Come on, Klay is just giving his dad a hard time. Why so serious Francis? Let them have some fun.

Of course, Mychal is a little biased, both ways.

Were they ? They had trouble with the celtics. 15-1 2001 Lakers would be a better of all time team imo?

Those Celtics teams of the 80s would give any team of any era a run for their money. Bird and those Celtics were no pushovers.

Glad OP mentioned it - Klay was joking following up a Draymond statement that he doesn't get into the whole "who's better" speculation because there's no way of knowing.

Pre-expansion era in the 1980's saw some of the best teams in the NBA. Most were in the East, so the Lakers typically had an easy route to the Finals.

Lol his father was actually a Laker. It's safe to assume he has a healthy respect for Showtime.

I hope his dad takes away his allowance for a month...and makes him shave that pornstar goatee he's rocking.

Or cut his allowance.
He's probably made more then his dad has in his lifetime already.

You never know who would win old or new rules. It's fun to talk about i guess, but he has every right to feel the way he does after winning 73 games in a season and they are about to win the title. THey are about to do something no team has EVER done.

The 3 point shooting leaguewide is way beyond what it ever was then, the skill of the players in this era as far as shooting 3's is truly amazing.

You're confusing skill with opportunity. NBA players haven't improved in their ability to make 3-pointers -- they simply take a lot more than they use to. The league shot 35.9% in 94-95 and 35.4% in 2015-16 -- it's been pretty consistent over the last two decades. (Before then, 3-point shots were so rare that the percentages get skewed for a lot of reasons).

Showtime started in an era where players didn't take a lot of 3s. It simply wasn't the style of play. But the Lakers had lots of good long distance shoots.

Shooting the same % while taking more shots is a testament to how improved the shooting has become from 3.

Why make this silly thread? It was clearly a joke, but the title is worded to get everyone worked up. I hate those kind of misrepresentations. If you want to start a debate thread about which team is better, fine, but don't use a title like that, because it is totally misleading and just plain wrong.

They're specialty rhythm shooters that should zone in with increased reps, so they're actually worse if they can't up the %.

That is mathematically true. The original comment was made in jest though so it doesn't matter at all.

Ah, the folly of youth...

Magic and Lebron may both be 6'9" initiators for their team, but Showtime played transition AND half-court about 2-3 gears faster than the Cavs. Why the Cavs are just walking the ball up-court and allowing GSW's underrated defense get set in half-court is beyond me.

In the 1985 and 87 and 88 years, Riles pushed hard to have Magic, Byron, Coop, and even Worthy take the ball and lead the break, even after made buckets. At a minimum, he wouldn't wait the full 10-seconds (as it was back then) before crossing mid-court, and would try to initiate by the 6 or 7 second mark when possible.

I also love how sportscasters were making a big deal over GSW having 7 players in double figures in Game 1 - especially knowing that the 87 Lakers had 7 guys AVERAGE in double figures that year.

OKC gave GSW all they could handle by attacking the basket -- whether in transition, for foul-generating drives in half-court, or for rebounds -- and by using their length to trap, aggressively switch, and force turnovers. Showtime did that even more.

And the 80s Lakers were arguably longer than this year's Thunder. Aside from Durant's 7'2" wingspan compared to Worthy and Ibaka compared to AC, you have longer guys at every other position - and I'll submit that prime Worthy was faster up and down and quicker laterally than Durant.

Modern defensive/ hand-checking rules? Goes to Showtime in a close 7 because while Curry and Klay can score even more than Isiah and Dumars used to, Worthy and Magic and Kareem would attack the basket all day and draw a lot more fouls than any other opponent they've faced.

Old-school, full-hand-check, no-zone rules? Lakers in 5.

The Warriors are a very good team, and I think they could play with any of the great teams that I've seen in my 30+ years of watching the NBA.

However, the Warriors have never had to play against elite, HOF low post players. This is why I think they would be underdogs against the Showtime Lakers. I don't think they would be able to use their small lineup against Kareem (although a 1978 or 1988 Kareen would be a major liability in his perimeter defense). I think both Worthy and Magic would be nightmares in the post and would even get the better of excellent defenders like Draymond and Iggy. I think defensively the Showtime Lakers would be able to switch every screen. It would be a great series, but I'd pick the Lakers.

I also think the Warriors would have a difficult time with the 1999 Spurs (TD and the Admiral) and Shaq's Lakers because they would get killed inside.

I often wonder what would happen to the modern NBA if players like prime Shaq, Duncan and Hakeem were still around.
