The End of the Kobe Bryant Era… And he went out in style. Not just style but legendary, epic, historic, Kobe Bryant-like, killer-instinct, going-out-my-way style.

He’s a stubborn son of a bitch … and love him for it.

As the retiring Gary Vitti said on ESPN,“I think if Jesus came down and said, 'Kobe, you can't do this,' Kobe probably would've said something like, 'Why don't you stick to making water into wine and raising people from the dead, and I'll take care of this basketball thing.'"

He was all determination tonight and throughout his career, and that’s what made him a legend. Tell him he couldn’t do something … tell him he would fail … he wasn’t the best … all that was just coal in the furnace. Keep shoveling it, haters.

He came back for all of you. He became death riding on the pale horse. The Black Mamba. One ring. Two. Three. You still hated. He dropped 62 in three quarters. Then topped that with 81. Four rings. Five rings. Then before dropping the mic and riding off into the sunset, he went out on his terms with 60. Enjoy it, haters.

All his career, he’s been climbing a mountain. Day after day, going a little higher, a little farther. The haters told him he couldn’t do it. Every day he went back to the mountain and climbed a few steps higher. One step. Two steps. Three. Four. Day after day he attacked it.

Greatness doesn’t happen overnight. Greatness happens an inch at a time. He was up before dawn, in the gym before everyone else and in the gym after every one leaves all his career. And those inches turned into miles.

This year, his 20th, he finally turned around and walked back down the mountain. He limped past every one of those inches he had climbed. He finally looked around, felt the sharp pains of every single step and agonizing stumble, and he smiled.

“I see the beauty in getting up in the morning and being in pain,” he said a while back, “because I knew all the hard work it took to get to this point. I’m not sad about it, I’m very appreciative of what I’ve had.”

He was our hero. He was their villain. I’m thankful to have been on this side of that duality because crazy stuff happened to you on the other side – like tonight. A comeback win, dropping 60. These stories will be retold a thousand times over. No matter how big the lead, how impossible the shot or circumstances, he could impose his will like no other. Last day of his career, would he rise to the occasion? Do you know who he is?

This story could only happen in Hollywood.

With 20 years of strapping on the purple and gold armor, Kobe Bryant suited up one last time tonight to an electric atmosphere. They chanted “Kobe” from the floor seats to the rafters and out on Chick Hearn Ct. They chanted loud and long into the night. If you had been to a finals game, you said this had a stronger buzz with bigger crowds, bigger gasps, less nerves and maybe a few more tears. “It’s like a game eight,” Worthy said beforehand. Afterward, Kobe left them speechless.

They were down 10 points with just over 2 minutes left. He had 47 points and was gassed, but it wasn’t over yet. Put yourself in the opponent’s shoes for a moment. You think you’ve got this game, right? But Kobe is on the other end of the court. Kobe. He’s haunted your nightmares for years, and he did it one more time. He split a double team and hit a pull up jumper to cut it to 4. Next time down he sank a three with 59 seconds left to cut it to 1. If that wasn’t dramatic enough, he then took the lead with a 20-footer from the right wing with 31 seconds left.

That one got me.

He scored 13 straight points to get to 60 in those final 2 minutes to win the game 101-96.

“Chills thinking about it,” said Lamar Odom, who got loud roars from Staples every time there was a shot of him.

Legendary. You wished the game would never end. But the time has finally come.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. God, I love you guys,” Kobe said to the crowd after the game.

60 Points in his Final Game.
33,643 Career Points.
3rd All Time in Scoring
The 81 Game
MVP
18-Time All Star
2 Gold Medals
5 Rings
So many comeback wins and amazing moments year after year after year … game after game after game … minute after minute after minute … for 20 years.

…Someone hit rewind.

