The Yi interviews/workouts from his media session today are up on Lakernation:
The release on his shot is actually quicker. I think that's what the coaching staff is emphasizing, which is why it looks more fluid than what we saw in his stint in China.
Looking really good so far. Can't wait to see him play.
I saw him shoot exactly one shot, lol, but I drew the same conclusion as you. His shot looked a bit quicker than what we saw in GT's breakdown of his game.
That makes me a bit more optimistic that he'll be able to function as a "real" stretch 5 (in the vein of Horford --- not a great 3 point shooter but good enough to keep defenses honest).
I think Yi can help the Lakers and play maybe even center. I think he can maybe start at power forward too. Do you think he can win the job?
I would be surprised if Yi was a starter to begin the season. That being said it is possible he could win the job. Yi has all the talent and skills to be a very good player it just need to translate to real games consistently.

He said he's been working out at the facility for two weeks. Probably put in some time with Theo, Jud or someone for the shooting. They could have pointed something in his form, causing him to change it.
If the above turns out to be true, I'm sold on the coaching staff already.

After one whole summer with these coaches, Randle's gonna come back shooting like Dirk
Yi Jianlian will return to the NBA this season for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign, and while his one-year contract with the Lakers is mostly non-guaranteed and packed with incentives, the fact that it can be worth up to $8MM suggests the team believes the Chinese forward can be productive. For his part, Yi says he’s not worried about re-adjusting to the NBA after spending the last several seasons in China.
The next yao? Seriously? These idiot reporters sounding more like TMZ camera crew
One of them asked Yi about the Chinese government 'tax'-ing his salary...
And Yi gave him a very comical stare for asking it.
Someone tell that reporter this is not Mao's Communist China anymore , I think their tax rate is comparable to that of the US, heck, if Bernie Sanders became President, Yi would probably pay more in taxes than he when he was living under the Chinese Communist Party . _________________ Ringo "You retired too?"

2k17 made Yi relevant, that might be a sign that he's ready to become a different player.
If he can just play the role of a Matt Bonner, play around 10 minutes or so, hit the open jumper at a decent clip, I'll be more than happy. _________________ Ringo "You retired too?"

If he uses his length and agility to shut down P&Rs defensively, I'll be happy. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better”

Yes I'm most interested in seeing his versatility defensively. If he can be a big who at least doesn't get destroyed on pnr containment I'd be excited. Couple in his outside shot. He can be a poor man's modern day ideal center - Versatile on pnr defense, not a non factor on offense.
