In what sense do you believe that the deals are unique? Lots of teams have exclusive deals, such as the Yankees.

yes, thats what I meant. Exclusive deals. That block out large sections of fans who aren't subscribed to a particular broadcaster.

How common are they?

Yankees are on YES network which I believe is on all major cable providers. Dodger games still aren't on DirecTV, correct?

Yup. Just charter as it stands now for the next 20+ years.

So for the Yanks, is it common for anyone with cable tv to catch home & away games?

I've often wondered? Does it make sense to ink a 20 deal with a team? If the team doesn't perform I think viewers would decrease. In that the case wouldn't the number of subscribers decrease too?

The deal is somewhat unique in that Spectrum is a media distributor who would normally pay subscriber fees to a media provider like Fox, who licensed broadcast rights from teams. Spectrum bypassed the middle man and bought the broadcast rights themselves and setup their own sports channel becoming both a distributor and a provider.

In Houston, it’s Root Sports for the Astros, Rockets, and Dynamo. It started off as something else, but it turned out to be quite a fiasco. Some cable providers still don’t carry it. The original company ended up in bankruptcy.

I think you need a market the size of LA or NYC to make something like that viable. It’s just going to get more complicated with cord cutters.

Edit: Root Sports is now AT&T SportsNet.