Kobe -- -- He arrived at 5:13 p.m. tonight, black tie, black suit, Black Mamba with a mob of media surrounding him. You wondered and hoped if Kobe would make it to this final game. To get 60 points? That’s fantasy land. Kobe started the game off missing his first few shots, then caught fire, scoring 15 straight points for the Lakers. The team looking for him at every opportunity. “A little bit of nerves,” Kobe said of his first few minutes. He’d finish the first half with 22 points, a season high for the half. He’d pour in 38, playing all but the final few seconds of the second half. “I’m still in shock about it,” Kobe said afterward. He said it was a “constant dance of just trying to accept the moment,” meaning the moment of his final game vs. staying in the zone, scoring and trying to get the win. His sixth career 60+ point game of his career. Like the legendary gunslinger he was, Kobe emptied the clip, the tank and everything else had tonight. He actually broke Twitter tonight. It shut down as the game started. I’ve hated the games when I’ve had to remove his name from the template I have for these write-ups. To think now, it will be permanently removed...wow. Sometime before the next game, I will backspace over that name, and that will be a painful moment. I’ll wait awhile until I rip that Bandaid off. It’s funny how many of his peers and teammates say he’s the best Laker ever, yet the haters/media rank some of those same players ahead of him. Hate on. You missed hell of a ride. “He’s the greatest to wear the purple and gold,” Magic said in the pregame intros. “I had never seen anybody who wanted to win more so badly,” Phil Jackson said of Kobe. He showed it all the way to the finish line tonight. “You go from being the villian to now being some type of a hero,” Kobe said. “Then go from everybody saying pass the ball to shoot the ball. It’s really strange.” We will miss you, Kobe. No one worked harder. The team he grew up against, the infamous Utah Jazz against whom he hoisted those three playoff airballs as a rookie, Kobe gave them one final farewell, dropping 60. And no one will likely ever top this last game. Simply legendary. The Stats: He scored 60 points on 22-50 shooting (6-21 from three, 10-12 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 42 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a three, short on his first shot. He missed a sideline jumper next time down. He stripped a ball off Hayward to force a turnover. He weaved through the D and back-rimmed a layup. He posted up, got in the paint and missed the short one. He attacked and was stripped. He missed a pumping jumper out of a timeout. He rejected his man from behind off the glass on one end, then took it the distance and hit the high arching baseline jumper for his first points. He sank a pull-up 17-footer working off the Hibbert screen. He iso’d, attacked baseline and scored the And-1 reverse before going down (Mamba Face!), he made the FT. He stepped back and sank a corner jumper. Then he drained a wing three in transition next time down, Staples exploding. He missed a deep three next time down. He drew FTs on a three out of a timeout, he made all three. He missed a face-up wing three. He missed a three and wanted the foul. He missed a three returning to the game and wanted the foul. He spun baseline, stretched back out with both hands and finished over the top of the rim. He got a switch, spun baseline, pump faked and drew FTs, he made one. He up-faked on a deep three, got a man to bite, moved in a step and hit the three. He missed a three next time down. He missed a wing three out of a timeout. He attacked past Lyles but couldn’t finish over the help. He swiped a ball and threw it behind his back blindly down court to Russell, who went between his legs to Randle for the dunk. He probed the lane, pumpfaked and drew FTs, he made one. He missed an elbow fallaway to close the half. He had 22 points on 7-20 shooting (2-9 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 2 boards and a block in 18 minutes. Second Half: He faked right, went back left and scored a lefty layup around the help D. He worked his way across the lane next time down and hit the short jumper. He got tapped on a long three, it was tapped back out to him, he took it right down the middle of the lane and scored the layup. He missed a 40-footer trying to beat the shotclock. He iso’d and missed the FT pull-up. He looked bumped out of bounds with no call. He airballed a three in transition. He swiped a pass in transition D. He airballed another three trying to beat the shotclock (Clarkson and Russell putting him in a bad spot in that one). He attacked off the three line, got to the rim, hung and hit the one-hander off glass before coming down on his backside. He worked the right side of the floor and hit his baseline turnaround. He iso’d and sank the sideline three over his man. He missed a wing three on iso. He attacked from the wing and scored a layup with his left. He got tapped on a three at the buzzer. He had 37 points on 14-34 shooting after the third quarter. He missed a corner three. He missed a 20-footer. He attacked, spun and was blocked. He swished a three trailing the break and the crowd erupted as he got to 40. Out of a timeout, he took the high screen and rained the three. He missed a wing three next time down. He grabbed a board and outlet to Clarkson for a dunk. He missed a jumper in the middle of the lane, after avoiding a travel. He attacked off the high screen and hit the pull-up jumper at the FT line. He missed a good look at an elbow jumper next time down. He missed a baseline jumper, looking a little gassed. He missed a layup in transition. He iso’d, spun, pumped and reversed. He iso’d, spun at the elbow to his left and missed the And-1 layup, he made both FTs. He attacked in transition, went high off the glass and scored the runner. He split a double, pulled up and the elbow and knocked it down to cut it to 4. Next time down he drained a wing three with 59 seconds left to cut it to 1. What…Just… Happened?... Next trip down, he worked off the screen and hit the long jumper to give the Lakers the 1-point lead with 31 seconds left. That one got me. He was intentionally fouled on the inbounds with 15 seconds left, he made both for 60. One final masterpiece by the virtuoso.

