He has to be a Karl Malone type of PF/offensive player (face-up/catch and shoot/get to the line) to ever be considered a good player. As his jumper improves, defenders will crowd him and he'll blow by them. Just like Malone, people aren't gonna take charges from this speeding truck, not more than once at least. A Malone like mean streak wouldn't hurt either. |
Actually, he has shown good low-post skills when he calms down and backs his man down (and doesn't force it). He SHOULD be a low-post player, but he's just more comfortable facing up. Maybe he'll get used to being a back-to-the-basket guy, eventually. _________________ "In essence, the trade was: Shaq, Rick Fox and Gary Payton for Odom, Kwame, Mihm, Profit, 2nd round picks, a 1st round pick and 30 million in luxury tax saviings." - LakerJam

As some have already noted, there ARE drills one can do to improve hand-eye coordination. It can definitely be improved, sometimes dramatically. As for why kwame has stone hands -- the same reason he flubs easy lay-ups: he's thinking too much, as opposed to simply doing. Sometimes, that can be the result of not putting in enough work: usually, you do the simple drills (shooting, cattching the ball, shooting lay-ups with eaither hands, defending) until they become hard-wired into your muscle memory. In other words, the movements are repeated so much that they become second nature. You want to get to the point where your body knows what to do in a given situation, without your conscious brain having to tell it what to do. Kwame isn't there yet. Like I said, could be he doesn't put in the required reps or ....
He has some psychological issues which prevent him from relaxing enough to just let himself be in the moment. Sometimes, all the work in the world won't be enough if one has also hard-wired into one's system either an incessant inner critic (e.g., "you can't do anything right") or maybe a fear of failure (e.g., don't screw this up or the sky will fall"). The problem is that one's mind becomes preoccupied with the negative message, which occupies the conscious and unconscious mind to the point where one can't perform a simple task (like catching a ball) because one's anxiety levels regarding one's ability to perform are off the charts.
Kwame definitely has the body and the ability to excel. He lacks either the fundamentals (either through bad coaching or lack of work) or he has to break free of whatever psychological issues make him so uptight. The coaching is easy to address: I, for one, think he should be working daily with Jabbar. No reason in the world not to learn post play from perhaps the greatest post-player of all time. NONE. Second, he really should see a shrink. If some of the stories about Kwame's upbringing are true (specifically, that he may have been psysically abused as a child) then he needs to talk those issues out with someone so that he can get some perspective on them, figure out how they affect him to this day, and see if there is a productive way to address them. This may not work, or it may take a long time, but the sooner he starts the better. SOMETHING is going on with him psychologically. (And no, I'm not an expert, but it doesn't take one to see that he's got some mental blocks holding him back.)

The answer is: It's a disease that starts with the head and rapidly progresses to the hands. Odom should get a checkup, as he is showing early signs. |

I think it mostly physical and a natural gift. If you don't have it as a child, you won't have it as an adult. |

Well having stone hands isn't the worst thing that could happen... what if you were impotent?
