I keep seeing 17 wins being brought up as if Byron and Kobe are still here to derail the Lakers.

Newsflash: Byron and Kobe are gone. That's an addition by subtraction, fellas.

Luke is in and he more than likely doubles that win total.

One of the young three will probably emerge as a superstar (Russell is my guess) and we get some big name free agent the following year.

Things are looking good.

I may agree that the Lakers are trending upward. But until I see the draft and free agency play out I am a long way from predicting 40 wins.

I am optimistic though. IMO the hiring of Walton and a new mentality will be huge. It is a system and style that players should buy into an hopefully thrive in.

I am looking forward to the development and increased production of the young players in it. Another year of working on their strengths and weaknesses. Adding the #2 and #32 also builds up that foundation. Potentially both picks will have an impact.

Finally to state the obvious, free agency will define the off-season. Who they add and how they fit into the roster puzzle will dictate how many wins are possible. A jump to 40 wins would be huge. Not completely far fetched though.

I like your optimism and share it. Just with a bit more crossing my fingers that all continues to go well before predicting such a turnaround.

Go Lakers!

Positive thread, I like it

Barring a superstar signing, I'll chalk up a 20 games improvement in the win column as a successful season

Then after next summer... playoff

If we get Simmons, we'll win 40+. If we get Ingram it'll be about 30.

Some of you are so funny?

How are you so certain of any win total until the Lakers actually have a completed roster?

We have very little tradable assets, and I don't see any realistic free agent signing that is going to propel us to 40 wins.

I can see this. I believe offensively we will be able to keep up with anyone in the league. I really hope for a pg13 move. Russell will break out and nance as well.

Not going to argue with your opinion, it's your opinion.

Not sure why "tradable assets" has anything to do with any speculation though.

IMO the Lakers need to keep developing their current talent to see what they have before they trade any foundation players away.

Also disagree with your opinion about realistic free agents. All depends on what is considered "realistic". Adding 3-4 solid free agents changes this roster significantly.

How they fit and contribute could significantly change the chemistry of this team. Add a legitimate center and a couple of wing defenders that buy into the system and wins can and will happen.

Just my opinion.

I think 30ish is realistic. If they do great in free agency, I can see more. There will be a ton of roster turnover, a new system which requires a learning curve, and our core is not too far out of high school with the exception of Clarkson. All of those factors make me believe that there will be some ups and downs this year. We're getting the ship pointed in the right direction, and that's the biggest thing.

Without a couple of superstars our young core is good enough for another lottery pick, period.

Can we talk abou 40 games two seasons from now?

Impossible to predict something before the FA market opens.

If we keep the roster, add Ingram and only minor role players as FA, I believe we'll be around 30 wins. To reach 40, we need to get a couple of solid starters.

I will wait till preseason to do my predictions. I remember heading into last season positive and then we looked like trash in the preseason and I knew our season was going to go down the toilet again.

This is nitpicking but there is a difference in lottery team and 40 wins. This draft has three 40 win teams in the lottery.

Perhaps I am delusional but I am expecting some significant player development from the young players currently on the roster. Also expecting a few quality free agents to be signed. I am not expecting any "superstars" but 2nd tier players that fit the system and provide that experience that is needed to win games.

Even my most optimistic FA signings would likely produce a borderline playoff team. The more realistic ones hopefully a more competitive team and with the potential to pass that 30-35 win plateau. But until we actually see the signings and how Walton develops the player chemistry we are all just speculating. Including my own uninformed hopeful predictions.

Last years team without Kobe should have won over 20 games.
Last years team without Byron should have won over 20 games.
So without both? 😄

Hard to say. We were about a 23 win team last year, but Luke + player growth + #2 aren't going to get us 17 more wins so it's up to the FA signings or trades.
