Just Two Left … You kept waiting for the Rockets to get separation in this game. When would it come? When would the Lakers be blown out yet again?
The Rockets couldn’t shake the Lakers early as Kobe went off for 15 points in the first quarter. The Laker second unit, led by Huertas and a lot of team defensive energy, followed that up and battled to a small lead. The Kobe-less starting unit came back to close that half, struggled, but closed strong to trail by just 2 at the halftime. The Lakers kept it together.
In the second half, the turnovers caught up with them. The Rockets pressured them just enough and the Lakers quickly trailed by double digits. Still, they trimmed it back to just 2 points after a couple of early threes in the fourth quarter.
Then it happened. Both teams were knocking down threes, but the Rockets were relentless and too much Harden eventually did them in. The Lakers fell 130-110.
At least Kobe put on a show offensively. His 35 points were an impressive display of perimeter shooting, craftiness to draw fouls and getting to the rim.
With the Rockets battling the Jazz for a playoff spot, the Lakers likely won’t have any pushovers to close the season. Not that it matters. They got thumped by an injury depleted D-League looking Pelican roster. The Rockets weren’t going to be much easier. The Rockets scored 42 points in the fourth.
The Lakers could end up with 66 losses this year. Amazingly awful. It may take the Warriors 5 years to suffer through that many losses.
Kobe -- -- I doubt Dwight gets cheered as loudly as Kobe was when he sat with 35 points and the “Kobe’s” rained down. Nice job by the Laker fans that represented. Kobe gave them a show, some vintage Mamba. Great start again to this one as he scored on a mix of shots to get to double digits in the first quarter (15 points playing the first 12 minutes…his highest scoring first quarter of the season). Ariza shadowing him all quarter, even playing ball denial D. Kobe sat the entire second quarter. In the third, he heated up as the quarter went along and scored another 14 points. He was able to draw some fouls from three in the fourth when he returned. Old man taking his buddy Ariza to school. The Stats: He scored 35 points on 10-22 shooting (4-11 from three, 11-11 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He missed a sideline three. He spun abound his man and used his body well to shield the help D for the layup. He then sank a wing three in transition next time down. He missed a baseline turnaround net time down. He couldn’t finish a layup around Dwight, getting body checked with no call. He iso’d, spun into a Dirk fade and swished (looking for the And-1, too). He drew a foul on Harden from behind on a three, he made all three FTs. He missed an open three. He threw a pass out of bounds. He sank a deep three in early offense. He blew past Ariza’s tight perimeter D and drew FTs at the rim, he made both FTs with 0.6 left. He had 15 points on 4-8 shooting. Second Half: He missed a high-arching fade. He stepped on the sideline, turnover. He missed a wing three. Change of pace in semi-transition and he scored a layup. He drained a deep wing three next time down. He missed an open wing jumper, shoould have gone for the short bank. He reversed on a nice change of ends in transition and wanted the And-1 as he ended up on the floor. He drained a wing jumper with a man all over him. He missed a forced three. He couldn’t finish a layup after backdooring his man down the middle of the lane. He hit a jumphook in the middle of the lane after sealing his man to take the pass. He got space on Ariza on a pull-back dribble on iso at the end of the quarter and sank the deep three at the end of the quarter. He drew three FTs on a reach by Ariza, he made all three. He missed a three, stole it back and drew FTs on another three, he made all three again. He missed a three in transition, he should have passed off or attacked on after a nice steal. He lost Ariza on the Shamgod/Bodiroga move, but then lost it shortly later trying to get around the help D.
Clarkson -- -- Some big threes to start the fourth quarter and cut an 8-point lead to 2. Very good fourth offensively as he ended up with 21 points. He and Huertas looked very comfortable together in their roles, Clarkson the shooter, Huertas the traditional PG. He got the Harden assignment to start with Russell picking him up when he sat. They kept Harden to 13 points on 14 shots in the first half. Yet Harden would end up with 40 points, destroying them in that fourth quarter. He seemed very controlled offensively in this one. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 9-17 shooting (3-8 from three) to go with 8 boards, 4 assists, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He missed a three on a kickout. He busted out on the jumpball and scored the layup. He got tapped on a wing three. Too hard on the lob pass on the break. He missed an open corner three. No perimeter boxout on his man on a missed FT and we gave up a second-chance three (5-point possession). He scored a layup when Randle found him cutting. He took on three defenders in transition and scored the layup with a change of pace. He was swatted on a layup (should have gone to the floater). He nearly threw a behind-the-back pass away to Randle on the break, but he grabbed it and threw down the And-1 dunk. Second Half: He missed an open wing three. He missed a floater over Howard, but finished with the putback follow tip (very nice…just threw it over Howard and went and got it). He swished a floater in transition. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He scored a layup on the bounce pass from Russell between defenders on the break. He swished a sideline three on the kickout from Huertas. He came off the double screen and drained a three moving to his left. He missed an open wing three. He drained a three out of a timeout.
