Calderon can add value to LA this season, helping the young guys learn to execute and providing great 3pt shooting. But we do also have a glut at guard and are more of a developmental team while Calderon is deep into the back nine.
There are a number of spots around the league where a capable vet backup at PG could have value. Sacramento has Collison and Temple at PG. Dallas has Deron, Harris and Curry, the first two of which are injury prone (Jose played well for Carlise and with Dirk a couple years ago). Houston has Harden and Beverly at PG. There's space there. Memphis only has Conley who is coming off of injury. I could see Orlando having interest in Meeks plus a pick for Calderon. Atlanta has Schroder and Jarett Jack coming off an Achillies tear at PG. Brooklyn could use him, though what type of assets you could get are debatable. I might send him there just to help them improve (for obvious reasons). There's also the random injury need that pops up each year.
Timing was key for LA to land assets to take Jose into space. The market shifts when free agency settles and roster tinkering starts being done in trade. Probably not looking at a significant asset but I could see LA netting something for Calderon. If we don't find a taker I expect LA to waive him so he can join Pau in San Antonio. Unfortunately they don't have the salary to match in trade. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Calderon, Spain Complete Exhibition Slate
Quote: | After back-to-back silver medals, Jose Calderon and his fellow Spaniards have their sights locked on gold after completing their slate of pre-Olympics matches.
Spain, the No. 2 team in the world ranked by FIBA, went 4-2 in its exhibition tour, with Calderon mainly coming off the bench.
The new Laker had his best performance in his only start, tallying six points and a game-high six assists in an 85-61 victory over 15th-ranked Angola in Burgos on July 12. |

I've always liked Calderon. In a reserve role he's a tremendous upgrade over Huertas. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Agreed. My problem with his is not really with him.. it's the fact that all 5 of our guards (D'LO, JC, Lou, Calderon, and Marcelo) don't/can't play a lick of D.
That will become a big issue for us this season and while Calderon is a good solid vet who fits well offensively, he's also not bringing anything to the table outside of experience and some shooting.
Marcelo seems like the totally redundant piece, I guess. |

Calderon is a money shooter. It was cringe worthy to see Huertas pass up open shot after open shot, and even more cringe worthy was seeing him take those same shots. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

And even more cringe-worthy is his defense or lack thereof. |

Jose Calderon Joins Former Laker Pau Gasol In Rio For Olympics
Quote: | The Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio are set to commence with the opening ceremony on Friday night. Basketball begins on Saturday morning and the Los Angeles Lakers are represented in the form of newly acquired point guard, Jose Calderon, and former Laker Pau Gasol, who are both representing their home country of Spain. |

Rio 2016 Olympics: Men’s basketball tournament wide open, says Spain’s Jose Calderon
Spain is in Group B and will play its opening game against Croatia on Sunday evening, followed by contests against Brazil on Tuesday.
Quote: | Spain is in Group B and will play its opening game against Croatia on Sunday evening, followed by contests against Brazil on Tuesday, Nigeria on Thursday, Lithuania on August 13 and Argentina on August 15, reports Tass.
“I think Croatia is a more important game than people may think. They’ve come from playing an Olympic qualifying tournament and they may be coming in with a little more rhythm than other teams,” the 34-year-old Calderon, a native of the southwestern province of Badajoz, said. |

The lack of a plus defender in our back court is a concern to say the least. However, especially with the young guns I think that part of this can be blamed on Byron's lack of a defensive system. Byron's teams have been bad a D for a long long time.
It will be up to Luke to implement a system to help our guys D it up. Honestly DLO was a better defender than I thought he would be last year. Luke will help him become better. JC has the tools to be a plus defender. I am hoping Luke and his system will let him live up to his potential on that end.
Calderon is not a good defender physically, but he may help our D by playing competent offense. Good offensive efficiency can help the defense quite a bit. That my hope at least. _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss |

CALDERON TAKES BACK SEAT AS SPAIN FALLS TO 0-2
Quote: | Spain’s starting point guard for the last two Olympics (though he missed the last two games in 2008 with an injury), Jose Calderon, has spent almost all of the first two games here on the bench. Calderon was a DNP against Croatia and played less than two minutes against Brazil.
Calderon, now 34 years old, playing behind Ricky Rubio, Sergio Rodriguez and Sergio Llull is a clear indication that the national team is in a period of transition. Calderon’s generation, which includes Pau Gasol (36), Juan Carlos Navarro (36) and Felipe Reyes (36), is on its way out.
And with the younger talent that Spain has in the backcourt, Calderon is the first to really take a back seat. He spoke with NBA.com about that topic after Tuesday’s loss. |

Jose Calderon injured? NBA veteran receiving DNP-CD treatment in Rio Olympics
Quote: | In their game against Croatia, Jose Calderon received a DNP-CD (did not play – coach decision). Also, he only played limited minutes in their loss to the host nation, Brazil. There are speculations that Calderon might be suffering injury or feeling something ‘uncomfortable’ in his body.
However, Jose Calderon denied the rumors and remained a team player despite having limited playing time. |

I hope Jose Calderon is saving his energy for the Lakers training camp because he has hardly seen the floor in the Olympic tournament.
He has struggled and is averaging only 3.5 minutes per game and has several DNP-CD.
Good thing he has an expiring contract! |

Too bad he couldn't stop by the Drew league. He'd probably put up 30. |

Argentina, Spain aging but not done yet in men's basketball
Quote: | "Kind of like the same situation for them," Spain's Jose Calderon said. "You're always saying, 'Oh that's it, this is the last tournament' and they play again. They play again, and they keep playing. And like I say, I think until you don't see us out there anymore, you've just got to play with everything you've got." |

Calderon played 7 minutes today against Brazil (most of the tournament) and scored 6 points.

It's because Spain has Rubio and Rodriguez as the main guards for the Spanish team, I have no idea why Calderon wanted to be on the team knowing that he was gonna have no playing time with 2 PGs in front of him perhaps he just wants to represent his country. |

Watched the game, didn't come in until Navarro got ejected for flopping. Came in and provided decent shooting for Spain, and the unit with him, Rodrigez, Fernandez, Mirotic, and Gasol was able to hold off the Argentinan rally |

José Calderón will emerge as L.A.'s backup point guard
Quote: | Calderón and Huertas both are offense-first guards who will get burned on defense. Calderón’s strength is his shooting, although he is incredibly the all-time leader in assists for the Toronto Raptors, while Huertas is better known for his passing. Their playing time could be determined by which skill Walton determines is more valuable for his reserve unit. |

There isn't really any huge difference between Calderon and Huertas when it comes to passing and defense. What gives Calderon the edge over Huertas is that Calderon isn't allergic to shooting. Huertas can move the ball well but he only shoots as an absolute last resort, which is way too easy to defend. With a guy like him all you have to do is give him enough space and force him to shoot because you know he doesn't want to, especially on threes. Calderon is the one who can keep the defense honest from the outside. _________________ “Christ did not die to forgive sinners who go on treasuring anything above seeing and savoring God.
