A key contributor on those great early '70's Lakers teams.

RIP, I have a feeling Jim, Dr Buss, Chick and our guy Luca would be watching the lottery tomorrow from above.

A too much overlooked member of the 72 championship team, he stepped into an incredibly difficult role as the guy who took Elgin Baylor's starting slot when Baylor retired 9 games into that season. McMillian already had plenty of experience there, as Baylor had been unavailable for virtually all of the previous season due to injury, nonetheless his retirement was a shock as he was the first great L.A. Laker to hang them up, and there was plenty of pressure on the second-year player.

McMillian's uncanny shooting touch and ability to mix it up on defense and the boards made him a favorite of coach Bill Sharman, and the rest is history. An injury that hobbled him in the 1973 Finals was one of the key problems in the Lakers being unable to successfully defend their crown.

Jerry West yesterday called the trade of McMillian to Buffalo for center Elmore Smith on the eve of the 73-74 season (Wilt Chamberlain had left the team) "one of the worst trades in Lakers history", also noting that his sentiment had nothing to do with Smith. I think many Lakers fans of that era would concur.

RIP Jim McMillian and condolences to his family.

An often overlooked player who was tough and a great contributor to those late West-era Lakers teams.