Russell -- -- I’ve mentioned previously the complete lack of chemistry with Hibbert on offense in the two-man game. In the first half, you saw two turnovers from Russell trying to run that with Hibbert. The first time, he threw the pass behind Hibbert who was actually rolling, the next time he threw it ahead of Hibbert when he wasn’t rolling. Just little to no chemistry between the two, combine that with a charge and a bad pass under the hoop and he had 4 turnovers in the first half. Different pace in this one. He was aggressive with the tempo the last game and got to the line 13 times. That’s huge (see James Harden). He sank a couple of threes, but wasn’t looking for his shot. Russell had to cover Harden when Clarkson sat. Tough assignment, although, he had a really good challenge on iso D staying all over him on one sequence. He was generally pretty decent on that end with 3 steals and some good rotations. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-5 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: Turnover trying to connect with Hibbert on the two-man game (actually threw it behind him maybe not expecting him to roll). He threw a pass away trying to thread it between defenders as the D converged on his drive. He posted up and missed the fade with 1 on the shotclock. He jumped a passing lane and swiped the ball. Hockey assist when he got doubled on the perimeter, it led to a dunk. Nice challenge on iso D on Harden to get a miss. This time too far ahead of Hibbert who was cemented in the ground on the screen-roll, turnover. He drew FTs filling the lane on the break with Randle, he made both. He charged on the break, not changing directions enough on the finish. He had 2 points on 0-1 shooting and 4 turnovers. Second Half: He drained a three off the dribble handoff from Randle. He intercepted a pass in transition and bounced a pass between defenders to Clarkson for the layup. Nice hustle in transition to save a hoop on a steal. Great rotation to help force a shotclock turnover. Sweet no-look bounce pass to Black down the lane for the slam. He set up Black for FTs on the bounce pass. He sank a three of a brush screen. He was blocked from behind on help D for a dunk the other way. He missed an off-balance corner three.
Randle -- -- Strong second quarter in this one, pushing the tempo more and using his speed to his advantage both there and in the halfcourt. That was his best stretch of ball and the Lakers looked like that might be part of their future identity. He wasn’t a factor on the boards with just 2 in the second half. He did a good job moving the ball and was looking to set teammates up more. That helps us from going into too much of the ball stopping iso offense. We just have one player too many trying to iso when he’s not facilitating. “James Harden got hot in the fourth,” Randle said, summarizing the game. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He found Hibbert for the open jumper. He threw a pass out of bounds trying to dish to Kobe. He stumbled on the drive and knocked his man down for a turnover. He sank an open wing jumper. He pushed out the break and hit Marcelo filling the lane for the score. He hit Clarkson cutting off the pinch post for the layup. Quick first step to his left to get around Smith and he scored the layup. Speedy push out and he fed Russell for FTs on the break. He missed the wing jumper. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made both. Great job getting down court, better job grabbing the pass behind him and even better And-1 dunk finish, he made the FT. He had 9 points, 5 boards and 3 assists. Second Half: He jumped the passing lane, knocked it down and jogged it to the other end for the dunk. He gave it right back losing the handle on the pushout next time down for a dunk the other way. He was blocked on a layup in transition. He missed a 19-footer. He bricked a three.
Hibbert -- -- Just another forgetful game from Hibbert. The only thing that stood out were some missed wide open shots and the lack of chemistry on the two-man game. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He popped out at the FT line and hit the jumper. He fumbled a pass that hit him in the hands, dunk the other way. He hit the floor for a loose ball on the defensive end. He clanked a short on in the paint. He missed a baseline jumper. He missed another from the same spot. Second Half: Not close on a force chuck on an inbounds pass to beat the shotclock. He was rejected by Howard as he tried to throwdown on him.
