Something personal must be going on here. There's literally no logical explanation for not playing him 10-12mpg at the "SF" spot (though that's not his ideal position).

You just explained the reason. Too slow and can't shoot.

I see a lot of assumptions. I can guess too. Magic still wants to freeze him out to the point of a buyout. Not going to happen, that's WAY too much money for Deng to walk away from. Also, based on one brief look at Deng in his sweats in SA, I'm going to guess that he's in decent workout shape but not basketball shape. Hard to get in basketball shape when you're not on the floor competing.

Stretching is a dirty solution in terms of long term salary cap management. Particularly considering he becomes an expiring contract the following summer, allowing us more of an opening to keep Randle and get that second max. I'm guessing this is big factor in Magic now hedging on the 2Max proclamation.

So we’re parading 10-day guys instead of playing him?

I feel bad for Deng, but I think I understand how/why the FO insists on the coaches not playing him.

One way, or another, Luol is gone. If the Lakers can find a taker, without giving up anything of real value, that would be the preferred option (doubtful). More than likely, Deng gets bought out.

If the Lakers play Deng, and he performs poorly, people will complain about incompetent FO/coaching decisions, and the likely-hood of trading him goes form "doubtful" to "nonexistent".

If he performs well, then the odds of trading him may increase, but if he gets injured.... Plus, you don't want your team to get used to a players presence, on the court, unless you plan to keep that player.

All that said, I hope the Lakers and Deng can find an amicable solution moving forward, that allows the Lakers to clear some (if not all) his money off the books, and Deng gets to go to a winning team, where he can contribute.

His trade value has nowhere to go but up. Not playing him guarantees it won’t.

Yeah, not sure why they're doing this.

Deng had value. We would have been able to trade him if Magic and the FO didn’t play this dumb game where they outcasted him.

Deng should be playing over some players on our team this season and just because he got a big contract from the previous FO is not his fault.

New management wanted everyone to know just how bad the last ones did and were willing to kill dengs value in the process.

There are plenty of playoff teams that Deng could help out

Yeah I dont get it. Williams isnt even NBA quality. Wear is good 1 out of 4 games. Ennis should be banned from the NBA.

Deng deserves some minutes.... and Deng was complete ass too when he played.

When?

Deng's trade value was negative the second he signed that contract. He's never "had value" since he's been on the team.

Opening night starter

I would totally understanding giving as many of his minutes as possible to players of the future, but when they're signing guys out of China because their future players aren't healthy, it's a little weird.

This is seemingly only being done to emphasize that he was a terrible signing. If he does anything on the court that indicates he could have been helpful, it would still be a bad signing so I don't know what they are protecting.

Perhaps if the play Deng and he does good...

The new Lakers management would have to concede it wasn't such a bad signing, whereas by never playing him, it is easier to continue blaming Mitch and Jimbo...

I would give Deng the backup 4 minutes. Best case scenario is that he plays well and the FO has to admit he had more left in the tank.

Worst that could happen is he'd play worse than Wear and it'd lower his value.

But I think Deng has more to offer the game/Lakers than Brewer did.

When we watched Wear on the defensive end against Golden State, I get the feeling that Deng would have played much better defense, and backup 4 spot IS open right now.. I'd give that to Deng tbh over Williams or Wear.

That's just counter productive backwards thinking only to spite the previous regime.

Hmmm... maybe Jeanie's idea?

(Joking...kinda)

This could be the case, if he could play well there would be no good reason not to play him. He's not taking a buyout. Maybe the game has passed him by and he's given up.

I thought he had something left but it seems maybe he doesn't, its the only thing that makes sense.

How can his trade value go down? Anyone trading for him is assuming he can't play at all right now.

There's a chance we play him against Miami and he looks worse than Wear and Williams

or there's a chance he scores 10 points and plays better defense than Wear or Williams.

Even if what really happened was in the middle of those two things, I think he's a better 4 than Wear or Williams right now, and we should be playing him at the backup 4 right now.

Not playing will not help anything and I am still perplexed why with so many injuries, he’s still not playing. Worse case scenario is if he’s done , we can just stretched him. And I agree Deng should have gotten Brewer minutes.

For whatever reason, it looks like we will never see Deng on the court again. I'd assume Luke suits up at SF/PF b/f Deng touches the court. So strange.

There is no way that Deng has more to offer than Travis Wear right now, he's an undersized 4 that has more rust than the Titanic on him. He is also overweight and probably close to 40 years old.

Absolutely nothing to gain from playing Deng right now, all it would do is create a circus/storyline in the media about how the Lakers gave out one of the all-time worst sports contracts. All it would take is one clip of Deng going viral.

I think we should stop viewing Deng as a player, but as a contract/commitment. That is all he is at this stage.