Clarkson -- -- Clarkson had a big grin after the game. “It’s just crazy,” he kept saying over and over again. “That’s the craziest game I’ve ever played in.” The young guys got a taste of greatness tonight. The final stat of Kobe’s career will be an assist to JC for a dunk. Clarkson was the only other player to get to double digits as they focused on getting Kobe the ball, but also played a tough Jazz team that has had their number all season. It will be interesting to see what his contract ends up like this offseason. He’s shown a lot of potential offensively, but horrible on D at times. He said JC, Russell and Randle need to get together and work as hard as they can. “They have to build this thing as a unit,” Kobe said. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-10 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He attacked and missed a layup. He missed a reverse. He almost blew the lob from Huertas as he cut baseline on his man. He missed a pull-up off a great cross-over. He crashed the glass and tipped in the Randle miss. He missed a three, got it back and threw it away. Second Half: He 360 dunked on the break. He dunked off the Kobe outlet. Sweet lob from the corner on the break to Nance for the one-handed throwdown to cut it to 5. He hit a runner in the paint to cut it to 3 with 6 minutes left. He dunked on the long outlet by Kobe.

Russell -- -- “That was one of the craziest things I’ve ever gotten to witness,” Russell said. He said it provided him with a lot of motivation. He said he learned the most from him this game, “just his will power to win,” Russell said. Yep, Kobe imposed his will. Glad Russell got to see that. He worked the post quite a bit in this game. He and Kobe also worked the switches to get Kobe some iso’s against a smaller man. By the way, Russell is an excellent post entry passer. Phil would love him in the triangle. Defensively, gave up some And-1 layups to his man in the first half. Kobe really wants him to focus on this end of the court. I hope he goes into the offseason with a chip on his shoulder. He had doubters before the season. He dropped 39 in a game, then had the Nick Young incident and the haters climbed back on board. Like Kobe, he needs to use that as fuel to improve his game. Work on strength and range. Then work on it again and again and again. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-10 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a deep three. He broke down the D and dumped it to Roy for the Dunk and the Lakers first score after 5 minutes. He crossed over and missed a layup. He missed a wing three on a kickout from Kobe. Nice footwork, drop-step and layup in the post. He went between his legs to Randle for the dunk in transition off the Kobe behind-the-back feed. He gave up a couple And-1 layups to his man. He had 4 assists in the first half. Second Half: He posted up and swished the turnaround. He spun baseline and missed the layup (should have gone glass). He missed a wing three. He swiped a pass and was intentionally fouled. Nice change of pace cut on a high-post split, he took the pass from Hibbert and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He posted up out of a timeout, worked his way across the lane and hit the jumper. He was blindsided in the post and the ball was swiped. He got tapped on a floater out of a timeout.

