Two of the main complains I had last year are being handled: our defense is WAAAAY better (we can improve, still) and his hockey subs are gone. His rotations are far from good, but he's mixing players from 1st and 2nd unit, and had shortened rotations. What was down right terrible, now is simply bad.

But, we still have a couple of issues he should address if he wants to be there for year 3:

- Stubbornness: once he gets a fixed idea in his mind, no practical result will move him. He insists in playing Nance and Lopez as starters, although the team was clearly better with Kuzma starting and Randle is playing great. We can go on with many things we think "why Luke doesn't change that?" and come up with Stubbornness as the answer. It's good when you have a clear vision and you stick to it, but it's wise to recognize when that vision is flawed.

- Staff: we clearly lack some important pieces in the staff: shooting coach, an X's and O's guy, a defensive specialist. His main assistants are copycats of himself and bring nothing different to the table. He should look for assistants who complete him.

I was all aboard for hiring Luke. He was actually my first choice. But the train is coming to a stop and I think I want to get off. I see what Brad Stevens does with little talent and just wonder what he'd do with our team. I'm keeping my eye on Shaka Smart cause it always seemed like him and Brad Stevens were cut from the same cloth.

Honest question for those that remember, Del Harris or Luke? Cant remember Del having issues with his rotations.

Both took over young inexperienced teams, NVE and Eddie hadn’t reached their potential yet, we had some vets then like we have now. But that team grew under Del and became playoff caliber; Shaq came the season after they made the playoffs and made a good run.

Can this team show growth under Luke similarly? I’m hoping we see it this season but Luke has made some glaring mistakes so far. I wouldn’t think the playoffs are a requirement but the team needs to improve their win rate.

Those teams had way lesser top talent/picks but way scrappier and much more heart. I remember a NVE led team giving the Spurs a run for their money. Where Del underachieved is when they brought in Shaq and all that other talent. Luke is underachieving with this roster given the improvements of BI, Clarkson, Randle, and additions of Lopez, KCP, Ball, and Kuzma.

Harris was an excellent hire for The Lake Show era team.

I can’t remember his rotations, but I do remember him benching Sedale Threat in favor of Nick Van Exel from the onset. Van Exel never came off the bench for the Lakers, even though Threat was clearly the seasoned vet.

The team wasn’t as young either. Vlade, Campbell, and Ceballos were quite mature (maybe in their mid twenties).

Off my head the team looked like this:

PG - Van Exel - Threat
SG - Jones - Peeler
C - Divac - Strong
PF - Campbell - Lynch
SF - Ceballos - (Jones/Lynch)

Hard for Harris to mess up rotations on a team where the top five or six guys is clearly defined. On this team, in Walton’s defense, not so much.

I agree as well, but there were quite a few of us who were skeptical of the hire because of his lack of experience. I was just wary that so many people had fallen in love with Luke so quickly over a tiny sample size. All you can hope for is progress from year to year and I think our defense has made a 180. Still a lot of room for improvement though. I'd feel a lot better if we had an x/o guru.

What do guys think of this team being coached by D’antoni? How many games could they win?

Randle - Has shown the ability to anchor an entire defense. I haven’t seen a player with his strength and mobility in a very long time. His rim protection has also gotten ALOT better. Based on his defense alone i consider him a top 3 prospect on this team. There is no center that can pubish him on the block, even then we have long versatile players to double. Watch out when you miss Dmarcus cousin or marc gasol because randle is a bullet shot of a canon and with a team constructed to run and gun he will easily average 20-10 once he gets confortable.

Kuzma - Mr. Buckets: He can do it all. 3pt, transition, post ups, screen and roll, you mention it. Clear cut starter.

Ingram - #1 prospect for his ability to isolate. His ability to close out games will be huge you can never have enough options in the last minutes of a game. He has to be more aggressive on transition and push the ball more. Should be starting due to hus two way game.

KCP: Defense but he shouldn’t be getting more than 30 mins a night. he will be gone this summer its time for development. Long as we keep playing these old players we will never give our young players (russell or even randle) time to show what they truly are instead of forcing them to be something thwy are not.

Ball: Everyone knew ball has no half court game which is why a run and gun offense would work better instead of ball dumping the ball to lopez wvery time. He is legit as tbhey come but look at nash, jkid all these guys had teams tailored to them.... the game is not even fun when you are playing next to nance and lopez they clearly cant hold their own.

6th man: Love his offense, needs to shoot more 3s and distribute more.

Luke: what a mess. Terrible coach.

I like Luke better. His young team is playing defense.

Antoni teams never play D and get washed out in the playoffs as a result. The O will get better as the staff gets more time to implement their system. Luke said that all of the shortened pre-season was spent on D. The D is great for a young team. We all knew that the offense was a work in progress at the start of the year due to the shortened pre-season and the focus on D in said shortened pre-season.

The O will get better.

Hardly any team plays defense anymore and this team is still a long ways away from being an elite defensive team. That's the narrative but if you actually watch the games, you'd be scratching your head about that "much improved defense."

Forgive my ignorance, but please tell me that by saying the Lakers don’t have a shooting coach you mean they “don’t have an experienced one”.

It was 18th last year, it's 5th this year.

Note, our defense has fallen off the last 4 games.

Ever since Larry was inserted back into the starting lineup we've scored 108 Ppg, but given up 120 ppg(as well as them shooting 48% against us and 38% from three)

Prior to that (post Portland game)

We scored 106 ppg but only gave up 106.9 ppg and held opponents to 44% from the field but most importantly, 31% from three.

Lakers have given up 120 PPG since Nance re-inserted into the starting lineup

https://www.reddit.com/r/lakers/comments/7htp6j/lakers_have_given_up_120_ppg_since_nance/

Think Luke cares about those numbers? Doubt it.

Rockets are the #5 defensive team this year.

Oh you with your facts! LOL- but Antoni did get rolled quick in the playoffs last season. What was their D ranking last season?

Doubt it.

Or maybe he saw GSW and HOU on the stat sheet.

Jeeze, how devoid of context can this agenda get...

Also giving up 120 to the Clippers, 113 to the Kings, and 115 to the Nuggets. Warriors was 127 and Rockets was 118.

There isn't an agenda behind facts.

And in two of those Randle played like dog (bleep). (Unless we're pretending Kuzma's a defensive juggernaut, that's the only relevance).

LOL and 115 to Philly + 122 to Phoenix right before that. I guess you can blame Larry for hanging around the practice facility for those too.

It's also interesting how that suddenly stout defensive stretch when Larry was out was mostly against Eastern conference teams.

When we hired Luke last year, I said he need at least 2 years to show what he's got. We took a risk in hiring a rookie coach, so he should be given time to learn, as any other rookie.

Forgive my ignorance, but please tell me that by saying the Lakers don’t have a shooting coach you mean they “don’t have an experienced one”.

If there is a shooting coach, most people don’t know who he is and he’s doing a bad job.

I think our offense has fallen since the guys are trying some newer things on offense. Or they're just being dump on defense.

Last 4 games: (our ortg and drtg)

Clips: 108.9, 114.1
Rocks: 88.6, 111.9
Warriors: 106.0, 109.2
Nuggets: 100.8, 112.4

Season: 99.5, 102.9

Besides that crappy rockets game, the offense was doing better. And the defense has has been slipping.

In a few games we'll be dead last in the Western conference and 3rd worst team in all NBA.

It's obvious now that Luke simply doesnt give a (bleep) about the analytics and will stubbornly stick to what he first thought of until it's too late.
