Kobe Bryant files trademark for “Black Mamba” nickname

Kobe Bryant has been using the “Black Mamba” nickname for years, but he’s never actually trademarked it. Until now, that is. Earlier this month, Bryant’s Kobe Inc. company officially filed paperwork to trademark it.

From ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell:

Kobe Inc., the business arm of recently retired Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, has filed to trademark his familiar nickname “Black Mamba.”

The company filed for the trademark May 2, a record with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office shows, with intent to use the nickname on everything from athletic apparel to sneakers.

Neither Bryant, nor Nike, who pays him to endorse its shoes and has used the nickname in marketing, ever has trademarked the term.

Now that Bryant is retired, he’s expanding his business interests. It makes sense for him to have his most iconic nickname trademarked to help him monetize it in every way imaginable.

Nope. Only if it's used for commercial purposes -- like advertising copy or a T-shirt. Assuming the trademark is awarded.

As a sidenote, Pat Riley owns the trademark to "threepeat."

I'm kind of surprised he's even able to, given it was Beatrix Kiddo's code name in Kill Bill before he even started using it. I'm surprised Quentin Tarantino doesn't already have it trademarked.

That's the question. Maybe when it comes to athletes using it. I know BLACK MAMBA was used by Roger Mayweather while he was it in the ring. Still one of the best characters in boxing. Healthy deteriorating rapidly.

When asked about his ring nickname, Roger stated:

"It’s funny because I wanted a boxing nick-name that wouldn’t be common to most people. One day when I was flipping through channels and I came upon this channel showing different reptiles, and they were showing the black mamba, one of the most deadly snakes in the world. I loved the way the mamba attacked so quietly, but when he hit you he just hit you one time and the poison was in you. That reminded me of myself right there."

You probably could, since that would be a different context than how Kobe uses the term. However, if the picture of the Black Mamba was holding a basketball, that might be considered an infringement.

As this suggests, trademarks can get very complicated. If Kobe were able to trademark Black Mamba it would probably only be applied to situations where the phrase was clearly linked to him; he couldn't, for example, get zoos to stop using the phrase to identify the animals.

Ehh, filing a patent trademark is iffy at best. I've been in the aftermarket automotive parts business for years, and other manufacturers copy parts all day long and it never holds up in court.

Look at Michael Jordan trying to sue that company in china and didn't win. It can go either way really. I know most don't hold up over various loopholes in the system.

That's a funny thought!!! Kobe strolling through zoos, everybody is chanting M-V-P, he rolls up on the Mamba cage to find his name, he just juts out his jaw and stares down the zookeeper (then sues him for $20mil)!!

Surprised this wasn't done a long ago.

Wondering what Black Mamba translate into Chinese means and/or interpreted, given his work and popularity in China. Hint: Black Mamba in Chinese characters are 黑曼巴