Randle -- -- Loved watching him trying to D Kobe up in the warmup with a big grin on his face. He had that grin a few times on court with Kobe. Defensively, Ioved that sequence where he chased a smaller player out to the corner and smothered him for an airball. He had a couple moments like that. We played him at C for a while as we went small. Can’t wait to see him grow on both ends of the floor. Offseason to do: 1., 2., and 3. Work on jumper; 4. Work on off hand; 5. Work on explosion around rim; 6. Study the defensive end of the court. A lot of potential there he needs to tap into. Kobe was basically telling the guys afterward, carpe diem. Hit the gym hard, it goes by too fast. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a drive to his left. Not close on a pull-up jumper. Great D hounding a smaller man out to the corner and forcing him into an airball and shotclock violation. He got tapped on a drive, but Clarkson tipped it in. He slammed off the between-the-legs Russell pass (off Kobe’s steal and behind-the-back feed). Second Half: He switched on Hayward and swiped the ball from him.

Hibbert -- -- The only one to scratch out a couple of baskets for us in the first 5 minutes. Glad he was able to take the lid of that thing for us. We went to a lot of small ball in this game, so that kept his minutes down. He was awful for the Lakers this season and for whatever reason, he never lost that starting job. In a contract year, he’s looked like a mediocre bench player. It will be interesting to see what kind of deal he gets this offseason. The league is changing right now and he didn’t make a good case for himself, although he was a good locker room presence. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a turnaround in the post. He dunked on the drive and dish from Russell for the Lakers first score. He crashed the glass and followed tipped in the Clarkson miss. Second Half: He tapped out a Kobe miss and 24 attacked for a layup. He drew a charge, getting run over. He hit Russell with a great drop pass off a split play for the And-1 layup.

Nance -- -- “He just told us ‘leave no stone unturned,’” Nance said. Get after it. We finally looked for Nance with some consistency on the lob pass. We set him up for a lob to start the second quarter as he was our SF. Staples loves it when he takes flight. One of the highlights of the game was one-handed flush that Larry stretched out for from Clarkson on the break in a critical juncture of this one. It seemed like it’s been pulling teeth to make this a regular thing for the team, but tonight they seemed to have found it. So good. This offseason, Nance needs to work on that range. Shoot until your fingers bleed as Jerry West used to. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He sealed his man and threw down the lob dunk from Huertas. He got hit in the face trying elevate over a defender and throw down (he kept going up), he made both FTs. Second Half: He put back in a Kobe missed jumper. He threw down the one-handed dunk from Clarkson in the corner on the break (started off the great block from the Black on the other end).

Black -- -- Wow. Loved that block in the fourth. The last line of defense against a monster dunk and it was a monster block by Tarik. One of the many plays of the game as it led to the highlight lob from Clarkson to Nance on the other end. That was an inspirational play. We haven’t had too many inspirational defensive plays all season. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 7 boards, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He took the pass from Huertas rolling to the hoop, spun and scored the layup. He threw a pass away as his guys cut late for him. He couldn’t finish a lob. Second Half: He fumbled a Kobe pass away. He hammered down a dunk off a feed from Huertas. Sensational block on a dunk attempt at the rim and he controlled it, leading to a Laker dunk on the other end.

Huertas -- -- Both he and Russell had all 8 of the Lakers assists in the first half, 4 each. No telling what Huertas’s future is. He showed himself well as the season went along. The D improved, the trainwreck plays disappeared. He’s a very capable PG and can play in this league. He was throwing up a few lobs tonight. Glad Gobert wasn’t out there for us. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 4 boards, 6 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He lobbed to Nance to start the second quarter. He hit Clarkson with the backdoor lob. His lob to Black was picked off. He got a floater to drop. Second Half: Way short on a lob that could have cut it to 4 and he gave up an And-1 layup on the other end. He missed a layup on a drive. He found Black for the throwdown.

