Luke Walton went to Rams training camp to learn from Jeff Fisher

Luke Walton has the highest profile coaching job in Los Angeles. Jeff Fisher is suddenly right behind him.

New Lakers’ coach Walton went to Rams practice this week to watch new-to-Los Angeles coach Jeff Fisher and how he runs a practice. Walton said he just came looking to learn in an interview with the Rams’ official site.

““I came down with an open mind. I know it’s obviously different sports, but coaching to me is coaching. It’s how you relate to the players and different strategies.””

Fisher has coached in the NFL since Forest Gump was in movie theaters. Or as long as Dakota Fanning has been alive. When he took his first NFL coaching job, everyone was using Netscape Navigator to get around the Web. Let’s just say Fisher has been at this a while, he’s learned a lot of lessons, some of which he might be able to pass along to a young hoops coach.

Walton isn’t the first NBA coach to see what they can crib from a football coach — Erik Spoelstra went to watch Chip Kelly’s practices at Oregon, for example. In terms of structure, in terms of relating to players, there certainly are things that can be learned.

What Walton really could use is Brandon Ingram to turn out to be as good as Todd Gurley.

First evidence of poor judgement by Luke all offseason.

Yeah Jeff Fisher is not someone who can give good coaching advice but who else locally would qualify?

Well you never want to stop learning. No coach has all the answers, except maybe Popovich, but that comes from decades of experience, which is something Jeff has over most NFL coaches.

I'm sure this is based on locale, however. Luke just happens to be in LA, so it's convenient for him to watch the Rams.

Uh huh. I'm sure that's why he went down there.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you meant Byron. That's a pretty bad typo, bro

On the contrary, I find this to be a very cool move. Shows he's open to learning new things, won't rule out unorthodox methods, and always seeking new knowledge from different sources, sets his pride aside, always trying to improve..I'm happy to hear news like this. I can't picture Byron doing something like this.

With this information in tow, I now fully expect Calderon to be starting at point guard, our team to become full of dirty players, and to have a solid defense with no modern offense whatsoever.

Oh, and somehow, the Lakers will be the only team in the NBA to finish 7-9.

As far as relating to players, dealing with the rigors of life in pro sports and the politics of the game, I think Fisher is great.

Now, if we're talking scheme, in-game adjustments and overall game management,,,ehh, notsomuch.

Players and NFL personnel love good ol boys like Fish. Dude plays the game and takes care of his people.

SMH, yea Fisher is a well of knowledge. Now if he wants to learn new strength and conditioning methods, he should go talk to Canseco. BRILLIANT!

Not sure why some are against the move.
Sometimes you learn what to do, and sometimes you learn what NOT to do.
You just keep learning.

regardless of which coach he went to see. it shows that Luke has the desire to learn, to improve, think outside the box and that he truly cares about doing his job, and doing it well. really a great sign.

I agree. Can't be mad at a coach who constantly wants to learn and doesn't think he knows everything.

Luke should be watching the Olympics instead. International teams really do a much better job of setting screens than American teams do.

Well you can always learn from bad coaches. Just do the opposite.

Not really. An observant person can learn something from any and every coach they watch. Try coaching once and you will learn that is the truth.
