Not that I'm shedding any tears over this but I wonder what's going on over at ESPN?

Overpaid for rights fees so they have to let go of their more expensive sports personalities. They will be fine so they are always churning out new talent.

I wonder what becomes of First Take. That's one of their highest rated shows.

Wow. I'm not the hugest SB fan in the world, but I always felt that he and SAS always had amazing chemistry and managed to produce a genuinely interesting show. Aside from the 30 for 30 (which themselves have declined in quality) there really isn't much for ESPN to offer these days as far as I'm concerned.

Early reports have it slithering back into the sewer where it was originally spawned.

Well, that was the only show on ESPN I occasionally watched clips from.

Good bye ESPN.

A few weeks ago Colin Cowherd was saying Fox was going after Skip Bayless and Stephen A Smith.

Overpaid for rights fees so they have to let go of their more expensive sports personalities. They will be fine so they are always churning out new talent.

"Many past and present employees place most of the blame for the layoffs on the company’s huge NFL, MLB and NBA rights deals. The most frequent criticism heard last week dealt with the NFL contract, which is worth a whopping $1.9 billion per year — $800 million more than the NFL’s next biggest deal. Second-guessers believe ESPN had the leverage to cut a better deal and question whether another media company was within $500 million of ESPN’s offer. There aren’t many other networks that could afford to pay close to $2 billion per year for the NFL’s least competitive package.

“It’s been a total mismanagement of rights fees, starting with the NFL renewal,” said one former employee. “We overpaid significantly when it did not need to be that way, and it set the template to overpay for MLB and the NBA.”

ESPN doubled its annual payment for MLB to an average $700 million per year — a deal that gives ESPN just one playoff game per year. And next year, ESPN’s NBA deal takes effect. That’s the one that will see its average annual payout triple in cost to an average of $1.4 billion per year"

That is why the NFL, MLB and NBA do not care about ratings. There is always this emphasis on low ratings in the MLB and NBA. They do not care, they already have their money set.

First Take is one of, if not the, highest rated show coming out of Bristol. Skip's going to be hard to replace. He and SAS had a rare chemistry.

I'd like to see Jemele Hill go back. She's very talented and holds her own in debates. She gives Michael Smith fits, she did the same to SAS. I don't know if they'd be able to work together again.

He has ridiculous views sometimes, but is still very entertaining. I will definitely be following him to Fox.

What happened between Hill and SAS?

It looks like Bayless has five to six million good reasons to leave ESPN.

It's going to be hard to replace skip because he was hated by so many. Bill Simmons would have been a great replacement but he's on HBO. I think Robert Flores will replace him. He's funny and is also hated by many.

I don' know if there was a riff or she was given a promotion. I do know SAS couldn't back her down. That seemed to bother him sometimes.

She gives Michael Smith fits. They seem to be good friends but sometimes you can see Smith a little irritated. The lady does her homework, she's always up on the subject matter.

ESPN offered him 4m per year? Which means he is getting more from fox. Amazing for someone who doesn't really know anything about Sports. He is loud and often a contrarian. Which worked well with Stephen A as the guy trying to knock sense into him.

First take is also the only ESPN show I watch clips of on youtube.

I know Charles Barkley hates Skip Bayless but they remind me of each other. Nobody watches them because of their sports knowledge, but they still love watching them for entertainment.

Do you really believe a man who's been reporting on sports for over 40 years has no sports knowledge?

On more than one occasion I've heard SAS mention how much Skip really knew and challenged anyone who thought like you to engage with him in a debate.

Charles also has sports knowledge. He very opinionated but he's also versed in sports.

Fox offered Skip between 5 & 6 millions. LINK
Quote:
SI.com reported Bayless will be leaving the network and his lightning-rod “First Take” gig for Fox Sports 1 in a deal that will pay him between $5 million and $6 million per year. It will reunite Bayless with former ESPN executive Jamie Horowitz, who has helped lead the hot-take debate movement.
I don't think a company would offer that kind of money to a man who knew nothing about sports. FS1 is a sports station.

Contrarians usually have knowledge of that they oppose. One of my favorite people here in LG is a contrarian.

This show really got flat and lost energy in the past year+
They stopped having the great back and forths, and Stephen A isn't even there half the time. The energy and magic is gone. Now they're just idiots, not even entertaining idiots..