Kelly -- -- He played just a minute in the first half. Wish we could have played Metta a minute instead since this was perhaps Metta’s last game, as well. Oh well. We’ll give MWP a little love here. He played a quiet role for this team, but in the grand scheme of Lakerdom, he played a huge one. Game 7. The big three. The most epic postgame conference ever. He grew up here. This city is where he turned his career around. No matter where he goes, what he does, he’s a Laker. I hope he dropped some knowledge on the Laker youth while he was here. Who will provide the vet leadership next year? We’ll find out in July. The Stats: He had no stats and was a +0 in 1 minute. The Action: Nothing to report.

Scott -- -- You wouldn’t have known it from our maniacal fan base and the 500+ media members covering tonight’s game, but the Lakers just finished their worst season ever. Barring something like LeBron saying he wants Scott as his head coach for the Lakers next year, lol, this will surely be his last game. Right? I don’t envy the situation he was in. No one has really coached Kobe in the past few years. He was injured, couldn’t practice, had to figure out where his he could make his biggest contribution. Maybe Scott was the right man for the job. Hopefully, we come away with another lottery pick. But starting now, he’s certainly not the right man for the job… On to the game. It took 5 minutes before the Lakers scored their first points in the game… Huertas in for Clarkson, Lakers down 6-4 midway through the quarter… Nance in for Randle... Black in for Hibbert… Kobe going off to give the Lakers a lead. He had 12 of the Lakers 16 points when the timeout came, 15 straight points from Kobe to lead by 4… The Lakers trailed 21-19 after the first quarter… He started the Black, Randle, Nance, Clarkson, Huertas lineup… Lob to Nance to start the quarter… Kobe back in with 6 minutes along with Hibbert… Starters all back in down 7 with 5 minutes to go… Kelly, Randle front court… Poor D in the second quarter, giving up 36 points… The Lakers trailed 57-42 at the half. Just two players with assists… The Lakers trimmed it to 9 off three Kobe scores and the Jazz called a timeout… Down 10, Huertas in for Clarkson… Nance in for Randle with 5 minutes left down 8… Black in for Hibbert, Lakers down 6… The Lakers trailed 75-66 heading into the fourth… He started the Black, Nance, Kobe, Clarkson, Huertas unit. No rest for Kobe. Hopefully big minutes for Kobe this quarter… They cut it to 5 off a great block and dunk sequence, forcing a timeout… He brought in Randle for Tarik out of the timeout… Russell in for Huertas down 5… All Kobe down the stretch… Scott subbed him out with the game finally won with just a few seconds left… Down 10 with 2:15 or so left, they won it 101-96…

Mrs. DB and Family -- -- Thank you once again for suffering through my endless Laker games this season and working our schedules around them as much as was possible. As bad as the season was, we didn’t take too many nights off. I was probably louder than I’ve been all season tonight and will watch this one again. But thank you, thank you, thank you for being so supportive.

What a game and what a career.

We'll miss you, Kobe.

Thanks DB!

This game i think encapsulated Kobe's career. High volume, sometimes ill advised shooting, but the tenacity, drive and clutchness in taking his team on his back to the promised land. The greatest competitor I've seen in the NBA. You couldn't have scripted this any better.

wow very impressive write-up DB!

a couple vines from the TV
https://vine.co/v/itmt9YW6DOx DLO after Kobe made the go-ahead game winner. "This Sh*t Is Real!"

https://vine.co/u/1168406460867256320 and Kobe lovingly embracing the young players at the buzzer; with Stu's voice perfectly screaming "You couldn't have WRITTEN this"!

Lovely writeup, DB! I think I cried out all my tears when he first announced his retirement, but you got me to the brink again.

I'm still a little in awe of what I watched. And frankly it's hard to believe I'll never watch him play again, but I'm glad he ended inspiring the same kind of emotions as he did 16 years ago with the oop to Shaq that made me fall in love with the Lakers as a wee 6 year old.
