GT, when you have a chance, can you briefly look into Gasol's PnR defense (esp. against guards where he can't soft hedge/ ICE... maybe the Warriors series in 2015?) just as a bit of a projection of what Zubac could do?

I watched a video of him way back December 2015 where the video states that he possesses a 7'4 wingspan. Looking at his recent pics, it seems like he has a longer wingspan, maybe in the 7'5-7'6 range.

Such a shame that Mozgov's contract ended up being 2 years too long. Center rotation in 2-3 years should've been Zubac as the starter with Black as the backup. But with Mozgov's deal, he's definitely not going anywhere anytime soon, so Black is likely to be the odd man out in about a year, which is unfortunate because his upside is vastly underrated. The mobility, athleticism, and energy he brings is valuable, especially coming off the bench.

That can still happen actually.

New CBA next year or so with a likely new amnesty. Use it on Mosgov and we're good.

Yep, if Zubac shows he's starter material, Mozgov is a prime amnesty candidate.

I think knowing the amnesty is almost assuredly going to be there in the next CBA made the Lakers a bit more comfortable in offering these contracts to the likes of Mozgov and Deng.

I keep seeing the comments about the amnesty provision being used on Mozgov. Where are you getting this info? Just your assumption/ high hopes or actually being discussed as a part of a new CBA?

Honestly, I am fine with the center depth. For the next 2 years they are only paying all three about $24M. About the same as Whiteside or Howard.

Gives them some versatility and ability to develop Zubac. Also decent depth if an injury occurs. Financially locking up that position for at least two years is a solid move.

I do not see the concern for Mozgov's final year or two either. Unless injured he will still be contributing even if on a limited basis. And at $16M a year, his contract is not outrageous by league standards.

The league has always had the albatross contract for a aging player on his final season. Nothing new here. Just looks worse because of the cap and salary going up.

Think of how many $12-15M contracts were still in play a few years ago when that was a lot of money. Boozer, R. Jefferson, Lee come to mind.

There are a lot of things Zub can learn from Moz. They are both really large guys with relatively slow feet. Zub can learn things like verticality, setting screens, etc.

Moz, aside from PnR coverage is a sturdy defender inside. Really difficult to score on

Tyron Lue said that Moz has one of the best Verticality on defense in the league.

I think GT showed some of the limitations mobility wise on defense.

However, he's only 19, and I think the coaching staff will invest a lot of time in getting him up to speed over the next few years. Kid may be our starter in 3 years IMO.

I see Zubac being a similar player to someone like Mozgov. A guy who can bang on the inside, protect the rim, and occasionally step outside and hit open mid range jumpers. Think that Mozgov will be a good mentor for someone like Ivica. Also, if he became someone like Mozgov, that'd be a steal for 32.

It is one option that is easy for both sides to agree on. The owners can drop a large salary from their cap and potential luxury tax while the player still gets paid and usually gets picked up and gets another contract. It is a win-win for both sides.

Not to mention the salary freed up is likely spent on another player or players. Considering how anti-salary cap the players are, owners could probably ask for two amnesty provisions and get them. I agree it's a slam dunk provision.

Lakers Podcast: Is Ivica Zubac ready to play if Timofey Mozgov’s injury lingers?

Quote:
Zubac’s high-level of production has many Lakers fans just as high on him moving forward, but could he really step in right now if Timofey Mozgov’s injuries pile up?

Maybe a future Zubac vs. Jokic vs. KAT arms race in the West (though the latter 2 have the head start).

Jokic is benefiting from a lack of good defensive analytic stats.
He is an inanimate object on defense. A broken ladder is a better defender than Jokic.
Even if I wasn't a Lakers fan, I'd prefer Zubac to Jokic.
From the article:
Quote:
The key for Jokic’s growth is the other side of the ball. He’s ready to be an elite NBA player on offense, but he still has a lot of work to do on defense, and that’s where big men really elevate their teams.

I prefer zubac as well but I'm not going to take anything away from jokic. He's got the complete package on offense. Post game, dirk fade away, passing, and a spot up 3. Dirk was no beast on defense and had a pretty nice career. he just needs to find his Tyson chandler. No big deal IMO no player is perfect.
