Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Working With Ivica Zubac On His Skyhook

Former Lakers’ center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar practiced with Zu this week and it is already paying dividends

Quote:
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2016 NBA Summer League was none other than GOAT, Ivica Zubac. Taken 32nd overall by the Lakers in the 2016 NBA Draft, expectations were relatively low from the start.

However, since then Zubac, aka Zu-Blocka, has caught the attention of General Manager Mitch Kupchak and has even drawn comparisons to fellow European center, Marc Gasol.

You should just play your best players, and if Zubac is showing he's the better player in practice, then they should play him over Moz. It's really not an embarrassment or egg in the face if you think about it. What is Mitch going to do? Apologize for being a stud at drafting and striking gold at 32?

It's not that big a problem having Moz & Zu
if Zu gets to the point where he's better than Moz, there's always a market for big men and Moz could be traded pretty easily

Mozgov would have to return to form for there to be a market for him with his contract. If he does, I agree it will probably be a good market for him next summer when there isn't free agent centers available.

Mozgov has zero market value with that contract. I am still puzzled at what the Lakers were thinking getting him at 64 million guaranteed.

Lakers Rookie Ivica Zubac Plans To Make The Skyhook His Signature Shot

Quote:
Rookie Ivica Zubac is already a fan favorite amongst the Los Angeles Lakers faithful. The Croatian center has shown a versatile skill set on the court and a very likable personality off of it. Zubac may have a bright future in Los Angeles, and although he may not play much in his first season, the rookie plans to make an impact using Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s skyhook.

Unlike centers before him, Zubac has become determined to master the shot the Lakers legend made famous. Zubac recently spoke with Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report about why players in the past never used the skyhook:

“You need to have a feel for that shot. It’s not an easy shot,” Zubac said. “If you don’t have a feel, even if you work out a year on that shot, you’re not going to master it. I think I have that feel, and I’m going to keep working on it.”

Luke keeps tinkering with the starting back court to fix the starters' slow starts, but I think it's becoming clear that the real issue is the spacing problems caused by starting Randle. If it continues in the first 10 or so regular season games, I really hope he doesn't keep forcing it with him. It's like putting a square peg in a round hole, until he gets even a semi-consistent jumpshot, which I hope he can do over the course of this next year.

Still, nice to see Zubac get the start and some meaningful PT finally!

Kind of curious Deng isn't starting/playing again....that knee bang must be a little more severe than initially reported

I CANT wait to see zubac tonight.

I'm not too crazy about him developing his skyhook because the hook he was using during the summer league seemed super effective but other than that I'm excited about he kid.

Let's go

No, the starters have slow starts because they aren't nearly as good as other team's starters.

Zubac showed some signs in the preseason. It seems he won't get much PT this year. I think Yi makes the club and Zubac probably spends most of his time in the D-League unless injury strikes.

Hopefully they get him consistent minutes the last couple of months. That would be a good time for Deng and Mosgov to average around 15 mpg each.

He had a tough !atchup against a wily vet in Chandler, and I wish the coaches had brought him in for some minutes against Len to gain experience and confidence. I think Zu deserves to be thrown against the wolves to start the season, because I think he'd adapt and respond quickly, but it looks like the coaches will be conservative with him.

Los Angeles’ young second round pick talks about his goals, his thoughts on playing in the D-League, and playing FIFA with Larry Nance Jr.

The weight room will do him a lot of good the next couple months. Excited to see what he looks like in March in comparison to now.

Zubac just needs to let the game slow down for him but actually find the awareness. His biggest problem is just experience and awareness, he is still getting his feet wet and it shows when he's on the court.

Zubac is expected to be a big part of the Lakers’ future and he needs playing time to develop his skills. It is for that reason that Zubac expects to spend some time in the D-League this season

I don't expect to see him but it's hurting the team when the small lineup is getting in the habit of being dominated by opposing bigs while Mozgov sits on the bench. Also, there's no attempt at developing a reliable inside game outside of Julius. One day they'll realize Zubac has more value than at first thought.
