Luckily we have McGee for them, Zubac for big teams and Chandler to back up both situations.
He's still a work in progress, but it looks very promising. |
This is true. But he's auditioning to be a 2nd big off the bench for us next year.
Frankly, I wouldn't spend much of my cap space on a center next year (i.e. Boogie/Vuc) as they are guys who can't play in crunch time in the playoffs. But Zub can become a consistent 15-18mpg guy off the bench next year.
What a career resurrection by him. |
I’m not sure that’s his ceiling. Keep in mind he’s only Ingram’s age and needed even more work on his body than BI did. I think he’s got started potential in the future and could be a quality first big off the bench as early as next year. He’s trimmed off most the baby fat, this offseason will be the time to start replacing it with muscle. |
I'm talking about next year though? |
I thought you said he’s auditioning to be the second big off the bench last year but maybe I read that wrong. I think he’s auditioning to be the sole backup at the very least with a dark horse chance to be the starter if they take the same approach to the center position as they did last offseason. |

Not a big of plus/minus, but I *believe* Zubac's +35 was the highest single game total since Luc Mbah a Moute had a +57 over a year ago in Nov 2017. |

It’s pretty indicative of how much better he was than the other centers. I thought we should cut him not too long ago and now I’m thinking he could be the starting center for a championship team in a few years. Get in the weight room Zu! |

Guess who has the worst +/- on the Lakers this year? Hint: Lonzo is second worst. |

If we trade away the core... we might have our own mini diaspora version of OKC... with Randle... DLO... Lonzo... Ingram... Kuzma... Zubac... Bryant... all among the league leaders in five years. |
LeBronze is fine to sign, but he is older and perhaps entering an injury prone slide down. (He certainly has eroding skills, especially on D) Keeping Randall and DLO and Thomas and allowing the drafted players to develop is so much more interesting, for me, than gutting the team and having AD, LeGroin and scrubs as a mercenary group to root for. |
And THIS - and NOT ANYTHING to do with Kobe - is why I was less than enthused by the front office's decision to sell out to Lebron/LeGM. |

But my respect to Zub as he's turned things around.
Maybe he's our future center that we can keep for cheap next year (or at least has a small caphold). |
He's not gonna be cheap if he keeps playing like this. He likes to show up in the biggest games on the biggest stages, first at GSW now at OKC. These "flashes" of greatness needs to taken seriously.
He might give us a big discount though since he grew up a Laker fan and he loves playing here so much so we'll see. |
Well, I'm not concerned about a team making a huge offer actually. He has a low cap hold and we have RFA rights. Maybe a team tries to do an Arenas deal but the market is actually currently flooded with centers. |
He could be viewed as an asset (small one) too if we make a trade in-season for some help-the RFA rights do transfer in this case don't they? Orlando might like him as the primary backup to Bamba over the next couple of years -maybe a KCP/Zubac centered trade could work?
I'd do KCP/Zubac/2019 1st for Vucevic/the highest of their 3 2019 2nd round picks (Cleveland's probably) -checks all of Orlando's boxes (expiring+young player+1st rounder) gets us real help for a stretch run and the pick exchange probably only moves us down 10 spots but helps our cap situation for free agency by exchanging that first-round salary for a minimum slot.
Totally agree centers in general aren't getting paid next summer. I'm very interested to see what shooting non rim protectors like Lopez & Vecevic actually get when the dust settles.
A generation ago we'd all be talking about Zubac as a possible future all-star-not sure I love everything about the way the game has been shaped by rule-changes over the past decade or so. |
I initially wanted to do the same trade but replace KCP with Stephenson/Beasley in the package (in other words I would rather keep KCP).
After what I saw against OKC, I am on the fence regarding the trade. Maybe Zubac has Vooch potential with better shot blocking. |

Zubac is 86% from FT, a good benchmark that he has a soft touch. Does he even try shooting a 15 footer? I think he kinda remind me of Marc Gasol especially if he can hit a mid range jumpshot. |

Zu is for real. I guess Luke believes it as well because he let Zu play the entire 4th quarter and OT.
TC starts and plays 1st quarter. McGee plays 2nd and 3rd quarters. Zubac plays 3rd and 4th quarter. Sounds like a plan. _________________ Playoffs is good enough. - Jeanie Buss 2024 |

17 and 7 in 21 minutes. This after a very encouraging 14 games: In Zu's last 14 games before this one : (11.2PPG), (5.9RPG) (59%FG) in (19MPG).....Per 36 (21PPG) (11RPG) |

Zubac can be really good.
He will be a RFA at the end of this year with a $1,931,189 Cap Hold.
Hope the Lakers can wrap up their "big free agent" early this offseason |

I wonder if they'll let him go and make the mistake of chasing big names again, like the last administration did. When you have someone this young and talented, you try to retain him.
We could have used Randle in the interior tonight. |

How much cap do we have left after signing the next superstar assuming it's gonna cost about $35M? I don't think Zu will be asking for much since he really likes playing here. I might be wrong though since he hasn't gotten paid yet and this would be his first contract. _________________ Playoffs is good enough. - Jeanie Buss 2024

THIS is someone you say is only 21 and give them time to develop.. |
ALL 21 year old players in the NBA who are working hard deserve patience. Zu, Lonzo, BI, Fultz, Josh Jackson ... none are busts, all need time.
But the C and PG positions definitely need more development time than others given their importance in offensive and defensive schemes.
Anyway - another fine game by Zu. Houston fans were relieved to see him foul out. |