Nance -- -- The team played well with Larry and Tarik on the floor. Some good moments of D and we were generally always challenging shooters. Offensively, he probably should have had a couple more dunks in this game, but our passes were off the mark. He still had a nice lob and putback jam. I love it when he gets a chance to play above the rim. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He hit Black for a dunk off the two-man game with Russell. He tipped in the Kobe miss. He lost the dribble in the post and nearly stole it back in the backcourt, but couldn’t come up with it. He smothered Beasley on one end to force a turnover, then finished the short one in transition on the other. He dunked on the lob from Huertas working the sideline pick and roll. He got tapped on a corner three, to beat the shotclock. Second Half: He soared in to cram down a Huertas missed jumper.
Black -- -- Up against his former team, he played with a lot of energy and flow with that second unit. The offense looks much better when we have our bigs moving in it and the guards were certainly looking for him. He should have had double figures but the FT shooting is still an issue. Got to get up on those toes some. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-6 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 block and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He jammed off the interior feed from Nance. He blocked a drive on the other end. He dunked rolling to the hoop when Huertas found him. He up-faked, attacked the paint and hit the runner. Second Half: He slammed off the no-looker from Russell as Black ran the floor well. He drew FTs on a dunk when Russell found him rolling, he missed both. He was blocked in the paint but kept it alive.
Huertas -- -- He had 4 of the team’s 15 first half assists. So not just a good job by Huertas only in moving the ball in this one. The entire team joined him at times. Good job again on some of his defensive rotations and coverage. The second unit had some of the better moments defensively with the mobile bigs and perimeter players playing smart. We sat him hit a rare three out of a timeout in that fourth (at one point the Lakers were 6-7 from three that quarter). The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-9 shooting (1-1 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 7 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 25 minutes. He was +2. The Action: He up-faked on the pass off from Randle on the break and scored the layup. He threaded a long pass to a rolling Black for the dunk. He missed a tech FT, argh. Quick baseline attack off a ball reversal and he hit the baseline floater. He found Metta open for the corner three. He missed a baseline three. He spotted Nance in transition for the easy one in the paint. He ball-faked and missed the runner, we got it back to him and he lobbed to Nance for the dunk. Second Half: Nice advance pass to Kobe for a transition score. He whipped a pass crosscourt to Clarkson for three. He missed a wing jumper. He was tapped on a pull-up jumper at the FT line. He sank a three out of a timeout. Not close on a runner from 15 feet. He picked up his dribble and then hit the floater when he pivoted to lose his man.
Kelly -- -- He came in with a few minutes left in the first half to give Metta breather at SF as Kobe sat the second quarter. That was it. The Stats: He didn’t score and had 2 boards in 2 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: Nice rebound in a crowd. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.
World Peace -- -- The backup SF again. He did try to D-up Harden for a moment in the fourth quarter where Metta also sank a big three and posted up for a score. Good energy. The Rockets looked to help off him and he did sink a couple of threes. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He airballed a wide open corner three, uggh. He sank the next one on the same double-high sequence, just the opposite corner for him this time. Second Half: He drained a deep three straight away. He sank a fade after working the post. He missed a face-up jumper.
Scott -- -- Turnover-prone ball to start the game for the Lakers… Huertas in for Clarkson midway through the quarter. Timeout with the Lakers tied 13-13… Hibbert and Randle out for Nance and Black, down 3… The Lakers trailed 29-27 after the first quarter (Kobe with 15 points)… He started the Black, Nance, Metta, Clarkson, Huertas unit… Good defensive energy and they forced a timeout up by 3 after 3 minutes… Up 2 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. He sat Black, Nance and Huertas for Randle, Hibbert and Russell… Kelly instead of Kobe at SF to close out… They floundered a little but punched back with a strong close and some transition opportunities… They trailed 55-53. They shot 53% and had 15 assists on 20 makes. That tied a season-high for most assists of the half. They did have 12 turnovers, however… They started the second half with a number of turnovers again… They trailed by 12 midway through the quarter… Clarkson out for Huertas… The D picked up, they started to get out in transition and Kobe heated up some. They forced a timeout trimming the lead in half… Nance and Black in for Randle and Hibbert… Kobe starting to catch file… They trailed 88-80 heading into the fourth… He started the Black, Nance, Metta, Clarkson, Huertas lineup… They cut it to 2 quickly off a couple of threes… Timeout with 9:23 left down 2 after another three from Clarkson… Harden pushed back and the Lakers were down by 9 just 2 minutes left when the timeout came… The lead ballooned to 13 off some Rocket threes… He brought back in Kobe and Russell with 5 minutes left… Crazy back and forth three shooting by both teams. Lakers not able to keep up… |

