This whole Luol Deng experience makes me regret making fun of Knicks fans when they were left with the corpse of Amare Stoudemire on year 2 of his 5 year contract

Knicks are not much better today with Noah over there. Actually we can find a dozen of these bad contracts in their recent history.

We can laugh at NY and the Stat contact all we want.
Because Loul is far from a max contract. He's barely taking 17% of the cap.
Stat took 28% of the cap.

Eh even when STAT wasn't playing like he used to, at least he was still a decent player massively overpaid lol.

We had the opportunity to get a legit two way star in PG and passed. Now that he is in a better place, that whole opportunity has potentially passed. Ingram might be PG in 4 years or so, or he might not be. All that says is that we are not interested in winning now.

That statement is wholly untrue. Magic & Rob came on board now, but would not be interested in winning now if they could balance the win now, but setup for what's coming in 2018 as well?

Perhaps it says that we weren't willing to pay that particular price to win now because it wouldn't have guaranteed we'd win now. It would have guaranteed, however, that we would given up two of the three No.2 picks we've had recently.

I'd (probably Rob & Magic as well) like to see what this one can do now, and in the future. It's a balance, and it ain't easy to thread.

We see star FAs choosing to team with other stars. We could have had a star to attract others in PG. instead we have no one. If the idea is to grow organically then I have no problem with that. But that can’t be construed as trying to win now.

The key word for me is balance. The retaining of an intriguing talent (BI) while combining him with a great point guard in Ball, while obtaining a nice ending contract talent in Lopez, and the expected maturation of Randle, Nance and a few others, and a little luck with the acquisition of KCP.

All of this while being nimble for 2018 makes me take a patient approach. PG would have been nice no doubt. I won't discount that fact.

Hopefully. He plays within the offense unlike some of the younger players who like to ISO.

One of the few positives tonight. Hopefully he plays like this all year to provide us with shooting (I much rather see tonight's Deng than Brewer)

Those two are a pretty good pair to work in around Lonzo.

Very happy for his game, despite limited minutes. Agree with Omar, Deng and Kuzma can be a great F duo.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed and appreciated Deng looking like the player we thought we'd have last year. I'm not sure we'll have minutes for him all the forwards we have on the team, though.

No doubt, better than anything we saw last season. That was closer to vintage Luol than the guy from last season.

If he keeps this up maybe he'll gather interest from other teams. I doubt it though. That contract is ridiculous.

It is, but he did look like Deng tonight at least. I mean we are paying the money, why not enjoy the goods for now.

He said he worked on his shooting stroke in the offeason and I was glad to see him hit those 3s!

I feel a of a lot more comfortable with Deng shooting 3s than BI, Randle or Nance.

Glad to see him hit the 3s, there were a few I think he passed up that he should have taken. Instead, ball got stuck with him deciding whether to drive or pass. Hoping the made 3s builds up his confidence to shoot more of them, assuming they're good looks.

Deng officially out of the rotation:

Quote:
DISAPPEARING DENG

The 13 minutes Deng played as a substitute starter on opening night may have been the last Lakers fans will see of the veteran forward. Deng was back on the inactive list Sunday for the second straight game, and Walton indicated that will be the norm.

“As of now he’s not in the rotation as far as consistently penciled in without something happening,” Walton said.

On Thursday against the Clippers, the “something happening” was the suspension of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Walton started Deng at small forward to keep his second unit intact, but by the next night had replaced him with Brewer.

It’s not much of a surprise that Deng will have a limited role. The Lakers have gotten younger and playing Deng would require taking minutes from Brandon Ingram, Larry Nance Jr., Julius Randle and Kyle Kuzma. However, Deng is just a year removed from signing a $72 million contract that will keep him with the Lakers through 2020, making his situation all the more awkward.

“We’ve talked,” Walton said. “It’s 82 games. There’s a lot that’s going to change, but for right now we’ve asked him to stay sharp, to keep working to stay ready for when he gets called on and continue mentoring our young players.”
