Dude looks much stronger upper-body wise than when he came into the league. I was at the NBA draft the year he was drafted, and actually shook his hand. Dude was a twig. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals
After four years of playing in China, Yi Jianlian is back in the United States, specifically in El Segundo at the Lakers' practice facility.
Surrounded by a horde of English- and Chinese-speaking reporters on Friday, the 2007 sixth-overall draft pick worked on his shot before discussing his return to the NBA.
Yi averaged 7.9 points and 4.9 rebounds during his five seasons in the NBA. While overseas, the defensively lacking Chinese League bolstered his pedestrian numbers, as he put up more than 23 points per night in each of his last four seasons with the Guangdong Southern Tigers.
The Heshan native also represented his country at the Olympics, where he averaged the third-most points (20.4) despite China dropping all five of its games. In Rio, he showed off an improved outside shot, which makes him an intriguing addition for Luke Walton's new, Golden State-inspired offense.
“In the summertime I had been talking to Coach Luke,” Yi said. “He and I talked a lot about the system. I think I can really fit on the team and in the system.”
About a month after the first rumors surfaced that the Los Angeles Lakers signed Yi Jianlian to a complicated, highly incentive-based contract, the Chinese big man finally met with the media for the first time. It was a big moment for him.
“I feel excited, especially to play for a city and a team with a name all over the world,” Jianlian told Serena Winters of Lakers Nation after working out in front of the media. Jianlian could be seen on social media draining threes during the public session, something he’ll need to do to stretch the floor in his minutes for the Lakers.
Lakers' Yi Jianlian feels stronger, more confident in NBA return
Quote:
hers might have, but Yi Jianlian never doubted he’d get a second act in the NBA.
Friday morning, the 6-foot-11, 243-pound forward/center began it, standing on the Lakers practice court amid a crowd of a few dozen reporters from English- and Chinese-language outlets. He expressed the confidence he has in himself. It’s a confidence that crystallized during his four years away from the NBA.
“Always expected it,” Yi said, about his NBA return. “[Was] always getting ready.”
There are going to be a few disappointed players this season. Just about everyone has a 'shot' to play but there are only so many minutes.
Health permitting, no way we end up keeping all 4-5 centers. I think Black or Yi will be traded by season's end. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals
For Black, with Moz/Zub around, I can see him being open to a trade. At 6m/ a year ,a great trade asset too. Could be mutual. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

That or I could see Luke doing what Kerr did; pending on the matchup, Black/Yi/Zubac will get minutes off the bench, just like what Kerr did with Ezeli/Varejao/Speights last year coming off the bench for Bogut

By the trade deadline, assuming we're out of playoff reach, I can see Black, Calderon, Yi, being nice trade chips. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals
Black's 6m deal needs to be off the books next season for the team to have a max deal open in 2017. Why not trade him to a contender and get an asset in return. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

The Yi interviews/workouts from his media session today are up on Lakernation:
The release on his shot is actually quicker. I think that's what the coaching staff is emphasizing, which is why it looks more fluid than what we saw in his stint in China.
Looking really good so far. Can't wait to see him play.

The FO has quietly collected potential steals in Yi and Calderon..
