If that person defending him was Matt Barnes then I might be a little bit impressed.

My memory of Derek is that he was great when he was a starter, but no good coming off the bench. Had to start to have confidence in his ability to play.

And he's too old to start.

He'd probably be a great locker room guy, but that's it.

Man, I'll always love D-Fish. Hard nosed defender from the jump. Couldn't hit a layup or trey to save his life. However, one extended injury later, and he returned with that beautiful three-ball added to his arsenal. Remained very iffy with his layups, but he seemed to make them when they counted.

That said, he had his time. Gotta let the young Lakers develop their identity without frequent callbacks to the Kobe era.

Did you watch his clutch 3 during playoffs? While I agree that he isnt a good rim finisher but dude was money shooting 3s during the playoffs runs.

I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in D-Fish as an assistant, but as a player, there's not much more he could offer.

You have to read the next sentence, but I'll admit my wording could've been better. Much better.

I meant when he first came into the league. Tenacious D was all he had to hang his hat on. Then came the injury that sidelined him for much of one season. Couldn't remember exact details so I did some research. Stress fracture in his right foot caused Fisher to miss the first 62 games of the 2000–01 season.

And when he came back he had developed that reliable trey we know him for. I forgot that he shot 51% from behind the arc through those epic Western Conference sweeps.

Hopefully Fisher's discovery of his shot means there's hope for our young Lakers, even one Anthony Brown.

The beginning of the end for Fisher as a reliable player was when Farmar went down with the meniscus tear and Phil played the heck out of Fish for that stretch. He was gassed and never the same after that. He showed flashes here and there, but he was bad more times than he was good after that. It's like running backs in football. After a certain amount of carries, it's pretty much downhill in terms of production. That was Fish after the Farmar injury.

Fish would be a nice pick-up as an assistant coach but his playing days are long gone. Unless he's getting ready for next summer's Drew League.

I don't think he is trust worth as an assistant coach and his playing days are long gone. He should take over as head coach at Arkansas.

If Fisher becomes assistant coach, what if he steals Kendall away from JC?

IIRC Fisher owes his ex-wife something like $120k in spousal support a month.

Hmm.

I love Fish - he gets a permanent lifetime pass as far as I'm concerned. He's Laker family and should be welcomed back in any reasonable capacity.

However, I don't think that role should be as a player.

I also feel pretty bad for him. He always struck me as somebody who, among his many strong traits, was self-aware. It seems to me that he's let his ego obscure his self-awareness. He needs to know that his playing career is done, and that it's ok to get on with the next phase of his life. Whether it's inside or outside basketball. He has a great chance at success whatever his (non-playing) path in life is.
