This is awesome.

I was looking for veteran defensive guru type but it looks like they are
really focusing on player development which makes perfect sense for an obvious reason.

We got B. Shaw who help PG13 to develop in his early years. We got a communicator in Mumueys. We got development guy from GS. We got a shooting coach from Bulls back in the day. now We got a guy who had a part in developing KD to repeat the process with Ingram. Well thought out staff.

32 wins are not impossible feat, but I don't even care for the record anymore.
Just develop them properly.

Our staff does look very well organized.

The young players are finally gonna have freedom because of our great staff we are gonna have, no more 'man up'. Just simple basic coaching will make
A big difference.

Sources: Lakers are hiring Coby Karl, son of George Karl, as head coach of the L.A. D-Fenders in D-League. Karl was Westchester assistant.

Casey Owens got the @DFenders to the @nbadleague finals, he was lead assistant on Lakers summer league squad, I'd expect he got a call up

I would expect that Casey Owens to be retained in some capacity with Lakers coaching staff, with Coby Karl taking over @DFenders gig

This was a really solid hire. Coby Karl is already familiar with his father's uptempo philosophies. If I recall correctly, George Karl tried to get him on the King's staff last year but Divac wasn't having any of it.

Unlike previous seasons, I think the Lakers will finally make a concerted effort and utilize the d-league as a legitimate means to develop talent. Seems like they want the up and coming players to make a seamless transition to the Lakers squad. Coby Karl, by virtue of his age, will likely be a sponge to Luke and run whatever is demanded from the Lakers coaching staff. I think the d-fenders will be fun to watch.

Last season, I sensed there was a strong disconnect between d-fenders coach, Casey Owens and Byron Scott, as each ran their own systems or lack thereof if we're talking about Byron. With the d-fenders recent success, I think Casey might be moving on up somewhere, though I'm unsure if he'll join the Lakers coaching staff.

Yeah, we can send Hairston and other good players to the squad and see if they Improve so we can sign them to a contract.

That's pretty cool. There was extra communication between Owens and Ingram during the SL games. Seems like Luke was impressed with him.

sometimes it feels like Mitch drafts guys because he sees them as future coaches, Madsen, Luke, I think he looked at Farmar like that, now Larry Nance fits that mold of future coach type...

Remember that Luke and Casey Owens have history that dates back to Luke's one year stint as a development coach for the D-Fenders in 2013, before he joined Kerr's staff. Knowing that, along with his reputation as a really solid coach, especially in understanding the centrality of installing a positive culture, I was actually pretty surprised that he wasn't one of Luke's first hires on his staff. Would be good to see him move up. His fit seems too ideal not to.

As long as they make a difference the Lakers can have 20.

That's great news, I was hoping that would happen.

I just found out that he follows me (or at least the Laker Film Room account) on Twitter.

How cool is that for you, GT. I'm happy for you and all our success, man.

On topic, so happy Casey got promoted. Very well-deserved. Luke has assembled a very nice staff.

Edit: who knows, maybe you'll get snapped up somewhere as a film coordinator for a real NBA team, GT

It would actually be pretty funny if a team showed up at a game with more coaches than players.

Is Casey Owen a remnant from MDA era?
I don't know if my memory serves me right but I though it was Lewis... He isn't, at least, Byron Scott's hire, is he?

what I am saying is.. is he any good?

I think he was hired independently of Byron/Mike, as the d-fenders weren't really seen as an extension of the Lakers during those years. Owens was likely hired by Joey Buss, who continues to impress and is on an upwards trajectory.

Here's what was said about him. Seems like the anti-Byron to me:

Quote:
Harrison Faigen ‏@hmfaigen Was impressed with the locker room he built with the D-Fenders. All his players I've spoken with swear by him

Quote:
@EricPincus just understands players...speaks to them as equals. Comes across on their side rather than adversarial
