes in the post out of a timeout. He tried to iso on Randolph and had the ball stripped off him. He threw down the lob from Huertas. He rattled down an open baseline jumper next time down when Huertas found him again. He reversed with both hands off an interior feed.
Black -- -- He might make Shaqtin’ a Fool with his inbounds roll pass that was stolen, which he then he gave up an And-1 layup on a second later. Ouch. Not even that could derail the Lakers win tonight. The Lakers struggled to control the defensive glass a little bit when he and Bass were in there together in the first half. It was better in the second half. Black looked a little more active in that half. I always think he plays better when he’s given consistent minutes. He’s just not able to quite get into a flow on either end when playing every once in a while. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: Lazy screen as Lou looped to the strong side to take a pass, turnover. Moving screen, sloppy roll to the hoop. Nice interior feed to Bass for a dunk. Second Half: He tried to roll an inbounds to Lou, but Memphis swiped it and Black fouled for an And-1, painful. He grabbed an offensive board then found Lou cutting backdoor on his man for a layup.
Huertas -- -- “Towards the end of the game, we knew how to find open shots,” Huertas said. That was key. A lot of good work by all the guards finding their bigs in crunch time. The game had moments of iso ball, but to close the game the team was very unselfish. Love the sequence where he no-looked to Russell for a score in the first half. The ball was moving for multiple quick-strike opportunities in that set and eventually the D was caught being concerned about Huertas and Russell snuck backdoor. Good ball movement creates more opportunities for a breakdown like that. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He found Bass at the FT line (who then attacked and scored). He drew an offensive foul fighting through a moving screen on D. He attacked in transition and overpassed instead of trying to finish the layup (Bass drew FTs under the hoop). He missed a wing three on a kickout. He went under a screen and gave up the three to Farmar. He sank a baseline jumper on the catch and shoot. He attacked the lane, Russell cut backdoor and Huertas no-looked to him for the layup. He hit Russell a couple steps late on the break, but Russell turned and swished the baseline fade. He led the team with 5 assists in the first half. Second Half: A little off the mark on a perimeter jump pass, turnover. Quick attack and he drew FTs on the hack, he made both. He lobbed to Bass for the dunk. He found Bass for the open jumper next time down.
World Peace -- -- A little Ron Artest action tonight as he picked up two T’s and was ejected in the fourth quarter. He was irked with a no call that had him tied up on the floor after getting his foot stepped on. He kind of brushed an official in his anger at the first tech. That got him the second tech. Glad we got him out of the starting lineup. That was beyond awful. Some good D when he came in late in the third quarter. He had his moments on that end of the floor but little else tonight. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He stripped his man on the perimeter. Nice attempt on an awkward inbounds lob trying to beat the shotclock (just missed it with 0.8 on the clock). He posted up and hit the turnaround. Second Half: He missed a sideline three. He attacked baseline and his runner was wedged into the rim for a jumpball. He iso’d, fell and was tied up (he was ticked he didn’t get the foul call and then picked up a two T’s and was ejected.)
Scott -- -- With Kobe in the starting lineup instead of Metta, the Lakers got off to a 9-0 start, forcing a timeout… Scored tied when Lou came in for Russell, Bass in for HIbbert midway through the quarter… The Lakers were up 17-16 when Huertas, Metta and Black came in for Randle, Clarkson and Kobe all at once… They were tied 25-25 after the first quarter… Same Black, Bass, Metta, Lou, Huertas lineup… Down 3, he brought back in Russell for Lou with 9 minutes left… Kobe in for Metta, Randle for Black with 7 minutes left, Lakers up 2… Lakers up 2 when he brought back in Clarkson for Huertas midway through the quarter… The Lakers led 48-47 at the half. The Lakers shot 50% from the floor, but had 14 turnovers… Too many turnovers, but otherwise a steady first half… Offensively, very stagnant with a lot of iso… The Lakers led by 1 when the timeout come midway through the quarter… Lakers up 2 when Lou came in for Russell… Metta in for Kobe, Lakers up 4… Allen now 11-11 in the game… Bass and Black in for Randle and Hibbert, Lakers up 4… Lakers up 10 when Huertas came in for Clarkson, who was having a strong third quarter… Bad close to the quarter by the Lakers, a 7-0 Memphis run in 1 minute… The Lakers led 81-78 heading into the fourth… He started the Black, Bass, Metta, Lou, Huertas lineup again… Kobe back in when Metta was tossed… Randle in for Black with 9 minutes left… Clarkson for Huertas… He sat Kobe with 4:20 left for Huertas, Lakers up 6… The Lakers moved the ball well and closed the Grizzlies out… |

Thanks!
Th very first basket was just hilarious.
Th rebound fell on Hibberts lap, and he just could not figure out what just happened and what he should do. Thought about it for a second, then put it in the basket.
That probably set the tone for the full game. _________________ .

Another lesson learned for all the young players
Team showed that with an uber player to make shots at SF, they will be a dangerous team. |

Or that it's nice to play a hobbled team with basically 3-4 D League guys in the rotation in a back-to-back.
But I do agree that getting a lead scorer will help our young guys big time. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

I really liked Russell's off the ball moves/cuts. He was doing great until he got hurt. I hope he's okay. |
