Secondly, LeBron, Kawhi, Artest, Bowen and Tony Allen have all been better defenders than Kobe.
Kobe when locked in was an excellent defender. Kind of what LeBron has become now. But that phase post Shaq and pre-Pau, he used to take so many possessions off and gamble on so many possessions. Also, a lot of those All-Defensive First Team selections were simply based on reputation and not the performances. If the media had voted then like they do now, Kobe wouldn't have received half of them. But since the coaches did, they valued his previous impact and reputation while doing so.

This site is turning into a Lebron page. Who gives a crap about Lebron, the Warriors or the Cavs or who is a better defender. It's an opinion and it's a waste of life.

since when is Lebron is shut down defender? sure he gets the fancy blocks and steals, but he is never on the best wing players of the other team.
Kobe has more all defensive honors than all those them, and these are voted by the coaches.
Lebron is a very good team defender, Luke was talking about that today, about how the Warriors were afraid to drive in the paint knowing that he was playing weak side. His defense was crucial for the Cavs winning their title.
How many points did Draymond green scored again? Did I watch the wrong game and saw lebron guarded curry and Klay and shut them down?

Indeed. It's bad enough to have to read the posts from guys posing as Laker fans.
Luke Walton had an awesome press conference today saying things that are hitting home so much. D'Angelo was there like a kid at Halloween and answering questions like a seasoned vet.
2016-17 team with a couple of good signings and Ingram are going to win and win more than they have by a lot.
Golly Gee! Someone said something moronic on the internet! Stop the presses! _________________ How can I get a copy of a Laker game played on Sunday, March 11, 2001 Sonics/Lakers? If you know PM me please

I don't know but you obviously have no idea what team defense is. And good start, calling our new coach a liar the day he joins the team. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023.
I always thought Phil preferred that Kobe rest on that side so he wouldn't be worn out on offense. Typically, Kobe had no respect for the opposing team SG and played off of him.
Certain matchups intrigued him and Phil usually let him have those but overall, he wasn't relied on to do much on that side of the court. Managing his workload is what helped him play 20 seasons.

Pretty much, he uncharacteristically blew a lot of coverage when he was covering the pick and roll, but he was fantastic as an off-ball defender. Not just protecting the paint but he also could be chalked in for 2-3 steals simply reading predictable passes.

This. I think there are undercover Spurs in LG. They've been in here for at least 15 years and are only interested in starting chaos amoung real Laker fans.
That pretty much sums it up. _________________ LBJ + AD = More rings

I remember a few years ago on NBA TV with Rick Kamla (kobe hater) and Steve Smith. Kamla said that he though Kobe was an overrated defender. Smith looked like he was going to jump across the table and strangle Kamla. _________________ Thank you, Kobe. We love you.

You been watching way too much 2014-2016 Kobe. The only players Kobe didn't "respect" we're the ones that couldn't shoot - and guess what, that strategy almost worked every time. Kobe is probably a top 3 defender at the SG position ever. Hands down. No other comment needs to be said about that.
I agree certain matchups intrigued him, which is what made Kobe the perfect blend of entertainer and substance player. He made a statement when he really wanted to. _________________ "Bryant has been the second best player in the NBA for over a decade, but the number 1 player changes every other year. Ugh, these guys should stick to football.
Yeah I agree with you. That's some bs that fool is spouting off. Kobe and Jordan were elite defensive players on top of being the best players in the game in their primes for a considerable amount of time. _________________ "We are the goodest." - Shaq ESPN interview

No, I leave 2014-2016 out of any discussion about his performance or ability. Phil critiqued his defense several times over the years. When he was focused, there was no questioning his ability on that side of the floor. He would get up for the big games and the big players but he took a bunch of games off. No one blamed him for it. The voters and media never held it against him.
While Phil allowed him to coast and keep the mileage down, Mike Brown and Mike D'Antoni wanted more from him. D'Antoni had that stretch where he assigned him to the other team's point guard to get him to engage and Kobe excelled but he was too old to be going all out on both ends like it was 2001 again. If Kobe was able to focus on 3 and D like the other great defenders, he would have been a great defender by every statistical measure.
