There's a lot of talk about Randle's best role and position in this current NBA. Let's discuss his role, position and market value whether he will be playing with the Lakers or another team next year. Here are the options to discuss.

Role and position

1. Starting 4
2. Starting 5
3. Bench 4
4. Bench 5

Market value

1. $1M to $10M
2. $11M to $14M
3. $15M to $19M
4. $20M +

I think he plays on another team next year because he does not accept a bench role, and because he (correctly) thinks of himself as a starter. There is nothing to complain about a player who holds himself in high regard so long as he makes proper additions to his game.

I think in this current NBA he is an undersized 5. I think $11M to $14M is about the right range for him. Not sure I would want to pay him that salary to start at the 5 for the Lakers though.

I dont think he shoots well enough to be a starting 4 in the league on a good team and I dont think hes big enough or defends well enough to be a starting 5 in the NBA. Unfortunately with his size, he would need to shoot much better to be a valuable starter in this league.

He 3yrs/$36m million is right where he belongs, coming off the bench for 20-25 minutes a game. He can win you some games and help you lose some games. He will bring energy, but also make a lot of mistakes.

I think hed be more apt to take 4 years $64m and start on a bad team then accept a roll as a back up though. He was the #2 ranked player in the whole country as a HS senior and thought his #6 position in the draft was an insult. Hes been told that hes a franchise player for a long time and he believes it.

I've always been a fan of having 3 starters for 2 positions.
Like when we had Bynum, Pau and Odom.
Bynum started at 5, Pau at 4. Gave us a huge frontcourt.
Then Odom came in. He could play the 4 with Bynum at the 5, and gave us a different look than the starters (namely, LO could run the floor and defend the perimeter).
At crunch time, we often used Pau at the 5 and LO at the 4. We were quicker, everyone could pass etc.
Pau could play the 4 or the 5.

I think Randle potentially gives us that swing player.
He can play the 4 with the right 5 (ideally, a rim protector/perimeter defender who can also shoot), and he can play the small ball 5 which gives us the much quicker team.
Basically, poor man's Draymond.

He's still very young. He has made great strides with his D this season. Admittedly, he is still not there.
If he could get his 3 point % up to like 35%, and keep improving defensively, look out.
I would hate to see him do that on another team.

Our defense would take a big step backwards with that lineup.

As for Randle, starting 4 or 5 and probably $12-15 mil.

Kuzma is a rookie, has BBIQ, and has all the tools to become a solid defender.

Just not the effort so far. And Cousins is bad defensively.

Yes, Kuzma/Cousins would be horrible defensively, and for a transition team, it all starts with Defense.

We've made great strides this year defensively, particularly with Randle and on the perimeter (KCP has been good, Lonzo has been surprisingly good, and Hart is really solid).

If we added the right rim protector, we'd be really good defensively.
Since Gobert is not available, I'd rather we add a solid 5, and spend the money on the perimeter in this now perimeter oriented league.
If the 2 max plan is not in play, I like adding PG and either Dedmon or Noel.
Dedmon has become a surprisingly good shooter, though Noel is the better defender.
Count me in the No Cousins faction.
Offensively, the guy is a beast, no denying that, but the rest of him is just not the right fit for this team.

He might look good beside Myles Turner, and Thaddeus Young has a player option next year. I wonder how Mintz's relationship with the Pacers is these days.

Starting 4, backup 5.

I have no idea what he is worth, but if I were managing a team I wouldn't want to pay more than $11 to $14 million because you need the big money for superstars.

Hard to isolate best role, contract length and contract value from the context of market and franchise slot opportunities.

I'm inclined to want the Lakers to re-sign him for $14M if he would stay for that, because I think Randle's best shot at a starting role fits with a Laker need. With skinny shooting forwards, he's a fine match for full-time mini-center for $12M, maybe $15M. Think New York would pay him even more, but the Lakers have no better plan and the experiment with a four man array of big centers is failing at that slot here.

I don't think of him reaching the quality of play seen (shooting, defensive intensity and play-making instincts) in the prototypical mini-center Dray Green, but the Lakers will have to compromise this Summer somewhere in the FA market. Let it be here, with him. Keep moving forward with him, if possible with a moderated contract. If it's thought he won't stay for that, trade him this next window for a guard who can shoot, whatever the best can be obtained at the time.

He needs to paired with a tall floor spacing big. Then he can start. I'm disappointed I haven't seen him with Lopez alot this season.

He's only a starting 4 if the center can spread the floor. You can't start him next to most centers.

role: small ball center, 6th man type player.

salary: 15 million in today's market.

He has being a starter in his mind, but 22-25 minutes at backup 5 is where I'd ideally want him.

After he stopped sulking, his overall play at the beginning of the year as the small-ball 5 was game-changing.

I'd give him $11M-$14M for that.

Sign him for 12 million or so, if it doesn't work out you can easily trade that.
