Agree with the OP. For me, there is only one circumstance in which a team should tank and that is when they need to accumulate assets and dont have trade pieces to do so.

Otherwise, you never tank. Wins are irrelevant.

Yup. We have gathered great assets.

We can decide to grow the assets.

We can decide to trade the assets.

We can do both.

No need to tank anymore.

The tank died weeks before today. You should have made this thread the moment Byron was fired. If he was around, doesn't matter who we drafted, we were going to fire her up again.

Realistically it depends on what we accomplish in free agency. Unfortunately, a star player is not going to want to waste their prime years to be part of our rebuild. They want to go to teams built to win now, i.e. Durant saying his decision will be based on basketball reasons. We will be competing in free agency with championship squads who also have cap space. It should be no-brained decisions for which team these free agents should choose. A star player will only come here if they can team up with another star player of their choice.

The west is stacked and we are still young and raw. If worthy free agents do not come, which is likely the case, then it is too early to declare the tank is dead. All the teams who made it to the playoffs in the west this past season had one or more proven star players on their squad. We still do not have that yet and their is no gaurantee we will land one. Enjoy the process and let the young guys prove themselves and develop into stars. That's when the star free agents are more likely to come.

I see the young guys competing next season under Luke, but the tank may still be inevitable. We have improved but so has everyone else.

I doubt it. We tanked for 3 seasons to GATHER assets.

Now we have them. If the season is going badly south, we can now even trade for upgrades.

We simply didn't have these options, and with a declining Kobe, there was simply no reason to do so.

Again, the checklist:

#2 pick: Check. Ingram.
Byron: Fired. Luke in.
Preserve cap space: Check. 64m or so in cap space.

Even without any major additions via free agency, I expect this team to double its win total from last season. I think Luke is going to make that much of a difference in terms of establishing a system/culture that our young guys will thrive in. What you have to realize is that every single one of our young guys was noticeably held back by Byron's "coaching". I expect every one of our young guys to look much better on Luke next season.

Yeah.

The day Byron was fired the team automatically gained 10-15 wins just for that.

I was one of the few to give him a pass in his first year here because the team was the most banged up in history. But Byron had no excuse this year and exposed his terrible coaching and personality with the young kids.

Bye.

Yup. Already a much more positive culture and atmosphere. I don't see the Lakers clamoring for more youth either. They have a veritable college team at this point.

Nah it's dead.

You may be conflating tanking with sucking.

even if we get a decent Center then the season is a success. I doubt we will get a Star like KD. I want Whiteside badly

At worst.

I would love to make the playoffs, but we may fall a bit short on that mark. But I expect a lot of improvement and buzz again (in the good sense).

It's a $30 million roster as currently constructed.

I think there might be a bit of wiggle room in there somewhere to add a bit to it.

Tank won't be dead until we see what happens in free agency. If Mitch and Jim botch it again the tank will still most likely be alive

Nope. That's why they fired Byron and hired Luke. They're not tanking anymore.

They may not be a playoff team but that's not tanking.

We aren't tanking...we are going to be world beaters just yet barring some FA baby Jesus miracle, but we are going to compete, we'll have losses, a lot of losses but I fully expect us to be improved floor for me is last years T wolves team, barring some decent FA upgrades

We need to add two veterans in the starting lineup, preferably a center and shooting guard.

Early off season has been a success. Now let's get some free agents to come aboard.

That's right. This checklist really puts things in perspective when media was all about the "Lakers are a garbage fire" narrative.