1st. Today was a circus. That 4th quarter felt like the ASG, and I don't mean the caliber of players playing.
When Kobe took the 3 instead of passing for a layup...
Edit: Oops, obligatory thanks DB! |

That's all you got out of Kobe's performance?
The hate is real.
35 PTS, 2 steals on 45% FG, 11-11 FT%, 65% TS in 27 minutes

The hate? Kobe's been my favorite player as long as I can remember. But that 4th quarter was a clown show (not just because of him), and that shot was indefensible. I enjoyed his performance, but that shot is what stood out to me. Well that and both teams' utter disregard for playing any defense in the 4th. |

He isn't wrong. That play was vintage Kobe. It made my chuckle out loud and think how different our ball movement will be next year. Only two more games to appreciate the man though. _________________ "I don’t give a [expletive] what you say. It's wrong when Kobe was the main reason we were even in the game to begin with. |

lol. His comment didn't say that was the case at all. You are reading way too far into it. Criticism of a play does not equate to bashing a players overall contributions. _________________ "I don’t give a [expletive] what you say. Interesting that Black and Nance were noted to have played good D, though DLO was complimented that he played one good defensive sequence against Harden. Even Huertsas' effort was noted
The good thing is that they are better than Harden on defense (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ss_-D06505Q) and have less TOs than Harden (he has the highest total TOs in the NBA.
Who would want the FO to pay JC $12-$15M per year? |

Just watched the game on replay, without knowing the outcome.
I feel sick to my stomach. So many turnovers, so many stupid mistakes, so many possessions where nobody knew what to do, so many open shots on D, so many missed rebounds. Where the hell is Byron Scott and what the **** is he paid to do? Unreal! The team looks like a high school team. At least the offense looks better, until Kobe comes in. I've seen him play 100 games and that 3 he took with the Rockets up 10 while 2 guys were open under the basket was just unreal. Top 10 worst plays of his career. Just so selfish, why not pass the ball? I don't understand any of this. For instance Randle gets the ball in the low post after a pnr, then proceeds to dribble to the 3pt line and give the ball to Kobe who takes a off-the dribble 3. What the heck? Kobe's best shot all game came off a Huertas high pnr and a skip pass for a wide open 3. He wouldn't be shooting so abysmal if he played as part of the offense. I'm a huge Kobe fan but that game made me sick. I don't care how many points he scored, they were a detriment to the team.
Randle played much better D, though he at times just seems lazy. For instance Russell turns it over near the end and instead of sprinting back and contesting Ariza he stops running! What the heck! He needs work on defense, there's no doubt about it, but he had some good possessions and I think he's much better on the ball than off the ball.
Clarkson is the man. He deserves a new contract. He could have done a better job on Beverly in the 4th instead of letting him score 3 open 3s.
Russell showed again the lack of an NBA body. When the game gets physical he can't produce. He need to get stronger this off-season.
Hibbert played well, though he kept shooting long jumpers for some reason and when he got close he tried to dunk on Dwight (lol) and got blocked.
Huertas has to be resigned. He can contribute and he's actually decent defensively.
Metta has to go. He was somewhat good today, but you can see it's time for him to retire.
Nance played well.
Black played a lot. Needs to make free throws and not foul whoever is driving.
I just can't shake the though that this is a 40 win team without Kobe, with a stronger Russell and an actual NBA coach to organize it. _________________ RIP Kobe |

Russ had a few steals off-the ball. I think his vision and IQ helps him a lot there. I never see him getting caught out of position on D. _________________ RIP Kobe |

When Kobe took the 3 instead of passing for a layup... |
That's all you got out of Kobe's performance?
The hate is real.
35 PTS, 2 steals on 45% FG, 11-11 FT%, 65% TS in 27 minutes

I love Kobe, but whoever defends today's atrocity is kidding themselves. _________________ RIP Kobe |

So now we go from criticizing one bad shot to calling the whole thing an atrocity?
Yeah, there's definitely no "hate" in this thread. |

Yeah, I call a guy who abandons his position during sets to go in front of the ballhandler and demand the ball "atrocious". That's not basketball. _________________ RIP Kobe |

Then you must've found the last 20 years (which include 7 finals, 5 championships) of Laker basketball atrocious... |
