I know it's a crazy hypothetical. But it's the offseason. I'm bored.
With our roster going into next season, we obviously wouldn't beat the USA team. But do you guys think we could get silver? Could we beat Australia? Spain? Brazil (Huertas v. Huertas)? France?
Here are NBA players from each team's roster.
Argentina
Ginobli
Scola
Nocioni
Australia
Bogut
Delladova
P. Mills
Joe Ingles
Aaron Baynes
Brazil
Huertas
Neto
Nene
Barbosa
China
Yi Jianlin
Croatia
Saric
Hezonja
Bogdanovic
France
Parker
Batum
Diaw
Gobert
Lauvergne
Lithuania
Valuncuinas
Sabonis
Nigeria
Aminu
Diogu
Serbia
Bogdanovic
Jokic
Raduljica
Spain
Rubio
Calderon
Mirotic
P. Gasol
Ibaka
R. Fernandez
S. Rodriguez
Venezuela

Since Huertas & Calderon can't be on both teams at once, the universe implodes when we face Brazil or Spain.

I would guess Spain, France and probably Australia would/could beat us. But I really don't follow those teams much. |

We'll get platinum medal if there was such a thing. That's not to say the Lakers are good but the Olympic competition is pathetic. I mean I'm not so sure how those guys are so proud of winning a gold medal when the games are like shooting practice. _________________ LeGoat! LeMazing! LeGend! |

We likely don't medal. Other countries would be more experienced and accustomed to playing under FIBA rules.
And that's assuming we get to keep international players like Deng, Mozgov and Clarkson (he plays for the Philippines). |

Chemistry can trump talent in the Olympics, just ask the 2004 "Dream" team. So yeah, a 17 win NBA club would get destroyed. |

We should have stopped sending professionals after 92'. We made our point. But we kept sending and sending, and each team was less dominant until the debacle in 2004. They should have just stopped after 92. We made our point and the idea that we are invincible if we send our pros would have lived on forever. But now, any team we send, other countries feel there is a chance. Our dominance and reputation tarnished by 2004. |

Thats because we take getting the gold for granted and the best players in the game don't show up on the world stage unless something disastrous happens like losing in the Olympics. The alternative is to send players from college but those guys would get crushed playing against the pros. U-23 team probably wouldn't work either but the games would be a lot more competitive against pros. The problem is that the USA is just levels beyond the rest of the world in basketball so it does get boring when they beat some team from Africa or Asia by 50. |

It's not that serious, really. It's just sports, not the Cold War, and not a hot war. Who cares how dominant the team looks? And who cares if they sometimes lose? That's what makes sports so interesting - anything can happen. |

I think a number of NBA teams would have embarrassing losses. I actually think the Lakers would not be that bad, they would beat the bottom feeders (teams with the least NBA players) and be competitive with a majority of the others. They might get manhandled by one or two of the top teams. |

We'd be fighting for the last place. As is our custom these last years.
BTW, after the embarrassing game against Lithuania, Huertas is having himself a very good tournament. _________________ .

Current Lakers would still be the best team on paper-- would come down to experience and if they had the focus/physicality to compete at a high enough level to get gold. Deng, Mozgov, Calderon, Huertes are all guys that would or have played for their national teams. Russell and Ingram will no doubt be on team USA one day. Randle has a chance. Clarkson has the talent. Nance could be one of those bench role players.
Any NBA team, sans Philly and the Nets, should be able to compete for a medal. It's a different type of game and focus but they would easily hold their own. |
